What a level in 2006, a young Nadal vs Best Federer ever. Federer record that season was 92-5 (2nd best victory record ever after Rod Laver 1969 season and the best victory percentage ever), 4/5 defeats of Federer that year were against a 20-year-old Nadal. Nadal was the only one who could stop the best version of a player ever. What matches delivered those guys back in the day.

I think Nadal’s best chance at winning the ATP Finals was 2020.
No Federer, Thiem took down Djokovic. All Nadal needed to do was beat Medvedev, a guy he was beating again and again and again.
Nadal choked the SF to Medvedev, ending his best shot (I think he would have beaten Thiem).
He got closer in 2010 and 2013, but he was never going to beat an in form Djokovic and Federer indoors. 2020 is the one that got away to me.

Nadal just doesnt win hard court indoors tournament, 2019 ATP Final RR win against medvedev was a fluke and greatest medvedev choke.
He won only 1 indoor hard court tournament, that was in 2005. 18 years ago.
Indoor hard courts are fast, the ball rebounds faster and lower and flat shots are better in hard courts than topspin.

The ATP finals are bordering on being officially classed as “fast courts” by the official court index, and this year in some of the days it officially was a fast court as it was rated 45+. Nadal is simply not good on fast courts, even Wimbledon when he won probably wasn’t as quick as many of these indoor hard courts. The funny thing is, when people pedal the myth that the supposed “systemic slowing of the courts” (which never ACTUALLY occurred according to CPI) benefits Djokovic the most. Djokovic is literally a beast on true fast courts, we all know how he obliterated his competition this year at the fast ATP finals. It’s actually Nadal who for the vast majority of his career needed a SLOW or medium-slow court to win. Djokovic had no problem winning on slow, Medium-slow, medium, medium-fast, or fast. Nadal’s game is built around slow courts, Djokovic’s works on any of them, but even better on fast.

Nadal is simply not good on quick courts. The myth that Djokovic benefited most from the “slowing of the courts” (which by the way there is no proof of) is laughable because Djokovic is actually BETTER on quick courts than slow courts. Djokovic has dominated slow, medium-slow, medium, medium-fast, AND fast courts. 2023 ATP finals semifinals and finals both had a CPI rating of 45+, thus officially making it a fast court. We all know what Novak did in those matches. It’s actually Nadal, not Djokovic who can only win in slow conditions. Who is the player who has never won Shanghai, Paris or ATP finals? Nadal. And these are 3 of the quickest courts on tour. Conversely, Djokovic won all of those several times each.

But wait, in June 2021, just as Federer was about to lose the slam record he ACTUALLY SAID the following - *"it seems it's all about grand slam titles nowadays and I don't like that"*. you couldn't make it up. I can't think of anything more hypocritical said in sports history. Do you think that if Tom Brady was getting passed by for number of superbowl wins that he will come out with "it seems to be all about superbowl wins nowadays and I don't like that"?! Djokovic LOVED Federer's backhand. The 2003-2007 days when the opponents were unseeded Baghdatis or Philapoussis in slam finals or more often Roddick or Hewitt, when Nadal couldn't even make it past a US Open or AO 1/4 final.... they were then gone and under real pressure from a quality player the rally tolerance of Federer on the backhand would often end with 1. the weak backhand opening up space for Djokovic to own the rally, 2. the signature Federer backhand into the tramlines or 3. the Federer shank. That's the stupidest nonsense I've heard in a long time given his extraordinary resume, and just shows a complete lack of tennis knowledge and how this game actually works. Anyone with any tennis IQ will reasonably say Federer has one of the most complete backhands in the history of the sport: best backhand slice ever, best block-return of serve of the backhand side ever, one of the best droppers off the backhand ever. He is nearly pulling off EVERY shot in existence in this video off his backhand side. Federer lost to djokovic because Djokovic is the third coming in the GOAT triad. He is the youngest, the best of the 3, and the most complete of the 3 as he should be given he learned from the 2 best ever prior to him.

@@arunsekhar9288Novak is a medium defensive player. He is a wall, but he’s not explosive on offense. He thrives when the conditions are medium slow. Courts have slowed down (verifiable by rally length and other measures) so the game has favored his style for some time. Before then, there was more variety in court speed. Winning on multiple surfaces was a much more impressive feat back then. Now the surfaces are more or less homogenous.

Nadal missed the end-of-season finals 7 or 8 times in his career. Even in his best times. This is the biggest deficiency in his career. It would be great if he could win just one.
