Been a Caps fan since my first hockey game in Landover. Had to wait 42 years for a cup and Ovi gets a huge amount of credit for it because of his drive and determination. The Caps game is usually the one game we go to every year since the Jets came here to become the Coyotes. My three sons and I were upper deck front row right above the net. We didn't know at the time that we had just witnessed what would arguably be the greatest goal ever. What happened IMO was that Mara{D} thought he took him out of the play. So did Boucher{G}. What happened next defines Ovie's style and career. He doesn't quit when it comes to the attack. Everybody in the arena watched the replay on the big screen and had the same reaction. Gretzky's says it all. At first a little bewilderment, and then he shakes his head and gives a little Monalisa smile, priceless. Later in the post game, he was asked for his thoughts on Ovechkin, and he said, "I wish we had him". Barring serious injury, and aside from the figuring for inflation debate, he will beat the all time goals record. I'm not going to debate, but has your guy ever impressed the Great One?

Ovi is to DC what Ray Lewis was to Baltimore. One single force multiplier that singlehandedly creates a culture of contending through their inhuman feats of dominance despite being among the most disrespected and having clear media bias against them. He is the history of the Capitals. Our city loved our team but we had one good year in 98 and just cheered a bunch of bums passionately like Cleveland fans. Ovi made us a city teams feared going to. He hit the biggest baddest goons so hard, they yielded. He got the world to talk about a dc team in the championship picture and broke the DC curse. When he’s gone, hockey just won’t be the same. As a caps fan for 25 years maybe even closer to 30 , I can honestly say I love hating y'all in a competitive way. But I appreciate every single thing that your team over the years have done for the NHL and growing the sport in areas where it wasn't the most popular. I'm all over the place when it comes to my favorite teams. The only home team I cheer for has always been the capitals. I've lived in Maryland my whole life and growing up my Uncle lived in Texas and we went to visit. I was 5 and he bought me a cowboys jersey. #11 Danny white. Been a fan ever since. Coming home from school I got out @ 3:00 and we had WGN the Chicago station. In Chicago there behind in time zone. It was 3:05 here but 2:05 out there. almost every day the Cubs game came on because they didn't have lights on the stadium until recently. So hearing Harry Carey daily I naturally became a Cubs fan and by 3:15 did my homework watching the Cubs game. I was a Celtics fan growing up because they were always on channel 4. And how could you hate Larry Bird. Today the 2 I really have stayed with are the cowboys and the Capitals. It's weird with my brothers watching a hockey game because it's the only time we're rooting for the same team lol. Back in the day it was Mario and Jager . And I hated them. But now I have a healthy respect for rivalry's and competition. I thought I hated the Redskins. I still do, but I miss the Days of RFK and Riggins and Thiseman and Monk ... You can't be great unless you're going up against equal competition. Alex Ovechkin and Crosby have done more for the sport then any other dynamic duo in the history of the game. It won't be the same when they're both gone.
