'Americans are clamoring for immigrant labor…Whether they realize it or not'

  • Immigration remains a top issue for voters, with fear mongering remaining central to the Republican party’s messaging, but reports show that immigrants are key to our economy’s success. “We don't often see all the ways in which immigrant workers make our lives less expensive and more efficient. Growth happens more quickly and it's more affordable because of their presence,” says Pulitzer Prize-winning immigration reporter Caitlin Dickerson. “Americans really are clamoring for immigrant labor, and it benefits our lives, and that's what these reports are telling us.”

It's more about field work to be honest. Most Americans won't do it and trying to banish immigrants, legally entering or not, is what is driving up food costs. Add to that the taxes they pay without getting benefits back helps the rest of us in what money they add to those programs they cannot get benefits from. Beefing up our education systems would also benefit us better as said companies will hire out from other countries to get better trained company labor because people who might actually do well from this country can't afford the education. That's a much bigger issue in business level hires.

@@afry6400 Yes, thank you for making this point. Rather than taking away work from American citizens, they are doing work most Americans won't suffer through. Some say that because immigrants are willing to work for a low wage, they are making those jobs unattractive for Americans. What is actually making those salaries so low is the desire of Americans for cheap goods and services. Same reason so many jobs went overseas or were automated. If Americans weren't so obsessed with getting more and more stuff beyond what they need for cheap prices (while large companies will jettison workers or outsource overseas before raising salaries and reducing dividends) millions of workers abroad wouldn't be doing the jobs of millions of Americans who would still be working in manufacturing or services like call centers.
I would take issue with one point you made. Don't immigrants get some benefits? For example, their children are expected to go to school. They are served in emergency rooms at hospitals. And when Abbott or DeSantis send bus- and planeloads of immigrants north, officials at their destinations do not send them back to Florida or Texas or Mexico, but have to provide them with some kind of humane accommodation. That costs money, which is one of the big complaints of right wingers. It's true things were more orderly when my grandparents came to America. Most people had established some kind of contact who would set them up in a neighborhood with other families from the same country. Then again, though my grandparents were looking for more freedom and fewer wars than in Europe, and a better economic deal for their children, they had time to prepare to emigrate. They weren't fleeing for their lives from drug cartels and gangs.

If the feds grant them work permits, then those cities and metro areas will need less or even no aid. Granting people some sort of status, even if it’s a temporary status, requires statutory reforms that would need to be passed by congress. @@james-rd4dq the majority of the people crossing over have their asylum papers and a court date but are being lumped in with true “illegal” border crossers who don’t even stop for border patrol. Those are far and few between. Most of these people go and turn themselves in to border patrol, seek asylum, and are on the list to have their case heard. Unfortunately, the court dates aren’t happening for years and years (five years plus in most cases.) During that time they have to wear an ankle monitor, are not allowed to get a job on the books (which is why you see a lot of people working off the books because they have to support themselves somehow). So these right-wingers who say that everyone at the border is illegal are just plain incorrect or are lying. Anyone you see crossing the border with border control IS legal. That’s why we need comprehensive immigration reform. Unfortunately, Donald Trump decided to use the most recent bill as a political pawn and had the MAGAs in the House vote against the bill that they negotiated themselves so he could run on it. Republicans are the ones soft on the border.

American citizens are willing and eager to do the work. We just don’t what to keep on and being Taken advantage of. Union companies understand this and realize illegal immigrants. Will do the same work for 70% cheaper wage. The school system is a perfect example, janitor maintenance. You will be hired to clean toilets, wash the floors wax the floors, buff the floors if the power went out you had to fix. The electrical panel change out lightbulbs do the electric wiring if a wall fell down in the school janitor maintenance we have to fix it.we mow the grass, take out the trash, fix the playground. If it broke, we do everything to maintain, the The school to keep it from crumbling. That type of job used to start out at 20 bucks an hour and you would be able to top out at 40 bucks an hour. The unions eventually realized illegal immigrants would do that same job for 10 bucks an hour and top out at 15 bucks. then when the American worker the American citizen would file grievances and complain about this treatment. The union would just say the state would say you are just being lazy you just don’t want to work.
