You see, the high school "cool guy," portrayed by Shane Gillis, didn't realize how immensely successful Forrest Gump had been in his life after high school. He asked, in an incredulous fashion, "Forrest? What's he been up to?" The response, "Actually, a lot," was funny, if you're familiar with the fictional character, Forrest Gump. Forrest had acomplished a tremendous amount after high school, beyond most folks' dreams, therefore the joke lands perfectly.

A purple heart is almost a participation trophy, especially in Vietnam

Shane Gillis is a stand up guy. He got fired from snl before he ever got a scene because some busy body media type got upitty on a dumb joke about Asians he made.
And still decides to host when he currently shooting up like a comedian rocket.
They need to bring real comedians onto the show. Did they replace the usual liberal woke writers because those episode was actually funny without resorting to Alec Baldwin as Trump. Was funny the first couple of times. How about lampooning Biden for once. Or are we too afraid to?

Nobody claimed it was real, mudge002able just pointed out that the character got another award for his service in the movie. When SGT Forrest Gump receives his LOD (Letter of Discharge), he is only wearing five ribbons - Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and the Republic of Vietnam Medal, but is missing the ribbon device for the Medal of Honor for which he was awarded by President. He was injured in Vietnam in the film so he got a Purple Heart.
