- A short video on the life of menstrual cup pioneer Leona Watson Chalmers. Leona had BIG dreams for her life and with determination and confidence she moved from Ohio to NYC. Famously, she pawned the family piano to get there. Leona was successful and became a big star but only for a small amount of time. She married, moved to Philadelphia, had a child, and retired from public life or so it appears. Her husband tragically made her a widow after which she started her next chapter in life. She filed her first patent for a menstrual cup in 1935 then moved to NYC again. There she established her one woman show selling the Tassette by mail order. It was also sold in select drug stores. She also wrote two books. The wartime rubber shortage caused a hiccup for her plans but she tried again and again to make her cup a success. In her 70s she reads an ad by a business man in search of an exciting idea to buy. He buys it and relaunches Tassette, which years later relaunches again as Tassaway in a new design. The cup company goes into serious debt and folds, taking the idea with it until the Keeper Cup in 1987.

I'm definitely emotional thanks to my period today, but it's so touching to hear stories of women making progress happen in the most oppressive of times, helping women for decades to come. We hardly ever talked about any women in history when I was growing up. Thanks for sharing this story with us!
Women weren’t even allowed to open bank accounts when she started her business. Not sure if she had one from her marriage but it’s amazing to think of how many barriers she had to her success.
My first cup was The Keeper! I found it on a trip to Montreal Canada in some tiny eccentric store. I was 18. It changed my life.
I like this new more casual format, you were able to pack a lot of information into a quick 5 minutes!
tbf I was reading a script super fast to make this all fit into a shorer video but it did not. but noted about quicker content somewhere between a short and a 20 minutes long video as usual
I had to turn on the subtitles because of the fast-paced content 😂
oh man I guess my words were really flying @@katrinao4872
This was great. Well presented, informative and interesting. Thankyou 😊
that was a really informative 5 minutes! you've done so much research, thanks for sharing with us
I absolutely loved this. I really had no idea the history dated back so far, I would love more videos like this!
I love this style video! Super interesting way of explaining the history too. Thanks!
I am fan of your channel. You speak very fast, i need to change play speed. Thank you for these inspiring knowledge.
Great vid! Love the length and the way you presented the info. Menstrual cups are the way of the future.
Hey Kim! I just tried the Lena cup. They are so cool! They are game changers!
Yessss more history videos!! This was so interesting to learn
Loved the animations for this one! It didn't feel particularly casual because of them. I also love your dives into history. I was curious about the history of menstrual discs and used your article as a jumpimg off place. I ended up reading more and learning about an Australian doctor with a failed 2-in-1 diaphragm and menstrual disc, an American triathlete who made a dress out of Instead cups, Instead nearly disappearing not once but twice, and just how rapid the explosion of reusable discs was. It was a fascinating as adventure. Thank you!
I don’t know if they took the dress but the Smithsonian acquired many of the pieces from Mum.org. Harry Finley was the previous owner of the Instead disc. I have one unopened box from the 1990’s in my little period museum
@@PeriodNirvana That's awesome! I was talking about all of this with an older friend who told me she actually used an Instead disc back when they were on shelves
So interesting, thanks! Sorry to hear that your channel does not reach as many people as it used to, hope that changes soon!
My first cup was a cheap one from the next store and it wasn't good but I liked the concept so a week later I bought my second cup, the lunette. I still have the cup but it didn't fit anymore cause I haven't used it in 3 years (I was on the pill) and gained 15kg of weight. I tried my first disc at age 26 and the disc was bad and didn't fit good so I bought the hello disc a week later.
I like all your formats
This is so fascinating! I’ve always thought of cups as a relatively recent invention. I wonder if you know when cups were brought to the UK.
Hello, have loved your videos and even bought your hello disc when it first came out, however, it was much too big for me (also a bit too firm?) that it gave me cramps...I was wondering if there are any plans to release smaller version (the same size as the Lumma M or maybe even SAALT S) for us lower-than-avg cervix?
Could you please make a video on how to maintain the cup steriliser? I maintain a separate pot and also own an electric steriliser. I want to know what’s the best way of keeping those clean? Should they be replaced every few years? Do they grow any bacteria over time? Etc
I’ve always been scared to try a cup, my cervix is almost completely backwards
Can you please review Bodyotics menstrual discs please
Can you do a video about how to know your menstrual cup deal is actually broken ? I’ve pushed and poked this thing on stop for days now and I’ve grabbed the stem to pull it wiggle it out but it just not coming out 😔 I’ve been trying for days attempting to avoid merg but I think it’s my only resort now.
After stelizing the cup at the end of the period, is it necessary to stelize it again before using it in the next month?
As long as you stored it somewhere clean in a breathable pouch you don’t need to sterilize it again
