    here's a joke I think you'll like
    A Ranger goes gator hunting
A Ranger decides one day that he wants to go gator hunting and make some boots, so he gets dressed and packs his gear. He then stops at a local tackle shop to get some bait and tips on where he would have the best luck.
The shopkeep tells him where to go and sells him some bait and as the Ranger starts to leave he says: “I sent some Marines out that way a couple days ago and haven’t heard from them. Can you check on them while you’re out there?”
The Ranger agrees and sets out arriving at the bayou a short while later.
As he’s setting up, he notices the two Marines a little ways from him, with a massive pile of dead gators next to them.
He decides to greet the Marines but as he’s walking to them a giant gator leaps out of the water at one of them. The second Marine tackles it to the ground and shoves a knife through it’s jaw.
The Ranger rushes over to check on them and asks if they’re okay when one of the Marines looks at the dead gator and says:
“Damnit! This one ain’t wearin’ boots either!”

    • @Azlehria
      @Azlehria Před rokem +11

@@k.s.4209 What we were taught in BC was to roll the body of the cover _to_ the brim and then stuff it into a thigh pocket, brim up. That way you could just snap it out and hook it on your head. The brim curve was determined by the size of your leg.
_Technically_ we were taught to fold it twice: grasp the bill in one hand, remove cover, use the other hand to invert the back half inside the front and then fold the top down. But it almost instantly turned into "punch and scrunch", which is a method I'd already seen Fleet Marines using before I enlisted but hadn't understood at the time. Further refinement made it a one-handed operation - grab the _back_ of the cover, thumb on top, fold inward as you yank it off, scrunch it forward with the brim braced against your leg as you pull the pocket flap up with the same hand, shove down.

When you bend your brim (which has nothing to do with a "Ranger Roll") it makes the Patrol Cap (PC) easier to store in your thigh pocket of your uniform and are more comfortable to wear.
The "Ranger Roll" is called that because The Rangers roll the side and back hems of their PCs around the crown of the head.

With berets, the more the crest moves to the left, and more angled that it sits on your head the "cooler" you are. With boonie hats, the "dweebs" wear it with the strings on top making it look like a "cowboy" hat. The "cool kids" wear it like an "old school" (1900-1941 era) campaign hat, or the in the "Gabby Hayes"/"Carlos Hathcock" style.

When my husband transferred from navy to army, he automatically started his roll one he hit bootcamp so by the time I saw him in his Army uniform his cap had a middle to tight roll. He wore it that way because it actually fit better over his glasses. He switched out to contacts when he could but if he had to wear them, which in bootcamp he wore only glasses, then the cap fit better. He rarely wore a cap beside required but when he did it was had similar curve for same reasons. His contacts weren't cheap. Gas permeable .

You can absolutely just go straight to a range rule, because it's a roll not a bend. You just roll the brim as tight as you can put her rubber band around it a couple times to hold it and then let it sit for a little while. It's plastic, it's flexible, if you don't fold it, it won't snap.

For plastic brims. Get a pot of water up to boiling. Turn it off. Submerge the brim of the cap into the water for 5-7 seconds. The molecules of the plastic will become temporarily moldable. If you do what you described while the brim is still heated. Not only do you have the roll. But the brim will cool down and become forever fixed in that roll. It will not return to its unrolled form.

Fun fact: Rangers wear there caps that way to signify the difference in Rangers and regular Army. It was only authorized for rangers to wear there caps that way. Now they’ve moved on to the beret.

Similarly if you're in an airborne unit the longer the fold the more attitude.
When I was on status my fold was so deep I couldn't see out of my right eye.

The ranger roll helps it fit like a ball cap and fly off during high winds like it will do with that wide rim does.

Originally it came from stress, those taking their hat off and throwing it, etc, but the military now just does it for tradition.

The "ranger roll" is created by folding your hat and putting it in your cargo pocket. Then basically sitting in an office chair for eight hours with the hat in your pocket.

My dad was a helicopter pilot in the army and he would crease his hats like a fucking circle

In the Marine Corps I would take the bill on my cover and bend both sides together putting a crease in the center. Then about a 1/4" in a crease on both sides so there was an actual vertical ends on my cover. I would split the material on the back side and insert a peice of custom made plastic to hold that shape. The Marines cover had small panels around the sides of the cover. I would insert small peices of plastic here too. My covers would hold the designed shape like no one else's. I also prefaded my uniforms by soaking them in a 50/50 H2O&Bleach solution for 4 hours and then wash them. Because the Marine Corps never actually issued an order retiring Vietnam jungle Tiger patern camo it was technically usable. I showed up to formation one day with my dad's old Army Tiger bdus with the USMC iron on emblem and all. Our platoon Sergent did not like this but our Company CO loved it. He ordered 2 jungle Tiger uniforms for everyone in the company. From then on we wore these on Thursdays and Fridays until the base comander got wind of this and put a stop to it. He did not want us standing out any more than we already did as a Recon Battalion with Armored vehicles no other units beyond our sister Battalions in Camp Pendleton and Okinawa had.

I Ranger rolled my soft cap... for the look. I was an M1A2 driver. I was low-speed, high drag. I was a PT test dropout, showing up to PT formation drunk (y'all remember those reeds in the wind, swaying), I threw up on more 5 mile runs than I care to remember (our 1st SGT was a fucking marathon runner, he would do 5 miles with the try-hards before PT formation.) I SUCKED at PT...but I was a fucking AMAZING driver. I could give my TC/gunner a rock solid firing platform. So while I got shit for being a disgusting fatbody during PT tests, my NCOs were always happy to have me in the driver's hole. 19k strong, 1st CAV! 🤣

Reminds me of in the marines we’d purposely take ass chewings and wear old worn cammies that showed we’d been there and done it. Where the fresh boots all had brand new joints
