I saw Warrior in 2012 on HBO and it just blew me away. One of the best family sport stories of all time! That scene with Nick Nolte might be the greatest acting job of all time. It was so heartbreaking I felt sick.

As a guy who has had real issues with my father throughout my life, this movie hit very close to home. There's something that can't be described about the frustration you feel with a father who has supposedly "turned himself around" but who has also never been held responsible for any of the awful things he did in the past.
See, the real problem is that their face doesn't change. So every time you look at them, all you see is the same face of the person who hurt you all those years ago. So you want to do the right thing and forgive them but that means you have to look at them and every time you do, you get memories of the bad stuff coming back again.
And it sucks because it makes you feel like a bad person since they expect you to just get over it but trying to do so only makes you more angry and resentful. So you end up being a 'bad' son because it's just easier.

I kinda understand that cuz I was real angry at the guy that shot and killed my cousin for awhile after he got out. Seeing them around town made me so angry but at the end of the day i was just hurting myself by not letting it go. It wnt be easy but it will be infinitely better to move on then to let anybody control your emotions like that

It’s kind of absurd how these two were sympathizing with Nick Nolte and chastising Tommy talking about how he needs to move on, he should feel bad for making Nick Nolte falling off the wagon, and shaming Tommy the entire movie for harboring resentment. My father is a drug addict and alcoholic who I watched beat my mother as a kid. I lost my little brother to CPS 18 years ago and still don’t know where he is. My dad used to hit me all the time. Last time I saw him was August 18, 2008 and I hit him in the face three times and left for basic training the next day…haven’t seen him since. Their disposition towards shaming Tommy and feeling bad for Nick Nolte drove me nuts because anyone who has ever been through something like that, it is nearly insurmountable and the pain, damage, and psychological issues are life long. What you said was absolutely perfect.

Same my pops used to beat the shit out of me and curse whilst yelling at me. Had me f'd up for a while till I found out that his father treated him even worse. It was the transfer of generational trauma and pain. The resentment went on for years and I couldn't stand his face but we managed to talk man to man and I forgave him. He regretted his actions and genuinely seeked forgiveness. At the end of the day, my relationship with him is strong and I've always appreciated how he took care of his family. Despite his actions, he coached me when I did Taekwondo and everyday I had a warm meal. Its better to forgive, let go and have a good talk with your pops otherwise the memories will always bother you.

    • @lazarobabich6696

the same me. I come from a dysfunctional home, with abusive and violent parents, I grew up suffering abandonment and violence, I harbored hatred towards them for a long time but not anymore because I realized that they made me stronger, more fit. I'm not justifying them, it's just that I decide to extract gold from the trash. Every abuse you suffer in life makes you tougher, it makes you a survivor, it places you several steps higher on the evolutionary ladder, then you stop feeling guilt, shame and self-loathing for what happened to you, you realize that you have "superpowers" then the hatred towards those who hurt you loses strength. Perhaps the message of this movie is that your past shapes you and makes you who you are and if you suffered a lot and survived you become a warrior.

When I got older, and at some point realized I don't hate him anymore, it was like a big chunk of pain was pulled out of my heart, and then it just dissolved in the atmosphere. Forgiveness is not favour for other peole, it's a gift for yourself.

This is such a beautiful film i remember the promotional campaign when it was coming out. They did a whole "What do you fight for," promotion. It is such a beautiful film about all the negative things we hold on to - hate, anger, resentment, guilt, shame - and what it takes for some of us to let go of it all. The ending brings tears every time, right when the music starts i can feel it coming. The look on Brendan's face as he puts his gloves up for the last round. The first cut to Paddy, and he's got this look of like, "Did i bring this on my son's? Did my failure as a father also drive them apart?" And then of course when Brendan is telling Tommy "I'm sorry... Tap Tommy.. It's okay. It's okay. I love you. I love you, Tommy." It's just so powerful 🤍✊

I saw this movie in the theater when it came out and it was amazing. You see how these guys went down different paths in life and it even shows up in their fighting styles. Tommy is all strength and wins quick by knockout. Brendan is technical and wins by submission. In the end they needed to fight it out and deal with their emotions. I love how in the last round we already knew who won but that wasn't what we needed to see. We needed to see Tommy at aside his anger and forgive his brother. The slow music playing while the crowd is roaring is so different from what you'd usually expect but it works great. And seeing the big brother carry his little brother away and protecting him from the crowd as they just both break down crying is amazing.

Warrior was such a great film especially since the marketing wasn't very strong. Nick Nolte was nominated for Best Actor at the Oscars but lost to Christopher Plummer that year. Tom Hardy really gave his role some serious rawness which really polarized his brothers' personality. Very different characters with very similar core values but the film emphasized what happens when people take different paths to deal with their problems. It was awesome to see that Brendan's maturity helped guide Tommy's character arc from resentful and angry to forgiving and understanding. In the end a fantastic message of family and never giving up inside or outside of the ring.

32:16 Bruh, I can't re-watch this film simply because of that scene right there... it felt so real and raw... I felt like it was something I should have not seen, I felt connected and disconnected... like I understand the pain, the sorrow, the feeling but at the same time I went through that and now I am watching (I know it fiction but I can bet you my LIFE there were moments like that, that happened to people in real life including myself.) somebody going through what I went through, but it's not for me to see it's not my life and it brought back some unpleasant memories. But the real reason is that it just felt very realistic to the point where I just wanted to walk out from that room just not see what happening, just close my eyes on it and let him deal with it, it's not my fight. I been through that fight now let them go through it themselves, I hope you know what I mean by this. But this scene, man... it just painful to watch, so well acted by both but especially Nolte, he killed it... I don't remember who won an Academy Award that year but this scene alone deserved him all the awards in my opinion... Tom Hardy was almost equally as good as Nolte (Still good don't get me wrong) but Nolte was revelation and was a stand out in almost every scene he was in this film. This scene always made me cry my eyes out and not many movies make me cry but this one did it.

Honestly I think everyone knows it’s obvious that Brendan took care of Tommy’s military brothers family. Brendan knew what it was like to be down and hopeless fighting for his family so there is zero chance knowing Tommy’s story he didn’t help that family out. He only wanted to keep his house and not go backward. Tuck some away for a rainy day, help out the military family and help out Tommy. 100% that’s what happened. There was no need to show us because we all knew what he would do with it. I think if Tommy won he only gives it to Manny’s family and doesn’t help Brendan so the only happy ending could be if Brendan won.

Random fact...super rare for people to lose consciousness in jiujitsu from a blocked airway. More often than not it's the blockage in the carotid arteries (or even the jugular vein?). That's why people tap so quickly when that shit is sunk in...they're about to go night night.

What is unrealistic and baffling is that this tournament is supposed to be middleweights (185lbs) at a weigh in. There is no conceivable way Kurt Angle would EVER weigh 185 and be remotely competitive and look normal

I think a lot of people overlook this film because your not spoon fed the entire story your only given hints in the dialogue about just how bad things had gotten between them and why all three main actors play their parts with very subdued emotions demanding the audience pay attention. It's easy to see Tommy as a violent rage fueled monster without seeing the pain regret and shame driving his anger or to think Brandon is the nice hardworking guy just trying to survive but he carries just as much anger buried deep down. His determination to keep the house isn't just about providing for his family those things are a symbol of how far he's come from his awful childhood and he fears loosing them will drag him back into the pit of despair Tommy and his father are still struggling to escape.

Look at me! Look at me! Why are we here, Brendan? Why are we here? Are we here to win this fight? You tell me, 'cause if we're not, I'll throw in the towel right now. We'll get Tess and we will go home. You don't knock him out, you lose the fight. Understand me? You don't knock him out, you don't have a home.
This line gets me every time i watch this movie. Amazing movie and great reaction as always.

The only 2 nitpicky things I had with this as an mma fan is the super fancy moves Brendan pulled off that just are basically impossible irl and the fact that the established Tommy as this undefeated wrestler but he didn't grapple at all and could stop his brother from rolling him around super easy. Its always a challenge with mma movies because they want the cool factor for the big screen but it always looks kinda silly to anyone who knows the sport.

A little ironic funny note.. since you briefly mistook that one fighter as Chuck Liddell and thought the fight at the end would have been called after the shoulder injury, UFC fighter Rich Franklin broke his arm in a fight and finished the fight by knock out using his broken arm.. the guy he knocked out was Chuck Liddell.. lol That was awhile back though and this movie is 2011, more than likely current UFC would stop the fight as safety protocols have increased.
