On Christmas Day of 2009, the largest channels on CZcams were hit with a strange online prank. Several of their video thumbnails were replaced with random photos, ranging from musicians to snapshots of cartoon characters. Those responsible for the hack remain a mystery today, and how the hack was executed has yet to become conclusive.
What circumstances could have possibly caused such a strange incident to occur, and why has the story itself remained in hiding for over a decade?

If CZcams gets hacked again, I'd want that hacker to reverse any bad decisions the company added to the site.

The last âhackâ I remember was early 2010s July 4th. When people realized CZcams comments didnât filter out html content in posts.

I just want to say that I really appreciate the extra effort you put in to ensure that readable and well made subtitles are on your videos. While I'm not deaf, I do have an audio processing disorder and I'm glad I can enjoy your videos properly :) really amazing video as always btw!
I'd never heard of an auditory processing disorder before, that's really interesting. Is it like dyslexia but for your ears, like the information just gets jumbled in your head?

and also when it comes to other stuff like people talking and such, without subtitles or any visual cue to show what they are saying, it ends up sounding as if they are mumbling, despite that clearly not being the case
but this is pretty much how i view it based on experience, op might have a different opinion than mine
@@Th3Raz96 Iâm someone who has a sensory processing disorder as well (it affects all my senses in the some way) and, while not as severe as it could be, still messes with my life. For me, sound can sometimes be awful; making the world jarring and making the world difficult to be in.
Last night I had a particularly rough time getting to fall asleep because every little noise was loud, painful and made me jump out of my skin. Some point, most of the noises stopped making sense and started humbling together in an angry loud pile.

I consider them the catalyst for a lot of modern meme culture. They arent as popular as before but theres some YTPers still around. The community is more niche now I think but the impact it had on the internet is tremendous
People been memeing since the 90s. YTPs though, are basically ultra complex edits compared to most contemporary or past memed
TF2 has their own variant of YTP which is nice.

I suppose it was only an IDOR vulnerability, meaning the hackers were able to only change peoples thumbnails. This same happen to Instagram a few months back, when peoples Instagram thumbnails of videos and pictures started saying "hacked".

Bro you have no idea how glad I am that you don't villify people on your channel. Like that's the thing I hate most about modern CZcams is how quickly people get caught up in the hate and shame train. It's just really refreshing to see someone just not do that. Thank you.
It makes me sad that I never got to experience old CZcams. The only place where I could access the internet back in those days was at my school's computer lab, and they had the site blocked. I could play flash games though so at least I had that.
I want to say something, I am always super impressed how your videos seem to depict things as if from their era, and I don't know how you do it at all. Like so much footage in this was of the old CZcams layout, the videos, the numbers, stats, thumbnails, everything and I don't know if it's some extremely clever editing or something else I don't know about entirely.
..except that part where it zooms into the IE window buttons and you can see it says download for linux

mostly music,
but sometimes it would fail and save html,
when I went through the files on my old computer I found these copies,
it was a wonderful 10 minutes of nostalgia.

I sadly don't have any memories of this event, but the names and imagery in this video still gave me a nostalgia rush for what I consider to be CZcams's golden age. As a dirt poor college kid at the time, I was an active member in the CZcams Poop community, happily watched various movies that users would upload in low image quality segments (and if I liked the movie well enough, I would seek out a legit physical copy).

Definitely wasn't expecting to see a video covering this topic, let alone be mentioned in it, haha!
It definitely made a big stir at the time, and I recall specifically asking the person who was behind all this to change the thumbnails of some videos on my channel. Mostly as a way to validate that this was indeed the person behind the hack. Sure enough, moments later, they were changed, and I've kept them as they are to this day.
I remember testing a bunch of stuff out to see if I could figure out the exploit as well, in retrospect I think it must have been some form of authentication bypass specifically for the part of CZcams that handles partner thumbnail uploading. Essentially uploading a new thumbnail for one of your existing videos, but managing to provide the ID of another video somewhere in the process. If the hack would have provided full account access, I'm certain it would have resulted in far more than just thumbnails being changed. Never managed to figure it out, but it was still mindblowing to see something like that happening in real-time.
Thanks for preserving and documenting this niche internet event for future generations, really. Old CZcams was such a different experience, something that would be lost to time if it weren't for videos like this one.

I used to watch clips from my favorite movies (Ice Age Dawn of the Dinosaurs, Chicken Run, Land Before Time... y'know, the greats) at my school's computer lab back in 4th and 5th grade...

Seeing that old CZcams layout (used to have a channel in 2007) takes me back. Back when CZcams shorts didn't exist, and money hungry ads and sponsorships didn't take over. Good times, good times.
And I remember that time. My old channel and CZcams Poop videos were affected, and it really freaked me out. Not knowing what was going on.
Funnily enough I actually remember this. I would've forgotten this over time if it wasn't for this, but there's still a video I know on CZcams that still uses one of the thumbnails when the website was hacked. It's called "One More Final: I Need You(tube Poop)" by WalrusGuy. Over 10 years later, and the thumbnail was just never changed.
I vividly remember being a WalrusGuy fan and wondering why the thumbnail for One More Final: I Need You(tube Poop) changed. I'm not sure about the other changes, it's very vague. I didn't realize it was an actual event that affected several other channels until EmpLemon made his video documenting it in 2018

I miss old CZcams. I made my first channel in Jan 2007 (I just turned 11 in Sep 2006) and IMO, 2007-2010 was CZcams's golden age.

I miss being able to watch movies for free as a bunch of clips strung together in a playlist. There was this one of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew that I used to watch all the time, but I think it eventually got taken down.

I miss old CZcams, back when people "could" put Copyrighted music in their videos with no issues. Now you basically have to risk a Strike or Demonetization trying to be funny or cool.

Wow oh wow! This unlocked a core memory for me! Iâve always wondered why so many people donât seem to remember or care about this. I remember just waking up one day and seeing random ass thumbnails on videos.
In fact, Iâm pretty sure this was _before_ CZcams allowed creators to use custom thumbnails. So to make thumbnails, creators would have to flash a static image somewhere in their video for the intention to use as that videoâs icon.
So I remember how odd it was seeing an unrelated imagine in the thumbnail! But honestly, my young feeble mind wouldâve been impressed by anything at the time.
I really miss this time of CZcams and the internet seemed so much more fun

It probably worked similarly to how the MySpace worm was created where CZcams was using the .innerHTML property and in some text box likely maybe the description text area tag they put a JavaScript script tag in it to randomly turn thumbnails into those photos

I remember this, the photo of the musician was from a 4chan thread the hacker was running; it was the typical âpost ending in X decides the photoâ. That same thread is where the other images came from.
CZcams poops back in days were gold, now with CZcams terms and all that, most poops don't seem to have that same affect they did a couple years ago.
