- This video belongs to a series designed to explain how to train and educate a horse by following natural horsemanship principles.
Full circles and half circles are the continuation of lungeing, they teach the horse to untrack correctly his hindquarters.

I've seen some trainers use a fence, or wall, to start teaching the half circle. I'm curious to hear your thoughts on this.
Thank you

Hi Laurie, good question indeed.
There is nothing wrong using a fence or a wall. Everything depends on your motivation: do you want your horse to be trained? Or do you want your horse to be educated?
Training a horse consists in repetitions to induce automatic responses. Basically, this techniques imply that the horse just gets used to our cues and obeys. This is not my way of doing things. I favor education...
Education implies thinking. I want horses to receive my cues and think about what I want. This philosophy gives more time to the horse to connect information, to process it in order to find the right solution. It takes more time than training (at the beginning). But the more you advance in the education, the more you save time, because the horse can then remember what we've done in the past, connect the dots and process more rapidly to find solutions to new problems.
On my mind, if you want to create a real connection with your horse, training is not an option. On the contrary, you want to help your horse be himself. Just like kids! ^^
