    When looking for the best gaming monitor, there are some key features you need to prioritize. Particularly when it comes to a curved Sim Racing screen, you’ll want something with a high refresh rate, low input lag and response time, a good contrast ratio, and enough screen space to give you as realistic a POV as possible.
    On paper, the LG 45″ Ultragear OLED Curved Gaming Monitor delivers on all these fronts. With an aggressively curved 45″ screen, and a lightning-fast 240Hz refresh rate. Is this the best monitor for your Sim Racing Rig? Or are these impressive stats just overkill? We put this beast of a monitor to the test to find out.

    I just got this and hooked up my Mac mini and PS5 and all I can say is WOW!! Super fast and super clear on both. COD and Red Dead 2 look awesome on this on my PS5. I was sceptical because every video I've watched talked about the games being stretched on the PS5 but in my opinion I can't see anything that looks bad. I prefer 21x9 if large enough or 16x9 for sim racing. The current 32x9 panel sizes are just not big enough for me...as you said Will the loss in height just take way to much from the immersion for me.

    It doesn't matter at all if you can tell the difference or not that is not where the advantage is. You are still been presented with an image earlier in time to react sooner to all the small things the car does and at the higher end of sim racing you bet this makes a difference. Is it going to shave second off , no but it will shave a tenth or two and make you more consistent and in the long braking zones from higher speeds it is much easier to brake exactly on the point you need to.

    I bought one of these. I got a terrific deal on an open box from Best Buy for 45% off and not a single scratch or dead pixel. I am running it with an RTX 4090 and a somewhat underpowering over clocked i5-13600K but it is more powerful than both the i9-11900K and RTX 3080 TI used for this review. I get great gaming performance at ultimate resolutions, but I don't reach the 240 Hz monitor capability setting. I doubt that even an i9-14900 would peg it at 240 Hz. One thing I did not hear in your review was just what was your FPS you were actually achieving. Ultimately a monitor only can display the FPS it is getting from the system. So you report not much difference between a setting of 144 Hz and 240 Hz in the racing game and Cyberpunk but they are very CPU and GPU intensive games. The monitor may not have been able to display a full 240 Hz refresh because it was not getting 240 FPS from the system. If you have to turn settings down to get a 240 Hz refresh than are you actually comparing apples to apples? Also I think a site such as UFO clearly demonstrates the difference between 144 Hz and 240 Hz display of a monitor on a level playing field.

  • @SlyNine
    @SlyNine Před rokem

    You're miss understanding a bit on different led tech. Edge lite and field array local dimming are only relevant for HDR display. Cheaper displays have neither. Edge lite generally only lights in columns. So there wouldn't be converging lights from the ranks and columns, just a vertical column of light going from the top to the bottom.
    Stay clear of edge lite if you want HDR. Most you can disable the local dimming completely, which is what I do.

    Brilliant Monitor, there! I'd need this one for my racing rig as well.. but I'm wondering if running this on my laptop would force me to lower down some in game grafics details due to the higher native resolution this device comes with, compared to the one of my laptop which is 1080p...

    • @JoeJacksonGT3
      @JoeJacksonGT3 Před rokem +2

      Yes. You'd struggle to run a game on this monitor from your laptop if your laptop was designed for 1080p. Once you increase resolution, you'll need to think about how you'll manage to run a game for that res.
      My general rule of thumb is to invest in the rig (PC) first, then the monitor.

    The high refresh rate at 240Hz makes real difference in gaming experience - when the frame rate is more than 200 FPS (at best when 300 fps or more), the gameplay smoothness is way beyond of some 144Hz. Of course that is if your perception are able to handle that many information or frames at same time.

    • @CC-tb8mn
      @CC-tb8mn Před 10 měsíci

      Yes I agree, been using a Samsung G9 for roughly 3 years but you really need to utilise all that refresh rate, at 150fps from the GPU and 240hz screen yeah youll see 0 difference from 144/240hz because the GPU isnt sending all that information, at 240hz with my GPU cranking out 275 its hypnotisingly smooth the gameplay racing

    15:03 I seriously doubt the rtx 3080 ti is pulling off 150+ FPS there, let alone 240. I think about the refresh rate impact, when we start saying things like "maybe", "perhaps", "it's somewhat possible that i am maybe able to see a difference", we should just attribute that "difference" to placebo effect and call it a day.

  • @Remzly
    @Remzly Před rokem +4

    I found the exact same result. I have equal pace on my xbox at 60hz compared to my pc at 360hz. The higher hz only helps with immersion and very slightly with catching slides if you go over the limit. My opinion is that 165hz monitors are the sweet spot, given how cheap some of them are now.

    • @cozymonk
      @cozymonk Před rokem

      I can see sim racing being different than something like an FPS in that regard. FPSs benefit a lot from higher refresh rates, because of twitch reaction time and pixel accuracy. Sim racing is more of a "flow." You learn the track and learn where the reactions are going to happen, so you condition yourself to a pace. Even going down to 30fps might not impact that pace so much as it's not necessarily twitch reaction times that you're using. There are twitch reactions, sure, like catching a skid, but many of them get input from other places, such as sound or force feedback and the interaction is more intuitive and natural (if you're already familiar with driving real cars).
      There are instances, like avoiding a wreck, that seem like maybe they'd benefit from higher response rates, but I think these things still happen more slowly enough compared to the reaction moments in an FPS that the benefit is negligible.
      Personally, I think 120Hz is a sweet spot, but I made that determination years ago. If 165Hz is cheap, now, then that's the new sweet spot. I have a 144Hz monitor and I run most games at 120Hz because I like it better when the game runs consistently at 120Hz then jumping around as I can't play most games locked at 144Hz. On games I can lock at 144, I can barely tell the difference between 144 and 120. I can if I pay close attention, but it's not worth the inconsistent frame times.
      The only time I can feel a clear and definite difference between 120 and 144 is in VR. anything less than 120 is an absolute no for me in VR, now. 90Hz makes me nauseous in about 10-15 min, but I can do 120Hz for about 2-3 hours before getting woozy. I have no idea how long I could play at 144; I never play for more than a couple hours at a time and it's never caused me any nausea. Only simple games like Compound can run at 144Hz.

    • @Remzly
      @Remzly Před rokem

      @@cozymonk Agreed. I got this high refresh rate monitor for FPS games specifically, and it definitely helps there. Racing games it doesnt help pace, because hooking up a good lap is all about timing of your inputs, which you can see coming as you approach a corner. Only helps in the specific other situations that you pointed out.

    As always, great review! Samsung released a 57" 1000R 32:9 that is also very insteresting. It would be great, even if Samsung doesn't ask you to review such monitor, to see how they compare. The 57" might be wide and tall enough to be the ideal screen.
    Also I have a triple 1000R 32" screen setup and I have to say I'm not so happy about how triple curved monitors are handled by Sim apps. The screen setup works for flat screens while developers should add a curved triple setup as well, because where the side screens curved join you have a way less engle coming from the center screen. The angle is performed by the curvature and not the joining angle alone. If you setup the right engle between curved screens you get a very narrow visual at the sides, if you insert the right overall angle you get a bad transition from the center screen.

    I personally own the Corsair Flex which is the same essential technology and to me the 800R is the perfect curvature, but I too can make my screen flat. My three complaints are no DisplayPort 2.x, PPI is clearly noticeably low in comparison to its counterpart that I also own the 175Hz Alienware 34-in OLED and lastly, ideally I'd like to have seen an Nvidia Ultra version. However, clearly even the RTX 40 series lacks DisplayPort 2.x which completely blows my mind because both my RTX 3090 and RTX 4090 can easily saturate DisplayPort 1.4.
    Ideally we're all heading towards 1kHz 5K-8K wide ratio, large screens and the technology is certainly available at least from monitors. It may take another one or two generations to drive them at high refresh rates. However, monitors out last GPUs by at least two generations if not three or four. I play FPS games and I need the responsiveness.

Perhaps its all my years of FPS gaming. Hell back in the 90's I was running high refresh rates in Counter-Strike on CRTs.

    Monitor refresh rate is really interesting. I have been playing first person shooter somewhat competitively for 5 years on a 240hz monitor at 240FPS. Because of this I became very frame sensitive. If my FPS drops even a small bit from 240 to 220 I immediately notice it and look up to my FPS counter like what is going on. However if I'm playing a racing game I don't really notice a change above 190 but I can easily get use to 160 is and still be fine. Does high FPS make you better? The short answer is no. The long answer is that it has a few small advantages and if you are really good at first person shooters can actually help you. It makes tracking of enemies easier, can make recognizing enemies faster, can help with target acquisition and overall less stressful on the eye. However in for sim racing I don't really see how anything above 144hz can benefit you. Maybe if you are driving F1 cars on iRacing it could help with consistency a bit but I think if you are only going to be simracing save your money and try to go for triple screen so you can see your mirrors.

    You should test at the distance most simracers would be using, around the 500-600 mm range. I'm assuming the monitor will look pretty terrible at that distance not only because of the humungous pixels (why didn't they at least use 3840x1600?!!) and resulting terrible PPI of about equal to a 27" 1080p display but also, to then add insult to injury, they used a fairly aggressive & grainy-style coating. I can understand the coating due to paranoia about people complaining of reflections due to the aggressive curve but, damn, they should have used 3840x1600 instead of 3440x1440.
