  • I love Martin guitars and always will but I’m not very impressed with these yet. Once I get one of these in my hands I will have a lot better idea of the quality and sound. What do you guys think of these new additions to the Martin line up?

The Taylor sounds better but martin plays easier.

    Hello Mr. Hoff,
I thought that this new design was radically different for Martin. About three years ago I got rid of my only Martin and, instead, got 2 Taylors (a 6 & a 12). I realized how much I missed my Martin. While my Taylors are great and all, the sound of my Martin was (back then) and still is more to my taste. It's hard to put this into words. So, when I saw this SC-13e I was inspired to take a chance on purchasing one. Now that I've had one for about 4 months, I can comment on the pros (of which there are many) and the cons. For the most part the hundreds of CZcams reviews have covered most of my likes. So, I'll mention the negatives. Well, you hit the nail on the head with respect to the cost. I too think that it's too pricey. I didn't get the Special so the pick up is a little different to work with. I have gotten so used to my other Acoustics having the ability to adjust the Bass, Mid, and Treble. But this Martin doesn't have that - Just Bass and Treble. The strings that came with the guitar didn't last very long. I put some Elixr strings and they sound a bit better and have lasted 6+ weeks B4 The low E string lost all its sustain. So far though, I love my new Martin. Anyway, thanks for your review. It's great that there is an honest review among all the sales-pitch reviews out there.

Thanks for sharing the negative side of this guitar! I thinks it’s just as important to know weakness as strength to get the best gear possible for the situation.

Yeah, I believe you get a good product with the new technology and on the same token, it helps the luthier put less elbow grease on each one, and so producing in mass production the price should be lower so its easier for us to obtain them and buy more. That was Mr Fords idea on his mass production of cars.

If you check out the sound samples of this guitar posted on CZcams (Maury's Music) of the SC-13e vs the SC-13e Special, the Fishman pickup in the SC-13e sounds considerably better than the LR Baggs pickup in the SC-13e Special. The non-special also sounds better to my ears when not plugged in.

I wonder if you know how to make say an epiphone dr-100 be more playable in some sort of upgrade in a certain bridge or other component or a secret to cause the strings to be easier to play and more bendable?

I would start by adjusting the truss rod to give it the proper relief. There are a lot of good videos of that so I don’t have one in particular to recommend. Also, sometimes from the factory the saddle and nut are to tall but both can be sanded/filed to the right height without damaging your guitar. I know graphtech makes great nuts and saddles that would probably make the tone even better to! Top that off with some light elixir strings and you should be set!

Hoff guitars has given great advice on graphtech products. It’s really pretty easy to remove the saddle and carefully sand it down to the right height for better string action along with adjusting the truss rod in small increments to get an acoustic more enjoyable to play. Like you said there’s plenty of videos for that. Just watch through some until you find someone you like

I’m probably in the minority but I am not a fan of Koa as a tone wood. I think it is really beautiful though, I much prefer mahogany.

The Koa guitars I have played where enjoyable but I really like rosewood and mahogany too!

Also I agree on the pricing for these. The 10E is somewhat affordable but all the other models are too high. The Taylor 214 Koa models are creeping up in price to where they are higher than what I paid for a 314 about 6 years ago. I own a 000-15 Streetmaster and it is really great!
