I am mixed Puerto Rican and Black, and can relate. Sadly, Washington State (especially Olympia/Lacey) is very racist and in your face about it. Mentioned this to family and friends as well, but gave up trying to explain. They would have to live here to understand. Many seem to believe this area is a liberal paradise. However, Washington State is easily the most racist area I have ever lived (this is including Texas as well). Often seems like I am in a Twilight Zone movie and have been transported back to the 1950s. When you call racist out, they do everything to make you seem like the problem. For example, a white female Bank of America employee would not let me into my bank branch because she claimed they were short-staffed. Even gave me rude eye and hand gestures. However, I noticed they let an older white woman enter the bank just before me. So asked when can I come back, thinking she would say in a couple of hours or tomorrow. She actually told me to return in "30 days" which I thought was odd and a blow off answer. So the next day, I returned, she tried to hassle me again at the door. Guess what, the bank had a full staff and was operating normally. So I had no idea why she told me to return in 30 days? Demanded to speak with the bank manager and called that racist out in front of everyone. In front of the manager, she then gave the worst apology I ever heard, "I am sorry *if you* thought I was being disrespectful". She became upset when I gestured with a downward hand wave, implying "she was full of it!" She wasn't sorry, only sorry I called her out in front of the entire bank staff. I also didn't accept her lame apology. Then she tried to say, "see, he is disrespecting me." Give me a break! Bunch of clowns! If she is married, I really feel sorry for husband and kids. Good Lord!

My son and I are on Vacation in Seattle from Los Angeles, born and raised. We felt like animals as well being at the zoo. Like we belonged in cages as well. My son cried because people kept staring at us. I began to say hello and waving at people who kept staring at us. It’s sickening and uneasy.

Expect you to get out the way. People are very rude there. I’m pretty sure they’re racist they’re just not open about it. Doesn’t matter who I’m with maybe it’s because I’m married to a white woman. I couldn’t tell you, but it’s always been like that for me. doesn’t matter who I’m with. I’m with my family though, so I just move out the way, but sometimes I don’t want to to be honest just to see what they do. You can say no they just don’t think about it. I've been called a 'beaner', I've been stopped and verbally assaulted when crossing the border because we were Mexican, I've been told multiple times to stop speaking Spanish because "we're in America! speak English", and I've been looked at weird for speaking Spanish. and they do not understand. what do you want me to do? speak English when it is not my native language? it's painful once you realize that what is being said to you, is being said with malicious intent...
I'm surprised to see how many uneducated, racist, and ignorant people are in this video right now. either disliking it, commenting on unnecessary things, and insulting this story. i don't think you guys realize the damage you are causing to others. seriously. it's ridiculous.

There is shameless discrimination. And then there is subtle discrimination. We have it where I live, but they do it in a way that they know they can get away with it. What happened at first, happened years ago. I went to get my health insurance and even though the whole time, we spoke English, for a whole hour, they kept sending me paperwork in Spanish. I kept calling them to change it and explained to them that we had talked for an hour in English and there was no reason for them to send me paperwork in Spanish and they never changed it. Then I went to pick up medicine in the pharmacy and I had always had everything done in English but the racist man I was talking to in English decided to change the paperwork I needed to sign to Spanish. I told him, "Why is it in Spanish? I know English". He said, "Mam, just sign it". I went for my flu shot yesterday and I had enough, when I saw all the paperwork in Spanish, even though it would take more time away from my busy day. I went back and told them, "This is in Spanish. I don't speak Spanish". I was born and raised in USA. And if I am talking to you in English, there is no reason for you to "assume" I speak Spanish and not English.

Race is actually a social construct with no real scientific foundation besides the fact that humans who lived closer to the equator developed more melanin overtime; this is the body's natural way of protecting itself from UV rays. That's it. We are all basically genetically the same. Therefore, "race" is more of a social factor, arbitrarily enforced and can mean many things to many different people. Yes, technically, Mexican isn't a race, it's a nationality, but most white people in America treat it just as if were a race. That's because, in America, race is historically linked to class, with white people on top of the hierarchy and black people at the bottom. Hope this helps.

And if you say the opposite and you would dig in your heels in your home country and pull yourself up by your own bootstraps, tell me how many under similar conditions have decided that that is the pragmatic and intelligent decision given all of the options on the table? @Pedro Takahashi Gunderson Unfortunately, the Earth didn't consider humanity when it decided upon the "equitable" geographic distribution of resources. In particular the equatorial regions and near the equator in general, which happen to have enormous pockets of humanity, some of the most difficult agricultural conditions exist due to unreliable and inhospitable soil for farming. That's basically the starting condition for a civilization: Can you feed people? More importantly past the hunter-gatherer context: Do you have surplus? Once that chain of events starts, generational passing of wealth(and knowledge, and education, and demeanor, and epigenetics) begins. As an example, Africa has some of the worst riverine conditions for starting a civilization on the planet outside of the Nile. Go to most other countries with high rates of poverty and you'll find similar starting conditions. There's a very good reason that some of the most successful civilizations started in temperate conditions with good weather patterns: The Yellow River, The Levant/Tigris/Euphrates, The Nile, Indus Valley, Anatolia.

Wrong. Many Japanese came here illegally during WW2. And yes it is the fact that there's not a large Japanese population, outside of California. So due to this, it gives people less judgements towards the Japanese because most people here aren't use to being around them or interact with them. Whereas Mexicans have a large population because the west coast used to be Mexico. Most Mexicans do tend to stick to their communities and just work hard. But that's not ever going to stop racist people from stereotyping them.
