The Bechdel test in that episode was one of the most hilarious things I’ve seen on this show. I like how poorly written Summer and Beth are in that scene while passing the test anyway.
My favourite bit was 'I'm that supreme court lady'.
Weren't they just acting out on behalf of the story teller not being able to tell a good story hence why they acted somewhat robotic?
striklylow yeah... part of what makes that big hilarious is that Morty is a teenage boy who doesn’t know enough about the female perspective to tell a story that passes the bechdel test and is also a good story.
I’m not sure if the point was for it to show how awful a tone death story written by a male writer with zero perspective on women can be when it passes the test, but it definitely showed that point trying to not.
Pretty sure, based on what Harmon said, that the point (like most of the tropes about good writing techniques and guides in the episode) was to show you can follow a guideline and get the polar opposite results of what the guideline is intended for. But that’s just my speculation.
Either way I find the bechdel test part personally hilarious because I’m a guy who’s writing a book with a female lead and have had to revise it several times because as a dude I lack the proper perspective to write a good female character without occasional unintentionally writing something horribly tone death.
One time I showed a few chapters of the book to my friend Kelsey and her response was pointing out a few scenes where the main character is acting like a well meaning but oblivious guy thinks a girl in those situations might react and not how girls would actually react.
E.g. there’s a scene where Ciel (the main character, who grows up to be a drug kingpin and expert at laundering... basically she becomes Gus Fringe I’m breaking bad, bad at least I have the comfort of knowing I had that idea before breaking bad was even a thing... yeah, I write slow) goes into a bar to trick the town drug dealer (it’s a small town) who sells to all the kids in her school into thinking he can smash but instead luring him into a trap where she steals his supply and gets him arrested.
The original part of that scene was extremely cringy and has been rewritten and revised a good 15 times at this point.
Same with the first few scenes of her in high school. But at least the initial focus I don’t feel needs to change too much. On her first day of school she over hears some douchey varsity football player (who’s actually just an extreme exaggeration of my over confident teammate from the football team in high school.) brag to his buddies about how he’s gonna tap that (her) and she immediately hates him. In the first draft of the story after that initial interaction she unrealistically starts to plot his demise and how to ruin his life... instead of, you know, just writing him off as a tool and going about her day.
In the later revisions, she’s shown long before that to be growing into the cold calculating drug kingpin she becomes later in the book and doesn’t initially despise him as much as make an immediate assessment about how she can use him (and others she runs into during the day) to further her goals. Like a chess piece. A horny teenaged chess piece she can easily direct and manipulate.
But the later revisions also show he’s not the only person she immediately starts thinking of as a chess piece. Each person she uses she more or less has a different form of control over them to get them to do what she wants.

EDIT: To future historians, the person I replied to got angry in another comment he made about how he hated the episode. I think he said he disliked where the show was going, but I can't remember since he deleted his comments after getting angry.

I want some actual plot with evil Morty. He was a big thing in the trailer, so I feel like there needs to be something involving him that is actually canon. The cameo in this episode was nice, but if that's it, I'll be disappointed.

Ah yes, how to solve the obligation to explain whats with Evil Morty and such: Just throw all the important stuff that was supposed to happen eventually into a weird meta episode as illusions and call it a day.
1. There is no obligation for the writers to explain what's with evil Morty. That story could be finished for all we know.
2. Evil Morty being depicted in this episode does not mean he can't appear in future stories.

I loved this episode. It was hilarious and smart. I loved the mind-bending, fourth wall-breaking, meta-narrative stuff. I thought the subversion of fan-expectations about the evil morty plot was hilarious even though I'm just as eager for narrative fulfilment as everyone else. My favourite episodes of Rick and Morty are the ones that wrinkle my brain and this is right up there with the best of them for me.

Between being the literal Savior of the episode and - generated character or not - being able to break out of the “Story Cycle” that Rick couldn’t just by calling out to a “Father” (meta-joke notwithstanding) is probably the most generous Christian fanservice you can get from an overtly nihilistic show. Add to that all the times Rick references Jesus and God - the out-of-character ones on top of the usual atheism - and you actually wonder if he’s at least partly in denial. Then again, Dan Harmon DID bring us Community’s Shirley Bennet so at the very least, he was never going to be the kind of creator who’s ONLY about taking cheap shots about Religion and the religious.
