Is tretinoin the same as retinol?
@@madmade6877 Yes! 🙌🏼
@@madmade6877but stronger
I’m 82 look 62 and I used Tretinoin or Retin A for thirty years
@@barbarakempf761 you look amazing! ✨
I’m 51. I’ve used Retin-A since I was 22, 29 YEARS! At first, it was for intractable acne. I haven’t had acne for 21 years, but I still use it every night. People think I’m 38-41. My skin is plump, soft, & wrinkle-free.
What's the concentration of tretinoin you use?
Hi what strength do use pls
Do you have any crows feet or anything? Even When when smiling? Do you apply around eyes?
Same!! 32. Have used since 19. Mistaken for 26-27 often. It is the best ingredient on earth!
@@trevorpygeorge4632 What strength did you start with & brand?
I absolutely think Tret is the GOAT. I’ve used it for 30 years. I’ve earned my opinion.
How many days in a week you use it?
Me too! But off and on for 10 years, and consistently for the past year or so. (4x a week at night)
Oh and I just turned 49. (May 16th)
Omg I'm new to tret and can't wait for the full blown effect
Btw did u see effects on fine lines around mouth if u had any??
Please share which one you use (if there’s one specifically that’s better) how much is it and is it covered by insurance?!?
@@patrinaadger111 Probably depends on your particular insurance, but mine is *not* covered. It's $pendy - around $65 for a 1.5 oz. tube, but it lasts a long time because you need very little. If you're not currently using it, my advice is to start with the lowest strength and to start *slowly.* I wouldn't go much more often that once every four days for a month and then bump up to once every three days, and so on. Give yourself time. I wish my derm had started me out this way, but she started me on the medium strength every night. It was horrible, and I had to stop using it for several months. I watched a lot of videos and reintroduced it slowly and that has made a huge difference.

i’m an avid abbey watcher as well as doctorly and i have to say she is very transparent with her routine and her journey. she uses a combination of tretinoin and spironolactone which has helped with her acne. she says treat does the heavy lifting but she also discusses other treatments that she’s found helpful including salicylic acid, hypochlorus acid spray, copper peptides, red light therapy, serums, and she really goes into depth and is very transparent about what she puts on her face. but she chalks up most of her success with her skin to tretinoin doing the heavy lifting. she also has quite a few videos on how to start tretinoin and avoid irritation. i love abbey!!!
Yes! Love that you showed abbey yung, she’s amazing!
Could you talk more about the minoxidil and tret combo for hair loss? Thanks y’all rock!! ❤
I tried it about 10 years ago for the first time with no guidance. I wanted to rip my face off due to it being itchy and I stopped. Your advice here is key. I started back up again and now at 1% everyday! It is the GOAT!
I can second this. I have history of severe cystic acne, post acne hyperpigmentation and scars. The only thing that worked topically for me is Tretinoin, by the grace of Allah my skin even tolerated 0.1%. It also renewed my uneven skin tone, improved texture and also healed some of my scars. I used it with oral Spirinolactone. ❤ الحمد الله

True. I used to spend big bucks on skincare only to see zero improvements. Recently I cleared out my vanity all I could see was.... I was deceived by capitalism big time. 😅. Less is more. My skin is not anywhere near perfect but better thn when I had used all those junks. 😅

Also , I apply it to damp skin and if it feels like too much I pat my face with a dry cloth. Hope this helps
I’m 57 and I loved the sun and tanning beds (unfortunately) for most of my life. I have a few sunspots but surprisingly my skin looks pretty good. I think a lot of this is genetics. However, I started on retin-a almost three months ago and I see a huge difference already. Don’t forget to check the goodrx prices if your insurance doesn’t pay. I pay about $15 a month using goodrx for the retin-a whereas generic tretinoin was much more expensive using goodrx. My pharmacy allows me to pick the cheapest. I started with agency. Then I asked my primary care physician for a script for tret and he gave it to me! I still get both and alternate as agency’s formulas contain other ingredients that are really helping. I can’t wait to see my skin in a year. Also you have to wear sunscreen! Something I have never done but now I’m all into sunscreen and trying to find my hg.
Can you tell me what drug store you use goodrx for retin a? I have used goodrx for years on other scripts including tetrinoin. But now that i want to bump up to .1 strength (with a dr presc) goodrx isnt working. I cant pay $113 a month!

Tried everything and none of that worked for me. Derm told me to stop using due to terrible dry eye.

I get that, but what if we want to prevent wrinkles and fine lines on the eyelids, crow's feet, and under the eyes? I'm 24 and want to prevent my whole face from anti-aging
I have been using retinA for close to thirty years now. I know I didn’t do it the right way. I just got the highest dose and went at it every night. My skin did pealed a lot. But to me that was my reward. That was what I wanted to see. My husband is a cardiologist and I just asked him to get it from hospital pharmacy. My skin does look like Aby. I can’t se my pores. NO dark spots. And I get compliments every place I go. Love retinA!!!
Good thinking! Lol when my husband worked in the NHS I wish I had asked him to get me some too. Why didn't I think of this 🤔
Did you have any side effects using retinA? It has warning at the back that may cause birth deflect.
No side effects at all other than the expected peeling which I like to see. I had my two kids when started using it. If you are planing pregnancy then i suggest stoping using it.
I have very dry skin which made applying Tretinoin difficult. I learned that using a moisturizing toner before did the trick . Without it the Tretinoin would not spread on my dry skin causing me to use too much which led to overly dry peeling skin in am. I am 63 and I still get compliments on my skin
I admit I use vit C, peptides and sunscreen daily as well as acids once a week, but the T is THE GOAT!
Thanks Guys - learn so much from you both🙏
I'm constantly listening to "not using peptides with retinol/tretinoin". Maybe it's just about copper peptides, that's why I'd like to ask you what peptides and Vitamin C have you been using?
Well, maybe a whole routine?! 😂
Anyways, thank you in advance.
Hey what peptide do u use??
@@DoraSometimesI have dry skin. I use a Vit C plus e plus ferulic acid serum (Timeless) each morning, After 15 minutes I put on a peptide moisturizer (Acure whipped night cream) and after 20 minutes my sunscreen. At night I use The Ordinary Buffet plus Copper Peptide serum, after it fully dries my tretinoin 0.05, then after that has absorbed CeraVe Skin Renewing Night Cream.
Great and very useful video! I used tablets for a few months 3-4 years ago due to issues with rocasea and it really helped. But my skin got so dry that I had to drench it not to be completely miserable. I would think that would be a lesser issue with a cream, but I can see Abbey uses a lot of moisture on her skin, so I guess the effect is still there. She looks great :)
If you feel like the cream formulation always causes breakouts, try the gel version before quitting! This was my case. I was on the cream for a whole year and never felt like my skin stayed clear or consistent. It was really depressing trying to be consistent while the breakouts always came back. I have zero breakouts on the gel formulation and I regret trying it sooner. I have combo, acne prone skin.
Is menarini tretinoin gel or cream?
I agree
This is interesting because it's the opposite for me.
Gel only comes in higher strength and goes deeper and peels more

Love the acronym 🐐 but seriously it does work. I started in my 40s and now at 61 (over two decades later), I’m seeing the difference compared to ppl my age. No pores, firm smooth skin texture, zero wrinkles, no blemishes etc and just overall youthful appearance. This was the only product I’ve ever used with no morning or night routines other then a cheap day moisturizer & occasional sunscreen.
I love Abbey Yung so much and I'm glad that she's just not any other skincare guru... she actually is pretty knowledgeable on ingredients and skin science so it's satisfying to watch her. Plz I am new to retinol plz can you how to start and brand is best
@@baghaga1138 That’s exciting! How old are you? Make sure to lock it in and use it for the rest of your life. Retinoids are the best anti aging ingredient. There is no “best” product. The best product is the one you will actually use and afford. CeraVe is good, Neutrogena is good- ROC, Avene. Doesn’t matter the brand. But you need to decide if you want a retinol moisturizer or serum. A retinol moisturizer is a one-product routine and quick. Just apply it at night and you’re done ✅- that’s it. A retinol serum will require a moisturizer afterward. If you don’t want two steps then get a retinol cream and not a serum.
Tips: Start slow. Watch for stinging and irritation. Make sure you’re always moisturizing to prevent dryness and redness. Stop using retinol for 2 days if you notice irritation then resume. Use sun protection during the day. Use retinol at minimum 3x per week and work your way up to nightly use.
This post is discussing prescription Tretinoin though which isn’t over the counter. If you aren’t able to get this then retinol over the counter is still find and gives the same benefits long term. Plus, Tretinoin is STRONG and starting off with retinol is a smarter approach anyways. So use retinol for about a year or two and eventually graduate to Tret.
@@Melon29813 who are the others?
I discovered I should be using at retinoid from actually Dr Dray, another channel I love as much as this one; I started using adapalene initially, which then in Canada we still needed a prescription for. I didn't have acne, I was using it solely for antiaging purposes. I also never used to wear sunscreen so I learned a bit later in life that I SHOULD be every single day, even indoors. I started my journey of daily sunscreen and adapalene in 2020 and I have had SUCH a huge improvement in my skin; texture, pigmentation, evenness, plumpness... people always think I'm 10 years younger than I am. I finally started TRETINOIN 2 months ago and I'm just stoked for what the future holds! Also over the last couple of years I've discovered and started using other actives like niacinamide, vitamin c, azelaic acid etc - learning so much from you guys and Dr Dray as well. ❤
Do you need prescription for tretinoin in Canada and how much is it
@@Tofunmi11 yes we do. It's not bad, about $20-30 a month.
Informative video, however, I have a question. How long is Trentinoin active? Read four hours on the internet. Maybe reapply after that time if your skin is not sensitive? Also, is pharmaceutical Retin A the same as Trentinoin? And what is the difference?
Been using tretinoin for 17 years. I used it for acne, then i took oral prescription for 6 months twice (because my acne came back with a vengeance) now i use the topical cream. No crows feet. Skin is plump, but it was irritating at 1st. My dr even brought me back to .5% because 1% she thought i can handle the higher dosage but it made me so dry is itchy.
I think its the only skincare I will use forever.
I just started using this a few months ago. I love it. I have used retinoid for about 2 years, but this really is changing my fine lines around my eyes and the flaky patches on the side of my mouth. I can't wait to see the results in another 3 or 6 months. Especially with the dark spots.

I was doing amazingly on adapalene nightly for acne for three years, until I started a prescription medication for something else in April, and the acne I had under control came back with a vengeance. I start tretinoin .025 tonight. I'm 40 so it's probably time anyway, but I still think Adapalene is an excellent choice for anyone who can't afford to see a derm.

You should use BHA also. It helps with acnes.
I’ve been waiting for this one! Thank you Doctor’s. I think it should be avail OTC in the U.S. It is sold OTC in Mexico, Costa Rica and Dominican Republic. I paid $25 for a tube in PVR last year.
I agree it should be over the counter in the USA. Unfortunately the pharmaceutical industry owns our government, so they’ll probably never make something so good, and something so popular, over the counter. The pharmaceutical industry, and our Congress members, need to keep making those millions 🤬
I purchased 5 boxes over the country in Turkey. It was $6 dollars.
When I run out, can always go back to Turkey on vacation to get more
In india I got it for free from near by gov. dispensary ...
I have sensitive skin (lots of drugstore products inflame my skin) but pure tretinoin from a dermatologist has surprisingly never been a problem for me,
Me neither. I’ve always tolerated it well (way better than adapalene surprisingly) & I have rosacea and super sensitive skin. And if I can use it-even without moisturizer in summer-every single night without irritation, most anybody can. I’ve never even had flakiness or redness from it, even around eyes, lips etc.
I think there’s a lot of fear mongering on the internet around the possible irritation it can cause that is largely overblown. (Sure it’s great to be aware of potential for redness etc. but people treat it like looking at a drop of it will fry your skin off or something.) I am convinced that most irritation people experience is trying to use other exfoliants etc at the same time & overdoing it. I am pretty sure it not actually tretinoin itself that is causing those issues a lot of the time. I always, always wait the full 30 min after washing to apply it tho, so maybe that could be a factor?
Which brand is that please?

@GlickTheExplorer I hear you!!!! I said the same thing when my Dermatologist told me that. I tried to do that, but for me, a pea size wasn't quite enough, so I would do little dots randomly over my face and then spread it out, or I just did the spot treatments.

Plz can you share what brand did you use plz can you share some details I will Appreciate it
I don’t think it matters what brand as it’s all the same ingredient in whatever prescription you get.
1% ? isn't that too strong ? how long did it take you to get there ?
@@davidcop-a-feel9699 They mean 0.1%. And unless you have resistant acne you don't need to go up in strength beyond 0.025%. The studies show the higher strengths don't work any better with continued use. They all get you to the same place.
I’m worried - because is tretinoin only for acne? Or can we use it even if we don’t have acne?
If you use tretionin and all this kind of product, you must use a good sunscream as well, 30 or 50 spf.
I add a little Cerave Healing Ointment or Aquaphor to my nighttime moisturizer and apply Tretinoin after that. It helps tremendously with dryness!
Thank you for making this video, it's very helpful❤
Please do a video on Differin/Adapalene! Being an OTC it’s a more accessible retinoid and your perspective would help a lot
the same concepts all apply since it’s in the same category of drugs. I’ve used both and found essentially no difference in usage info. The anti-aging is theoretically better w tretinoin since it hits 3 receptors instead of 2 that adapalene does, but I still saw great results w Differin.
I really liked the explanation of why a product with the extra ingredients as well as the retinol can be a little more advantageous. I’ve taken retin A for 40 years now. I remember being in high school and I purposely tried to get as much sun because it reduced my acne (by burning my skin!). I think it’s always worth mentioning the emotional toll dealing with acne can take. At least now maybe my skin is “better” now because of my early anti-aging! Lastly, you guys are both soo handsome!!! (Who says keyboard courage is always bad!)
It wasn't the sunburn, it was the vitamin D.
My aunt had acne, and way back when, sunlamps were the treatment, and for her, that resulted in skin cancer. I also had a good friend when I was younger who had really bad acne, and later all the scars. My heart broke for her. She was the reason I started using Tretinoin, she gave me a tube of her lower strength when she moved up to a higher one. I didn’t use it long because there wasn’t a lot of info out there back then about starting slow, or using moisturizer too -and I just couldn’t deal with the peeling. When I started up again in my early 50s, I did it right and the results have been amazing.
I went to a dermatologist and he didn’t help me out that much really. He prescribed this to me literally 4 days later my whole face was red and rash. I had to be going to work with that 😂. Thanks for the info on this!
Any update?
@@jatinsharma8967 I’m on accutane now
Yeah what happened next?
I want a video about shaving, the effects on the skin. The best way to keep a clean shave everyday without irritation, etc.
TY
Many of these pointers have been told to me by dermatologists before. But still learned a lot! ❤
Started slowly 6 months ago with only weekly applications. I'm starting to do 2 times a week maybe 3 if It seems I can tolerate it! Taking it slow. The results so far have been great!
Does it gives whitening to our skin? Mam please reply
Hey Doctorly,
I have been facing a problem with "Sweaty face" (Facial Hyperhidrosis) which even makes it worse when I have an oily skin.
It just melts down all your skincare products and specially sunscreen when am outside. Will be great if you can guide us to the solution. THANK YOU
It would have been great to hear this info from my actual dermatologist 🥴 literally rx'd it and gave with zero info. But learning to use the product and I will never be without it now that I know how to use it. Education!
Back in the 1970s, my Derm wrote me a script (for acne) and said use it twice a day and that was the name of that tune😳🤷♂️
When it comes to skincare I trust these two with my life!!!
*Jennifer Myers* and her video _18 years using treti_ is a YT must🖤.
we'll have to check it out! - shah
She released an updated video of using it for 20 years... love her. The simplicity of her routine is truly darling
@@nickylapiel2675 Yes, 😍 Casually, the notification appeared after I wrote this comment. I could listen her talking for days. Such a rare genuine gem✨
I have been usuing Tret for the past 3 years! And I love it.
I think I have sensitive skin. But I started using a product with retinol recently and there was no irritation at all. So I'm planning to slowly adapt tretionoin into my skincare to help with my severe hyperpigmentation
Did you see any difference
@@prathyushareddy7127 my breakouts reduced quite a lot, while using it i didn't get like big pumples, just smaller ones. my skin became really dry and flakey tho, but i think that's normal. I stopped for a while because my skin was sensitive. But when I get breaktout, i sometimes apply it those areas, and they reduced fast
I would loooove a podcast interview with Abby or a collab video! Abby is amazing!❤
It’s funny when Dr Shah said you’re less likely to use Tret when your skin becomes irritated. I remember being super happy - I was like Yay it’s working!!!!! I stated using it more 😆
What’s a great product to start with for extremely sensitive skin? ❤ the video!
Thank for the vedio very well explained.
I am 71 years old with eczema, rosecea, and very sensitive and fair skin. I have used Tretinoin Rx Cream for over 20 years. I sandwich the Tretinoin between a serum and moisturizer to avoid the extreme dryness. The Tretinoin has markedly decreased the erythema (redness) from the rosacea. I do not have fine lines around my lips, nor crows feet. I was never a sun bather. I did have microchanneling done to remove the papules from rosacea on my nose, but the Tretinoin has kept my skin smooth. I still have slight redness on my cheeks, but just add a little blush and I am good to go. I also use Tretinoin on my neck and do not have a saggy neck, yet.
As someone with rosacea and fair and sensitive skin, this is very encouraging to hear. There are also newer retin-a formulations out now that are better tolerated by sensitive skins, and retinaldehydes are a good place to start since they're less sensitizing and almost as effective. I'm getting some laser treatments currently so waiting to be done with those before I start retin-a.
Aren't crows feet from squinting, muscle movement?
Congratulations! I wish I have the same results!
Been using it for 4 years. I have not gotten a new wrinkle since and seen some disappear. It is the GOAT no doubt in my mind.
Does tretenoin get rid of fine lines also?
Wow I did stop because of the breakout but my dermatologist did tell me it would. I’ll definitely start again. Thanks 😊
Thank you so much guys for this video. ❤️
I am so happy Tretinoin is available in Asia where I live for literally $5 a tube. There are like 20 different brands as well.
maybe it is low quality adulterated Tretinoin, hence the low price. Lot of Asian versions are faulty.
@@condirice9365no tret really is cheap here even my dermatologist sold me tret and it wasn’t remotely as expensive as it is in the us
I appreciate you guys so much!! Dr.Shah, you are so handsome but it looks like you’re burning the candle at both ends. Please get some much needed rest and take care of yourself first above all other things. Your health is everything! Much love! ❤
I have rosacea and tan skin and was worried about sensitivity so I started with cerave encapsulated retinol. No irritiation and some slight benefits after 4 months of regular use. I then started using Azaelic acid (15%,) with nicinamide and huge improvement in texture, dark spots and redness. After a while i moved on to .025 tretinoin and no irritation. I started slow and now i can do 7 nights a week. I use Azaelic Acid in the AM.
But above all else, use SUNSCREEN! Every single time you leave your house. UV rays are not visible.
I just got my first tretinoin script last week! Can’t wait!
I can not believe I was prescribed this but didn’t realize how amazing it was.
Same! I got it for eczema and haven’t used it because it didn’t seem to work. Now I know it can take a while.
I love Abby! But how about referencing someone older? Angie from Hot and Flashy is 60 and has seen benefits from Tretinoin for 10 years.
Yes now she’s a sponsor for Agency
SHE USES AGENCY VERSION
@@lovly2cu725is that bad?
Angie has also had surgeries, so who knows if Tret really was the reason.
@@sharonharris9782 what surgeries???? She has never mentioned anything about surgeries
I really like your videos it is very informative. What do you think of the Rachel River device that has been advertised everywhere?
Very well put👏
Does retinal do the job ? I use retinaldehyde for the past 3 years
Shall I upgrade to tret or is it not necessary?
I think there are studies comparing the impact of retinoic acid and retinaldehyde over time, showing similar results at the 1-year mark. If that is the finding, then what is the driver to use the prescription version?
Your sandwich practice works great for me. And I have had to start over re the dosage when I have done other things to my face like chemical peels.
the way Dr. Maxfield looks while Dr. Shah speaks 😭😍😍😍😍
Just got this prescribed today. The last year of my life I’ve had the worst skin condition of my life. So excited to ease this into my routine and get my skin back
How’s it going?
How is it going?
I’ve been using tretinoin for almost 4 years now, and I have nothing but positive results. Yes you will have the peeling and possible acne flare out for like the first 6-8 months, but after that it’s smooth sailing. Of course there is the occasional peeling, but it’s just proof that it’s working. I love it, I’ll use it forever! ❤️❤️❤️
I m using it from last 6/7 months but i m still getting acne no visible result yet is it normal ? Pls let me know
@@soubiakhalid2738 everyone is different. Unless you’re like breaking out in large numbers, I’d say that’s normal. I still get a pimple or 2 or 3 every now and then, but I don’t really mind. Also, if you’re expecting like dramatic results, you’ll be disappointed. The visible improvements you can expect are from textured, tone of your skin, evenness, discoloration, and overall glow of your skin. So i don’t know what your expectations are so I can’t really say.
Which percentage do you use tretinoion? . 1% or less then?.I'm 23
Can i use it and continue it forever of tretinoion. 0025%??? Plz tell me
@@Reignebow619 yes exactly i mean when i can expect evenness and clear skin ? I m not getting too much acne now on n off i get and its ok and nowadays i m using Azelic acid with tretnoin so i m waiting for even skin tone does it take time?
Can you use Salicylic acid to help deal with the pealing?
I have been using it for about 43 years. I still get comments on my great skin. After washing my face I use a one half pea size dose mixed with Eucerin face (30 SPF) lotion. FWI, if you go to Europe or basically any other country you can get it over the counter in the pharmacy. If I travel out of the country I buy several tubes. a tube lasts a whole year!
Is it okay to mix it with moisture ? Or separate separate
2:02 "I think that that cannot be *understated."* Nope, overstated.
I started out with a pretty high dose of glycolic acid nightly for quite a few years before I ever started on Tret, I think that’s why I didn’t really have a problem and could adjust to it pretty well.
Can you do a video on daily skincare steps incorporating retinol/ tretinoin, hydraulic acid, vitamin c, collagen, glycolic acid, etc. Thanks.
Hello, I’m 58 and just started Tretinion . I have really good skin for my age, I’ve used SPF all my life, pretty much. So age is setting in and im thinking, do I start?? So I jumped and asked my FP for a script 0.05. I have combo skin and it took me to a place I’ve never been….dryness. Did some homework, started reading labels for B3 B5 vit c, ceramides, niaccinamide and glycerin. Avene recovery cream, LRP Double Moisturizer, Vanicream, Ella MD, Skinfix and Jordan Samuel Performance Cream. I kept my skin barrier happy with these products and I can use. It 3 to 4 times a week. My skin looks so good and feels better.I’m an official convert to y’all’s channel and Tret.
9 yrs of tretinoin, my advice is start slowly with .25 and don’t give up! I’m now doing .1 every night and my skin is close to perfect. Of course a little Botox to help isn’t a bad idea!
.025*
thank you for this! im starting .025 today hoping to build my way up slowly to .1
@@kart1372I am using tretion for 20 days ..my skin is peeling unevenly what should I do.
Hey , can you pls tell how you do Botox? I mean do you make any break before appointment for Botox ?
how is .25 lesser than .1?
I was ID’d yesterday. I’m 43. Use Retinols. Never hesitate.
I have suffered with acne most of my life and I am in my 30s. I went to a dermatologist and he suggested me using tretinoin. I didn't use it regularly and was still suffering with acne. Then my GP told me you need to use it regularly to see results. Now its been 2 yrs that I have been using and I see the difference. In the first year there was a lot of purging that I thought this isn't working for me but nevertheless I still continued and I am thankful that I didn't give up.
Did you use it everyday?
@@neyssa6632 In the first year I used it every other day to make my skin get used to it. Then the following year I used it 5 times a week and I still continue doing it. While I was doing it I noticed whenever I was having high sugary foods I was breaking out so I cut down on my sugar intake.
