The Case for Free Healthcare and College in America: Learning from Global Models
      Introduction:
The United States, often regarded as a global economic powerhouse, stands out among developed nations for its absence of universal free healthcare and college education. In contrast to several countries that have successfully implemented such systems, the U.S. faces challenges related to accessibility, affordability, and equity in healthcare and higher education. This essay explores the compelling reasons why America should consider adopting policies that provide free healthcare and college education, drawing insights from successful models in other countries.
      Body:
Healthcare as a Basic Human Right:
Access to quality healthcare is universally recognized as a basic human right. Countries like the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia have implemented universal healthcare systems, ensuring that all citizens have equal access to medical services. In the U.S., the absence of a comprehensive healthcare system leaves millions without adequate coverage, leading to disparities in health outcomes. A move towards free healthcare would address these inequities and contribute to the overall well-being of the population.
      Preventive Care and Public Health:
Free healthcare systems emphasize preventive care, reducing the burden of chronic diseases and promoting overall public health. By offering affordable healthcare services, countries like Sweden and Germany have effectively managed health risks and achieved better health outcomes. In the U.S., a shift towards free healthcare could prioritize preventive measures, reducing the strain on emergency services and improving the overall health of the population.
      Reducing Financial Barriers to Education:
Countries such as Norway, Denmark, and Germany have recognized the societal benefits of providing free higher education. In America, the rising cost of college tuition has led to a significant burden of student loan debt, limiting access to education for many individuals. Introducing free college education would break down financial barriers, ensuring that education remains an equalizer and a pathway to economic mobility.
      Global Economic Competitiveness:
Nations with robust social systems, including free healthcare and education, often boast higher levels of innovation and competitiveness. For instance, Germany's dual education system has contributed to a skilled workforce and economic success. By investing in education and healthcare, the U.S. can foster a more competitive and resilient society, preparing its citizens for the challenges of a rapidly evolving global economy.
      Social Cohesion and Equality:
Universal healthcare and education foster social cohesion and reduce socioeconomic inequalities. Countries like Sweden and Finland consistently rank high in measures of social equality. In the U.S., adopting similar policies would contribute to building a more inclusive society, where access to healthcare and education is not determined by one's financial status.
      Conclusion:
The experiences of various countries around the world demonstrate that free healthcare and college education are viable and beneficial options for societies. By embracing these models, the United States has the opportunity to prioritize the well-being and future prospects of its citizens. Implementing comprehensive healthcare and education policies would not only address existing disparities but also contribute to the nation's long-term prosperity and global competitiveness. The time has come for America to learn from successful international examples and take bold steps towards securing the health and education of its people.

We’d get hit with a bunch of OT around holidays like Memorial Day, so we’d lose some people, and because we’d be down a few people we’d have even more mandatory OT for the 4th of July resulting in more people to quit. It’s a self perpetuating cycle of being understaffed in a way. The supervisors were pretty chill, they’d let you move around your days off for family events or if you wanted to see a concert or something, I’ve switched my days off like 3 times, and they were all approved. I haven’t heard of them not approving a switch. Also if you’re going though stuff at home (stuff that doesn’t qualify for bereavement as that’s a separate thing) they would let you go home early or take a day or two off if you ask for it.

She tried to give me a compliment sandwich saying I was lazy but I was always punctual (most of the cashiers I worked with would use every excuse in the book to avoid coming in and working the register) which is why they didn't want to let me go because they needed people who were reliable and always came to work but I needed to work on how I spoke to people even if they were rude to me first. Then she wrapped it up by saying, "Okay, I'll see you tomorrow." I went home and resigned. Bitch you won't be seeing me tomorrow or any other day. Lmao fuck you and fuck this job.

It‘s the biggest red flag during a job interview, but most learn it the hard way. Blunt truth is, you go for the job because you need the work experience and the money. No work experience, no job, so where do you start without having any? From scratch…And knowing how to act during a job interview is also a matter of experience, some people just don‘t have the courage to be bold and standing their ground right from the start, wasn‘t any different with me. Getting a raise on your wages is also a matter of confidence, it‘s not necessarily the most productive ones, who succeed, mostly the ones, who are good at self marketing.

The moment I was fired from one of my jobs I knew I wasn't gonna continue doing that. Because how do you expect me to give you 2 weeks notice to find a replacement yet don't give me 2 weeks notice to find a new job?! Also they would say that "I wouldn't be able to find work if I just quit a job" that was clearly another lie. I've quit many jobs for various reasons and I have 2 careers under my belt that I can do anywhere at anytime. Never have I ever been hurt for work. Jordan speaks the truth, we got a new owner at my job and he was a total ass and didn’t pay us for 3 weeks(two pay periods). Some college students had to have their parents pay for their rent and tuition cause they didn’t have the moneyWe had messaged him asking when we’d get paid and some people didn’t have payroll set up yet with the new system and he wouldn’t respond to their messages about it. He blamed us for not making enough money at the store and tried to change the hours all weird so that literally none of us students could even work till the weekend. He also was going to make it so we’d work alone(that’s a safety issue, what if something happened). So we all said screw it and quit, not even a two weeks notice. He lost 14 employees in 48 hours and the stores probably gonna shut down now. Honestly I should feel bad but I just don’t care, he should’ve taken accountability for his actions instead of blaming us for all his problems. The worst part is he’s the franchise owner, like he owns the entire corporation and he’s an ass

*Becomes idiot door dasher the next week who acts like they've never shopped before*.
The amount of door dashers who demand I do THEIR job because they're too stupid to follow simple directions and too lazy to use their eyeballs and legs is infuriating. I don't get paid to do anyone else's job. Just my own. Meanwhile ole Rodney and Moesha get to come and go as they please. They don't do anything at work at all. Not even the minimal tasks because it "sounds too hard" (apparently reading is "too hard") and then when they choose to be lazy and do nothing they bitch and moan that they're bored! These kids are equally, if not more, ridiculously over demanding than the bosses they claim ask "too much" from them. They want a minimum of $20 just to show up and sit on their asses playing on their phones and being rude af to everyone for interrupting their Instagram scrolling. They push any and all labor onto other people and act like having a job is equivalent to slavery while wanting OTHERS to serve them (for free) everywhere they go.
All these people quitting are NOW crying that they want cashiers back because they're too dumb and lazy to know how to work a self checkout. So they get attitudes with the companies and employees who actually bother showing up like "Why don't you ring me up!?" Because, KAREN, these people are assigned to self checkout to help you, not ring you up. And even if they were allowed to ring you up I doubt they'd do it anyway since some have the same "quiet quitting" attitude. If nothing gets done then people won't be able to get the products and services they need because people want to be spiteful. "No I just want to be paid fairly!"
$15-$20+ an hour to sit on your ass and do nothing ISN'T fair pay. It isn't fair to those of us who have all the work dumped on us by lazy morons who think simple tasks are "too hard". If the workload were to be spread evenly between people who actually WORK then we'd all be getting fairly paid.

Worked at a mall Starbucks for over 7 years. The last two of those my dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer and we had terrifying er visits after a surgical procedure went septic and I called out. The district manager was new (and hated because she was a horrible person) and our new store manager was friends with the regional mgr..half our crew had walked out the first week we had mgmt changes because both new bosses were horrible an treated us like shit...mind you the majority of us had been at this store for YEARS.
After my call out I let them know I would be back asap. I literally was 5 min late because I was coming back from a hospital visit and was pulled into the back and fired
They were aware of my situation and said it was because I had a call out without more than 4 hours notice (the er day), I missed work even with ample notice and was late in a month period.
My dad was literally dying and I had a perfect record in the seven years I was there.
I literally walked across the way and got a job at auntie Anne's IN LESS THAN 15 MIN AFTER I WAS FIRED. The Auntie Anne's mgr was like we as you working, you are always doing a great job you can work here if you want...I was in my new uniform and facing my old work which was 15 away and straight across. The look on the Starbucks mangers faces when they saw me working right across the way, right in the field of vision was hilarious and iconic 😆

Been like that forever. Back in the 80s, my sister was in critical condition in the hospital. My mom wanted two weeks off to stay by her as she recovered. Her boss told her, "You gotta pick: your family, or this job." She replied without hesitation, "I will ALWAYS pick my family," quit on the spot, and walked out of the store.
This apparently was NOT what the manager thought she would pick, and she kept calling my mom, warning her not to make such a foolish mistake. Like, she truly was stunned that someone wouldn't pick their career (as much as a junior manager at Target is a "career") over their child's well-being.
Nothing is wrong with this generation. They simply aren't stupid enough to think they NEED to put up with it. Owners and managers are just as crappy as they've always been, but Millennial employees are too fed up to care anymore. It doesn't even take being told "choose between your family or this job." They don't need THAT drastic of a sign that the manager truly doesn't give a damn about them. Anything will do to make them quit and go where they are appreciated. The system needs to change, not the workers.
(Side note: The best part of that story is that my mom was the only person in the whole store who knew how some of the machines at the snack bar worked. She would come in at 5AM to get it set up, even on her days off, because she knew the kids loved the popcorn and hot dogs, and she loved making kids happy. So when she quit, no one had a clue how to make popcorn. Even the district manager called her, begging her to train a replacement. My mom said, "Y'all can wait, I'm with my daughter now." So the store had to close down their snack bar, losing hundreds in profit every day, until my mom decided to return. She was rehired, demanding double her last wages, and she taught someone how the soda machines, popcorn, hot dog warmer, and churro maker all worked. Last she heard, that person was also treated like crap, quit suddenly, she wasn't as cooperative as my mom about staying to train a replacement, so Corporate had to send someone out there. This time, the store manager was fired by the district manager, who had really liked my mom. Mom told me years later, the store manager had not wanted to hire her back, but the DM demanded it, threatening that if they didn't agree to all of my mom's demands for returning, they would hire my mother as the new store manager. My mom was amused, but said she would've refused such a position, as she wanted to spend more time at home.)

Department stores were never meant to have life long employees. This phenomena only started around the late 80's when things were good. People need to get back into the mindset of always stepping up the ladder and not settling. So many well paying actual careers out there need people. Nurses, engineers, almost every aspect of construction, road work, trucking (both dispatching and driving), all sorts of jobs that need degrees and a lot that don't. I always tell people to get the hell out of department stores, we need less of them anyway.

      2 problems with that.
1: People often need a lot of time to find those jobs. Time you don't have if you're working one of the minimum wage jobs for a living. Or they lack time to get a degree.
2: There aren't enough of those jobs to go around. Plus for every engineering or nursing job that pays a livable wage, there's another 2 that underpay. And you can't just say "Go to the ones that do", cause a majority of people need that cash now.
It isn't about changing the mindset to "move uo the ladder", which has been knocked down. No, it's about forcing the system we're in to enable easier access to livable wages. Improving education is part of that, cause there are a depressing number of public schools that don't teach up to code. And part of THAT is teachers universally getting underpaid. We've got a problem from the roots.

@@clayxros576 you also only concentrated on the jobs I mentioned that require college. You're helping back the mindset I'm trying to fix. Steps are steps, not leaps. Obviously you don't go from working a minimum wage job at some shitty super store, to getting a 6 year degree to become a nurse. However, getting a CDL is a lot quicker, a lot easier, and a local route still nets at a minimum around $28 an hour, and a max of around $38. You can also take 2-4 hour night courses for most of the jobs that require anything less than a degree.
Edit: also, most courses from a tech school (also night available) will net jobs that pay on average 25-35 an hour. Sometimes more depending on what speciality.

      @clayxros576 Před rokem +15

      @Dizz the Nibbler
Your point about a CDL is valid, however the hours the DMV are open isn't always conducive to getting a CDL in their off time. I know cause I've done it, plus the studying required amd the delay in retesting. Oh, you also need a Letter of Intent from someone who is likely an employer. How is someone stuck in a dead end job struggling to make rent meant to obtain that letter, one of which is required for each test attempt? Legitimate question.
As for night school, you forgot my point about time. Folks working department stores for a living usually work overtime or a second job just to pay the bills. Little to no savings is common. How would you suggest they fit study time into that when they still need to sleep? Cutting out that second job isn't an option for many.

I got fired from my career because my boss decided right before my drawn out 1.5 year probation period was up I wasn't a good fit. After doing the job for a year and a half. Immediately after, she stuck her buddy in my position. I've been looking for work and my two experiences so far have been a grocery store that made me wait half an hour at a checkout for someone to come get me for my interview & told me I needed to come back to ask about the status of the application and not call because "we just like that and it shows initiative". Second one ONLY wanted me to interview that day, before 5pm, so within hours, and if I wasn't available, they'll "keep me on a list". Jobs these days demand your literal life and 100% commitment for minimum wage. On top of that, only about 25% of places I've encountered are actually hiring full time because their cheap asses don't want to pay benefits. I know I'm going to have to take a pay cut from $26 an hour to minimum wage. Cherry on top is my car took a shit on me, so I have to try to find work in my 25k population town, rather than drive 40 min to my closest big city for work.
It is so disheartening. I understand why people make a living of unemployment. I am 26, I went to college right after high school, worked multiple jobs the whole time, graduated with my bachelor's. I got good grades, was on the deans list, honor roll, etc. I did everything by the book, worked hard and stayed focused with the hope that I was setting myself up for success. My husband worked at UPS for 2 years. UPS treats their employees like sh*t. Because they are unionized, the management (who is not unionized), harasses the drivers constantly. My husband was pulled into the managers office weekly for “violations” like being late…like 2 minutes late, not delivering packages fast enough (though they tell drivers in training, safety is more important than speed). He had a good relationship with the people he delivered too, so he would chat with them for a few minutes. Management follows drivers around to make sure they are “safe” (it’s BS because it isn’t about safety, it’s about trying to catch them not being fast enough. He never knew when he was getting home, and he had 0 work life balance.
The union always protected him, but management would try to make him feel like sh*t by telling him, “well we pay you good, so you just need to put up with it”. I’ll never forget the day he put in his two week notice…management acted shocked. Doesn’t matter how much you pay, being harassed and never having a home life isn’t worth the money.

I asked "Why you still work here???" Them, "Pension." One guy who's 10 years from retirement as a package handler / wash team did 70 hours peak 1 week, made ~$1300, cos of OT. Y'a need thick skin and a will outside that dump to make it. Certainly pays well, or did, before union talk / potential strike Aug 2023; but personally, I'm glad a place like UPS is never gonna be in heaven w/ God. The non unionized management aren't treated any better. They will give you one position , which you are being paid for, then assign you work from another position they don't want to have to pay anyone to do. So, you're doing two or three jobs, working 12 to 15 hours a day. You don't get paid extra for those extra hours. FMLA, is a battle to get so you can't take care of your ill spouse. Upper level management talks to you like s#*t and you can't complain because you AREN'T UNIONIZED. Meanwhile we've seen unionized workers not show up for a month, without calling in, get a letter for employment termination, show back up to work the next week, start working again and kept their job because they said they didn't get the termination letter. That happened often. Management would be gone if they did this crap.
But, here's the thing, no employer, no business cares about you. Only the bottom line. The managers are getting brought into offices and yelled at by their managers, then they bring their supervisors in and it trickles down.
You'd be hard pressed to find any business that treats their employees well. It may not be right but it's the way it is.

Thank GOD someone said this. When I was young and dumb I hired on at Wal-Mart. They were setting up a new SuperCenter. They sent this guy from regional to tell us how he started as a People Greeter and is now regional manager! Whee!!! I hired in as a cashier but was helping out in GM receiving. I learned the hand computer in a day (no iPads back then!) and was up and scanning in new goods. I was so good that when UPC/Invoice became swamped I got sent in to help because they knew I’d learn the fastest. I became a filing BEAST. So, Store open day and I start working the register. I decided that I wanted to be a CSM so I asked a CSM the best way to get there. They said to learn every outlying register so I learned Service desk first. Learned that well enough after two hours that everyone but me could go to lunch. I was KILLING it! Couldn’t get a chance to learn jewelry, electronics, lawn and garden or sporting goods and I was getting frustrated. I’d been there a year, had a sterling reputation and was a hard worker. A friend told me that if I went to overnights I’d learn all the CSM codes and could learn the outlying registers as I closed them out for the night and I’d make a whole 50 cents extra per hour, too! OH BOY! So, learned the CSM codes in about 3 nights. Still wasn’t being taught outlying registers. Then, they began taking me off the registers to watch the front for the overnight people greeter. Okay. Losing hope. Then, a light! One of the ladies I’d worked with in UPC/Invoice was retiring! I told her I was angling for the job and she put in a good word for me. Weeks passed. No news. Finally I found out I hadn’t been hired and the person they HAD hired was from the deli and knew not the foggiest of what UPC/Invoice entailed. To add insult to injury they put ‘me on the doors every night and found a bullshit reason to try and fire me. They wouldn’t, though, if I wrote a 1000 word essay explaining why they shouldn’t. I walked out with a middle finger in the air. Trust no bitch, especially when they say they “prefer to hire from within” and like employees who are “motivated to move up in the company”.

I used to work in a medical facility running the outpatient laboratory. I was efficient. So management gave me more tasks that I really was not qualified for. When I brought up either receiving a raise or slimming down my responsibilities the undertone of management's response was "if you aren't willing to do all of these duties we will find somebody who will." This same employer refused to give perfect marks on evaluation because there's "always room for improvement".
I grew up with my parents telling me that as far as work is concerned, everybody is expendable.
