    Hi Eric! The key here is to not drag any bubbles underwater. That comes with the catch. We have a few good videos specifically for what you are looking for (find them in our Backstroke Swimming playlist). 1) Hit the water with the pinky finger. 2) Once you master the catch, move your arm a few inches down. 3) Next grab the water with your whole arm but maintaining a high elbow. 4) Last but not least, push it to the hip. Don't forget to rotate shoulders. Good luck and thanks for watching!

    First of all, you have to make sure your head is back and still. This way you don't "sit" in the water but float. Second of all, try to take a breath with your mouth and breath out through your nose. The same with underwater, when you are doing underwater kick and do bubbles through your nose, you create a a pressure and water will never " rush into your air sinuses". Or you can simply try using a nose clip and eliminate the problem. A lot of backstrokers do that. Thanks for watching!

    Keep your head back and still, rotate shoulders, constant kick throughout the whole race with strong underwater kick, count strokes after flags to be confident about your turns, fast tempo. A lot of thing to keep in mind, but if you manage them, you gonna drop some time. Good luck tomorrow and don't forget to leave us a feedback at SwimTechnique(dot)tv after your race!

    I have some questions regarding backstroke, hope you can give me some opinions on these:
    1. My legs tend to sink whenever I try to swim backstroke, in order to keep my legs just right below the surface of the water I have to kick my legs really fast. The downside to this is my legs get tired very easily, and eventually sinks. Any ideas where did I do wrong? Sometimes I try to sneak away with doing few bicycle kicks to crawl my legs up whenever I noticed my legs start to sink, since it is less tiring that way.....
    2. My knees have a tendency to break the surface whenever I try to kick high, to prevent that I press my belly and bum slightly downwards, so my body basically form into a slight 'V' shape so that my knee will be further away from the surface when my feet are kicking high. Is this method recommended?

      Vincent Chua Thanks for you question and watching the video. Here are some pointers that might help:
      1. Lower body might be sinking because there is no support coming from your legs. Proper backstroke kicking requires feet pointing inside and relaxed, keep your knees underwater and don't let them to break the surface. Bicycle kick is a common mistake swimmers do when it comes to backstroke so try to work more on your kicking and strengthen lower body. Proper kick should not make you tired.
      2. The method you described is not quite the best. Just like freestyle swimming, backstroke requires a proper body position in the water and that is streamline. You'd want to move through the water and not to drag your body through the water (which essentially "V" shape does). When we help our students not to break the surface with their knees, we perform the following: a student is doing a backstroke kick while a coach holding a kick board right above the surface where swimmer's knees are. When a swimmer kicks the board he/she know the knees are breaking the surface. This helps them to better control their kicking. This exercise needs to be done close to the edge of the pool so a coach can walk next to a swimmer and hold a kick board right about the knees.
      Last but not least, we wish you best of good luck in learning this stroke. Let us know if we can do something else to make the experience better. Cheers!

    As an aquatic biomechanist & performance coach the only problem which should be highlighted with this demonstration is that the swimmer does not push through enough at the end of the propulsive phase, this is indicated by the fact that he exits the water with his thumb turned upwards. An incomplete propulsive phase can be addressed through drill work. I would be very interested to see videos of what drills you would recommend and regularly perform to correct such stroke errors. Thanks

    I got a off topic question, what are the requirements to get a scholarship to a D1 division college?

    • @SwimTechniqueTV
      @SwimTechniqueTV  Před 9 lety +1

      It depends on the school and whether you want a full ride or just a partial scholarship. If you don't mind us asking, what's your best event?

      Top 8 places at Nationals will give you a full scholarship to pretty much any D1 school. You can look the results from this year's competition on the web. Work hard, follow your dreams and you'll get there!

    what is the difference between 100 metre technique and normal backstroke? How do I choose the best backstroke technique? The following video (Picking the Right Swimming Technique - Freestyle) shows the different freestyle stroke techniques. I want to know the different ones for backstroke????

    • @SwimTechniqueTV
      @SwimTechniqueTV  Před 10 lety +2

      Dear Matt H ,
      Thank you for your question and watching the video. Regarding you questions there are some elements in 100 meter swim that we would like to metion. When swimming 100 Backstroke you'd need to perform a start, underwater dolphin kick, flipturns, and finish. Also it requires endurance and race tactics rather than swimming from wall to wall. Keep in mind that most people start swimming by learning elements first (and that's what or Backstroke swimming technique video demonstrates) and then move on to lap swimming.
      Regerding the different techniques in backstroke: if in freestyle you can use Straight arm vs. High elbow catch freestyle swimming , in backstroke the first option does not work quite well. Hewever, we always recommend to use technique that is more suitable for you and makes you faster. Let us know if you have any further questions!

    Is it necessary to swim underwater in the start can't we like directly come out and start doing the stroke

    • @SwimTechniqueTV
      @SwimTechniqueTV  Před 5 lety

      Not really. You can start swimming right away. However, underwater dolphin kick will help you overcome the distance quicker. Thanks for watching and sorry for a delayed response.

      For me the main thing is the ballance of body position (the pelvis and the legs are too deep compare the shoulders and arms)
      Also shoulder/elbow position and the pushing are bad.
