Awesome! I love how you don't seem to measure much. Recent board I shaped I tried to rely more on my intuition instead of on my measurements. It came out so much better and was much more enjoyable. Seeing you do the rails without marks, dang!
Would love to see a vid on how you make that fin. Especially the part that goes into the finbox seems hard to make!
I do take a few measurements but I’m not a numbers guy. Some guys are some guys are not. I like to use my eyes and personally I think shaping to my eye is far better and easier than stopping and chasing numbers.
I’ll definitely do some fin vids in the future 🤙

Haha yeh the glassing rack is a bit average. One day I’ll get around to getting a new one. I have pulled my back once already trying to wrap the rails.

Hey love your videos. Nice to see someone helping us out that are not pros. Is your sander a DA or random orbital. Do you prefer that than the rotary sander ? Love your work.
Thanks mate. I try to use the mirka as it has dust extraction and I’ve only got my shaping bay to sand in so I need that. It’s random. The rotary is quicker and I do use it for plugs and boxes but with the mirka it leave a far better finish and is far more ergonomic for long times on the tool.. although a bit slower at stock removal.

Question on your process, with this board you planed your thickness before cutting the outline, where I think on some of your other boards you cut the outline first. Any reason for this?
I generally always skin the bottom before cutting the outline but on this I was subject to using a blank that was slightly over size. It was all I could get hold of. So before I cut the template I made sure I had the rocker and thickness/foil some where close to what I wanted. If I had a close tolerance blank I wouldn’t have had to do any of those extra steps.

I don’t have my first one. And I still regret it to this day. It was an absolute dog so I cut it up and reshaped it. I’m very different now in my confidence and overall work flow.

I think this is PU vs EPS but also.. a little more sanding
If it’s your first don’t stress too much. Just take your time before glassing and make sure it’s exactly how you want it and I’m sure it’ll be sweet 🤘
Another great video, good tunes too! I echo what others have said, you can probably do separate videos on rails, fins, fin box installs etc.
I noticed you use the plunge router for the centre fin but a laminate trimmer for the side fins? What's the reason behind that?
The futures strong box single fin has a router but that is 1/2 inch and only fits a plunge router. It needs more grunt as the bit is huge. The standard sized futures boxes are 1/4inch so trim router is the go 🤘

Awesome vid my man! Smooth and calm style. In love with that bottom contour tool, it seems to take the guess work out of it and assure you are going to get a symmetric result....I have only shaped one board so far and took the concavity a bit too far...IMO...it seems like less is more is single to double, etc...before you had that tool what was your technique for making symmetric concaves...if you don't mind me picking your brain, mate...
Keep up the fantastic shaping! If I lived in Ozzy or Hawaii I try to get a board from ya but I'm all the way on the east coast of US with constant crap waves!

Before the concave tool I’d try rough it out with the planer with a few shallow cuts. Then blend in with a curved block and 40grit moving to a med soft then to soft pad nose to tail
Great video again man. Love the colour. Did you cut the cloth around the boxes so it sat down on the board rather than up and onto the fin boxes? Another good tip!! I’ve been using your fill coat wrapping the rail tip and it’s been super helpful. Love it man! Yeww! 🤙🏼
Yeh man. Around the single fin the glass tents up on the flange heaps and can cause bubbles. The flange part gets ground away in the end anyway so I just lay the glass flush along the base section to keep it flat. I also cut the slots on the second layer as well to push the air out

super video man thanks. I am just finshed glassing my first board going to add the fins next and it scares me as i will have to drill into the board> I am going using the fin boxs that are like leash plugs so how do i know i have drilled eught?
Do you mean fcs1 plugs? They should have little tabs on them to show you how far you can sink them into the board. You want them as deep as you can get them without drilling through the other side and with out sinking them in resin 👌
@@Shrednaught yes sir they are fcs 1 plugs as the guy in the surf supplyer shop said are the easy ones to use for my first build. so i will just tape my drill bit to show how far i need to go down. thanks again for all the help.
Yup. Tape the bit. I’m pretty sure fcs have an installation video on them. Just have a google and should fine it 🤙
Hey first of all its an awsome board! What tool is it to shape the V-Bottom at the Tail an the Single-Concave at the Nose? Would be great if you can tell how you made it or where to buy!
Thanks. The tool is a concave sanding tool and you should be able to find one at most surf suppliers . Just have a look around on the internet and it won’t take you long to find. Definitely worth it 🤙

I mixed almond and a dark brown. But only a little drop of the brown 🤙

It’s the mirka dero5 and I use mirka pads 80 grit 🤙

@@Shrednaught another question mate :) is this tool good for vibration? I own a Bosch dual mode turbo sander but my main problem is that it is heavy and produces a ot of vibration resulting in hand problems :( this one seems light and perfect, is it?
This one is the best in the market for vibration. They even have an app that can connect to Bluetooth on the tool and monitor it. I highly rate this tool

any recommendations to avoid color bleeding at the cutlap? your cutlaps look so clean!
Quality tape is the biggest help. I use 3m 233+ green. Make sure the board is clean and free from dust and when you’ve laid your tape down give it a gentle push down with the back of a razor or pop stick to get it to adhere properly.

Beautiful board. Any tips on nor getting burn through or exposing weave? Didn't look like you did a final coat
There is a couple of little hints in the video. Always do you’re best with the prep before fill coats. But I find wrapping the top fill coat around the rails then sanding the laps flush before the next fill coat helps. As does a cheater coat before fill coat as well.
@@Shrednaught yeah, did notice that little trick - smart. Reckon it would work the same with epoxy, given it doesn't sand as well until fully cured?
Yeh it works with epoxy but you can also get away with flattening the Laps with epoxy with out it as epoxy is sandable straight up without filler

It can be debated that a sanded finish is slightly faster but there is opinion on that. It’s more just for how it looks out of the water.
How’s this board end up going? Thinking about building similar dims. Not sure if I wanna do a 2+1 or bonzer though
Really good from what I’ve heard. Only running as a single fin. I’d personal leave it as a 2+1. A bonzer might benefit from a different plan shape

Yew! Thanks man. You can go to blending curves website and grab some for free. The other alternative is to download an app call IShaper. It allows you to create templates and download for free on your phone.

Yewww! Super Clean mate! what grit did you use for sanding the cut lap? i always have trouble on the nose area that its not flat enough, after glassing the bottom and laminating the deck, seems more bubble will build up on the cut lap in the nose. cheers
I use 80 grit mirka pads. If standard paper is probably use 120. Yeh the nose and tail are where the glass gets all bunched up. Getting nice relief cuts and focusing on the area for a bit after the board is completely lammed can help this out.

Yeh they definitely do that. But depending on the cuts you can get more or less bunch up of glass underneath.

From memory it was 6oz bottom with the tint. Then 4oz patches

Hey - how tall are your bays? Getting the backyard shed finished in a few weeks, going to be building some dedicated bays in there.
Off the top of my head I think they’re about 8-9 ft . I could definitely do with some more head space but it’s all I had to work with

Na I never put filler in the lam. When I do my fill coat I push it around the bottom and onto the laps. Then once cure I’ll flip it and sand the laps flush.

A week. Couldn’t tell you exactly the hours as a lot of time is waiting for resin to cure.

It’s a concave sanding block. Bought it online . They can be found pretty easily at any good surfboard shaper supplier
Just watching this video again for like the 10th time as I am about to start my second board and it is a 7.6 with a squash tail. so you have a bit of a V at the nose and the tail and the convex starts about 12" from the nose and runs 2/3 of the board where you got a flat bit just before the V in the tail? Also man you have to show us how to make your convex shappeing tool that is the most asked about tool you use in all the videos. All so sorry for asking so many questions as I am trying to learn but a super big tank you for making these videos and also the way you answer every question asked. and i ripped some T shirts as I am starting to think you need a ripped T shirt to build class boards.
Ripped shirt is essential. For these style of boards I feel that keeping them simple is enough. A touch of V to help initiate rail to rail but overall just a simple bottom. It was designed to just cruise on the smallest of days so it isn’t going 6 to 12 and hitting the lip. Flat bottom works fine.
I think sometimes it’s easy to over complicate things ( not just surfboards ) 😅

It is still green. It’s not tacky to the touch but it’s not full cure. You kinda need to time it right with 6oz glass. With 4oz you can get away with leaving it to cure. 🤙

The futures fins boxes have zero can’t built into them and the cant comes built into the actual fins. So whatever fins were chosen to be used in the board would have the desired Cant 🤙

Why do you cut the corners of your squeegee?
The way they come from the supplier they have sharp 90 corners that can sometimes catch on the glass and pull it when laminating. The rounded edges I cut into them stops that.

Yeh I used both. This board actually had a little concave in the nose the help with a cheater five style. Nothing too serious though.

Yeh if it’s not a polish I’ll always chuck a sealer on. It generally improves the over all finished look.

Yeh man. It’s a concave / convex shaping block. You just screw/reverse the screw to bend the ply and that give you either concave or belly/Vee

a little single concave to basically flat to... slight vee? couldnt really tell what ya had goin on there in the tail. Anyways, thats a good formula for a nice egg. how do you feel about concave all the way through on mid lengths?
Yup you got it mate. Single in the nose to flat with some V out the tail.

Single all the way will work it just depends on the board setup and how you want it to surf. I’ve got a personal midlength that is basically just a big shortboard. Single to double to v
Shrednaught key words “if possible” haha. I have an old 6’6 pintail egg with same basic idea one of the best boards I’ve ever surfed. A lot more vee in front of the fin though, that can be key

I think this will be a board for his girlfriend to learn on as well so tbh I tried to keep things fairly simple. It’s hard when you’re trying to get best of both worlds on the one board 😅
is there a reason you don't write down the litreage with the other dimensions on the board?
Yeh, 99% of my shapes are hand shaped. There isn’t a way to tell volume as that is a computer ( CNC shaping )program that spits those numbers out. You can obviously get a pretty close guess but most of the time people get boards from me with a set of dimensions in mind and we just work with that.

Na definitely not for pin holes. That should be done with resin. This is just to make the finish better. Yeh let it dry then I hit it with a 360 polish pad or you can use 400 or scotch bright. Just to knock the sanding dust zits outta it
