This was the beginning of Federer 's domination of Rafa in the last leg of their rivalry. He beat Rafa here, Melbourne,Sunshine Double,Shanghai ...still their H2H ended at 24 16 in Rafa's favour.

just like nadal has a better h2h becouse most of their matches were played on clay, federer has a better last leg h2h becouse most were played on hard and grass. People tend to think about Nadal's dominance on their rivalry but its always been this way (obviously, federer was less dominant on grass and hard than nadal was on clay)

@@angelosbardellaits also. mainly cuz they played a bunch on hard in 2017 when federers backhand was peaking, but since then he hadnt played federer at all on hard so this domination was very skewed. If they played in like 2019 or 2020 or even 2018 on hard I am sure rafa would have won most of them. Except maybe indoor hard though it would still be competitive.

apart from the surfaces just mentioned
Nadal's foot speed and topspin are also in decline as well
he managed to stay competitive against other players by playing a bit more aggressively (hitting flatter and using more variety)
but the advantage over Federer wasn't what it used to be
Federer is far less troubled by flat and variety shots than topspins

Nadal had not beaten Fed since 2014 on hard/grass. 6-0 plus a W/O in that time. A couple of those 7 matches were beat downs. Stronger Fed backhand, holding the baseline was the key. If you can’t push Fed back off the line, he’s coming in on your short balls, better than anyone to ever play the game, and you’re going to lose.

Bro of those 40 encounters 20 were on hard courts and 16 on clay and if you really think that h2h was so messed up than federer had the opportunity to make up for that margin in his hard court match ups with rafa in which he is slightly leading by 11-9.
Rafa beat Roger at a Wimbledon final but Roger is 6-0 in French open.
Rafa is also leading hard courts GS matches by 3-1. You should be happier that Roger didn't get to meet in USO because there Novak also couldn't do much damage to him otherwise h2h lead would have been greater than present.

Nadal just simply could beat Federer anymore as soon as Fed changed racquets and shored up his backhand. He started taking the ball early against Nadal and it was over. Nadal couldn't blast him off the court or out serve him. Argue it all you want, but since the racquet change Federer was 7-1 and even that French was played in a tornado and much more suited for Nadals style. Had the weather been good, Federer could have won that as well. Again, you can try to argue what I'm saying, but it's just the reality.

The faster the court the more Federer prevailed and the slower ones Nadal dominated. Federer’s the best ball striker there’s ever been. Nadal’s (and Djokovic) superior athleticism paired with the slower courts allowed them to get the better of Federer in the late part of his career. Miami 2005, Hamburg 2007 & Roland Garros 2011 were examples of him overcoming slow surfaces with superior play.

Another thing taking the BH early, hence held the baseline from both wings even if shanked here and there, in other words was more aggressive all the time.

It's basically the opposite of Cincy 2013 where Nadal had a good year, Fed had an awful year but that match in particular still ended up being quite high quality.

    This match proves 3 things:
First: From this match Federer figured out how to play Nadal on fast surfaces by improving the way he hit his backhand. In 2017 he did this tactic of half-volley, flattening out his backhand which some of his fanboys call NEO. I just call it flatter backhand. Had Federer did this kind of play since the start of his rivalry with Nadal, he would do way better in their prior matchups.
Second: The claim of his fans how Fed from 2017 would have handled Djokovic better than he did in 2015 is also a myth. Fed did get a lot of confidence from winning AO 2017, by beating his trickiest opponent in the final, but that does not reflect how he would do against Djokovic whatsoever. Djokovic is not Nadal, it takes a much different approach to play and win against him. But credit to Fed, he did improve against Nadal, and that is still admirable. His top-level though wasn't that much different than what he showed at 2015 Wimbledon and Us Open. Perhaps slightly better. It just appears that he improved so much because he started beating Nadal on fast courts. Djokovic, i think, if he remained healthy, would still beat Fed on both AO and Wimby in 2017. Perhaps with slightly more difficulty than he did in their 2015 slam encounters.
Third: Djokovic is a better player than Nadal and Federer, just to point that out to all Fedal fans. Cheers. 😎😂🖖

Djokovic is not better than fedal at their best im sorry. If an out of prime fed beats peak novak in 2011 in FOUR and beats near peak nole in wimbledon in FOUR in 2012, it shows you that prime fed is better than prime nole. Prime fed had a bigger forehand, much better movement, was hungrier (to beat pete’s record), more shotmaking, more stamina, etc. a 34 year old fed beat peak novak three times in 2015 in STRAIGHTS. Just shows you how it wouldve played out if it was prime fed. Also novak barely beats a grandpa fed at slams so i have no doubt that prime fed would beat him more often than not. As for nadal, you never saw him play when he could actually move. Playing nadal on hardcourt post 2013 is much different than pre. Go watch AO 2009 nadal or 2008 olympics nadal or even 2010 uso nadal. The 2008 wimbledon nadal (or even 2010) would take out novak on grass trust me. Movement is a big thing in tennis.

But let me put it this way, 2011 was the highest peak in tennis history. Literally ripped Fedal a new ahole, rect them so bad that it wasnt even a competition. Djokovic lost to Fed at FO yes, but after beating him 3 times before that match, and one more time after that. He was at a 43 match winning streak. Destroyed Weakdal 6 time in a row that year, and it wasnt even close. Weakdal was only losing to Djokovic that year, and was more consistent than he was one year prior in 2010, so your excuse how he could barely walk, you can tell that bs to someone who didnt follow tennis from a long time ago. Sorry, but since 2011 Djokovic literally was sh**ing on Fed in their h2h, and was dominating Weakdal outside of clay, and even on clay he was beating Weakdal way more than the other way arround. Weakdal didnt win a match on hc since 2013. In 2011 Fed was still in his prime 29 and Nadal at his peak 25. So suck it and cry more baby boy 😥🤣
