On February 13, 2006, word was getting around (literally) that a supposed screenshot of Apple's upcoming Mac OS X Leopard had leaked through the instant messaging program iChat. However, those who opened the attached "latestpics.jpg" were not met with images. They were met with trouble.
What initially seemed like your typical, somewhat interesting Mac rumor, ended up becoming a story that hit the news. The Apple Mac had just experienced what was considered its first ever computer virus, a worm nicknamed Leap.A (Oompa Loompa), and now this "safe" PC community was at a crossroads.

I had a very casual relationship with my digital illustration prof in art school at the height of the Mac vs. PC ad campaign. I primarily worked digitally and was a custom built PC user. 100% of the labs at the school were Mac, and I HATED them.
I got into a Mac vs. PC conversation with that prof one day, and he went on about how Macs were just easier to use, blah blah, the normal talking points.
"Yeah and you're paying out the nose for a fancy aluminum box with an apple on it with inferior hardware inside of it. I'll keep my PC that's three times stronger that I built for less than half the cost of those Macs, thanks."
"But Macs are so much easier to use with zero maintenance and no having to worry about viruses. PCs have so much shit you have to do to keep them running well."
"Antivirus software and setting your hard drive to defrag once every couple months isn't a monumental task."
"But it's still shit you have to do."
"Well yeah, but even your car will break down and stop running if you don't change the oil every so often."
    "..............goddammit."
    I won that one.
Edited to add: Y'all can "hur-derp r/thathappened" about this silly little exchange all you want; it happened regardless. I don't know what on earth there would be to gain from lying about something so inconsequential when it's not even funny or around other people. We were in the parking lot between classes.

The only reason it does not get viruses is because not a lot of folks use it overall. The learning gap between Linux and most other oses, despite possibly being actually very small, is impossible for the average user of computers, same type to fall for scams and shit like that. This leads to devs for viruses not existing, and even if they did, they would face tougher people they would have to trick, since, while they may not be smart still, average Linux user is about.... 0.1% smarter than the average pc/Mac user at the very least. And I can say this as a Linux user myself! Infact, if Linux use becomes easier (IE:pre-installed in some way and just more apps can be used in it.) Then, viruses will start to properly appear, since it's taking a bit of the pie now, and thus getting to the general public who might not even know what the fuck a wifi is.

Earlier versions of OS X seemed to be an attempt by Apple engineers to get a Mac experience on NextStep in a hurry, even if it meant bypassing the security features. I remember hearing about inbuilt apps that were made to run as setuid root, automatically changing the permissions of any files they touched, so ordinary user tasks would fail. If I remember correctly, even the Apple menu was running as setuid root and could be convinced to launch apps with the same root permissions!
Fortunately it seems that Apple has fixed a lot of that kind of stuff over the years, but I do still wonder whether there are egregious security problems still residing in the underlying system courtesy of a hurried 1990s Apple coder...

@@otherlego I think you may be confused, current versions of MacOS (and OS X) were built on the NextStep operating system (loosely), the operating system that was developed by NextStep, which Steve Jobs ran after he was fired from apple. What 3rdalbum is saying, is that while making NextStep more MacOS like, some things were rushed, and they fear that some of it might remain.

    • @3rdalbum

As for the permissions problems, Apple shipped with Mac OS X a utility that would repair any messed-up permissions on system files. It's hard to see how permissions would get messed-up if the security system was working correctly - I've never had any equivalent problem on Linux unless I caused it myself.
I doubt it's as much of a problem on OS X as it used to be. I'm sure it's not. Apple has done a lot of work on securing the operating system through better design.

I’ve never heard of Leap, but I’ve heard of other Mac malware.
Mac malware usually doesn’t have a ton of analysis or information about how it works, so Mac malware is still fairly obscure, however, it is still foolish to not have anti-malware software on your Mac and take proper precautions.
I’ve been a Mac user for over a decade, and I do weekly backups to an offline external hard drive and have anti-malware protection.
I also practice good computer security habits, like not executing a file if I am unsure of its source.

I remember that when I was using windows, I formatted it all the time, not because of viruses, because it becomes slow and full of errors over time.

It’s actually funny how easy it would’ve been to write this virus, probably some high schooler wrote it. Usually an inevitability when you are young and start learning scripting and automation, you start with bulk copying and moving, then renaming, then you get curious if you can mess up you friends files by bulk renaming them. Then you move on to trying out things on the school LAN. I used to mess around at random internet cafes back then when internet wasn’t easily accessible.
Whom ever it is, is probably sitting back laughing at all this while his wife makes dinner and kids playing. Probably has a small and steady SAAS company. Just a shot in the dark

Can you share this file with me? I really want to try it out (i have knowledge about macs and pc's and knows how to safely open up virusses, if that even is a thing :p )

Yeah, Mac user here, not all of us are stupid enough to think we can’t get viruses.
macOS is inherently more secure as it requires authentication from the user to install any software and apps can’t access system level control without direct modification to settings from the user. but you still can’t just go around downloading every .app file you find on the pirate bay.

OSX had some issues, especially in the beginning as other commenters have noted, and yes it's obscurity helped it..however being a Unix system meant that you still had safe guards like password prompts, this is a far cry from the world of windows where you could have a Trojan install in the background without even knowing it
