i wanna read a fanfiction that has this song in it. a crossover of Harry potter meet Popeye it would be fun to read. have a nice week and weekend and a good 2020 year.
The Taxman chased Wimpy down to get his burger back. The costumes, songs, stunts and set were well done considering they traveled all the way to Malta to film this.
A website about the film reveals a few surprises. The town did NOT exist at first. It was completely built just for the movie. It became a tourist destination after the cast and crew left and still stands today. Remains one of the reasons I want to travel to Malta. I'd love to walk along the beach and piers letting this song play in my head...
If you read the old Popeye comics, you will know that every character here has a name, and featured in the comic somewhere, even the wild man sitting outside the door when the tax collector leaves.
I've been thinking about this movie a lot. I was born in 1982, I saw this as a kid. I haven't seen the movie in years. For some reason, all the songs started to come back to me all of a sudden when I've been locked inside. This one in particular (also "Sweethaven"). I brought it up to a couple of friends, and they said, "OH, WHAT A HORRIBLE MOVIE!!!!" And I'm like, "Yeah, heh heh ...." Truth is, though, I love it. I know the man writing the songs and lyrics was on drugs the whole time was often springing brand new stuff on the talent at the crack of dawn, it's a pretty quirky film -- but I still like it. To this day, I like it. I couldn't take it anymore, I had to look it up today, and I'm glad I did.
The problem is that except for the five or six main characters, the others do appear but only 0.5% of the time, if that. Most stopped appearing after 1940.
No one, no, it was a role made for Robin Williams, but he said he hated that role, or so I heard. The actor that was Bluto was perfect too, he really captured Bluto's brutish nature.
The great Paul L. Smith returns to Malta as Brutus. In 1978 he was the evil prison guard in Midnight Express also filmed in Malta. 4 years later he wilts in the heat of the Mexican desert in Dune.
Think about the amount of geniuses whose work had something to do with this movie, starting with Elzie Segar, who created Popeye; Robert Altman, who directed it; Jules Feiffer, who wrote the screenplay; Harry Nilsson, who wrote the music; and Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall, who completely captured Popeye and Olive Oyl. It's no wonder this film still feels perfect, forty years down the pike.
I just shared this with someone on facebook who claimed that "The universe is not abstractions all the way down." I think it's very helpful to point out that everything is actually food.
Things I love about this scene: Rough House The sound Bluto makes while eating. The dude randomly falling down the stairs. The hamburgers that somehow look like the best and worst burgers ever. The Taxman breaking the 4th wall. The sound Cole Oyl makes when the ketchup erupts. The guy mopping Oxblood's plate. Hamgravy
RIP Robin.....I loved many of your movies, but you were totally the best Popeye! Thanks to you and the cast for bringing the town of Sweethaven to life.

Agreed. Today a filthy mouth is considered comedy. Maybe we should bring back silent movies until we get a generation of serious movie makers; and an audience who does not believe that vulgarity is funny.
Hollyweird is running sooo much CGI that it's ruining movies. One of the worst was the movie "The langoliers." The CGI looked like it was done by a 16 year old messing with dad's Fred Flintstone computer...
Harry Nilsson musical, slapstick, story time perfection right here. Of course he is the composer on this movie. Robin, Altman and team make the whole magical production come to life! Always so fun.
WIMPY: "I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." CUSTOMER: "I will gladly blow your head off if you do not get away!" (Wimpy runs like hell.)
WHY would they not put this on the soundtrack? This song is genius and an ear-worm to boot. That was a dumb move. Of course there were many dumb moves associated with this movie. It is BELOVED by many many people now and they basically hid it when it was released.
I remember seeing this on the big screen. My siss took me several times. I loved and love this movie. I started singing this to myself today. I searched for it and was surprised to see so many positive comments as I remember all the hate back in the day. It was considered a flop. Glad the narrative has changed. 👍
I remember when I was a kid I went to winter camp and they had a huge cafeteria, and each morning when I walked into that cafeteria with my friends this song always came to my mind.
Wimpy is one of my favorites. Universal Orlando owns the theme park rights to this character so you can pay homage to Popeye by eating at a burger stand there named Wimpy's.
WIMPY: "I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." CUSTOMER: I would gladly tell you to get out of here before i put a shotgun in your head Wimpy runs for the hills
Wimpy: "I will gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." Roughhouse: (angrily) "I will gladly tell you to get lost before I punch you in the nose!" Wimpy: (doesn't need telling twice, runs like hell).
Does anyone know why this song isn't on the soundtrack? It was the whole reason I bought it way back when - so disappointed it wasn't there. And it's not like the (vinyl) album is so crowded with songs that something had to go!
the most random song ever put in a movie and its been stuck in my head for days
Yeah, it'll do that to you, unfortunately. Watch with caution!
steve lafogg yeah here it is 2017 and I had sweet sweet Haven in my mind this day!
i wanna read a fanfiction that has this song in it.

Bryan Neideffer and here is is the future, 2019, and I just thought “God will al-ways bless ... Sweethaven”
Days?? I saw this in 1988 and it's STILL stuck in my head!!!!!
The most underrated Robin William movie ! I'll be 45 this month and love it as much as I did when I was 6 ... thank you for the happiness
Same here, when Im down, I put this on and it cheers me right up. Love to visit Sweethaven
I will be 48 this year and can recite all the lyrics! one of my bucket lists is to visit the town of Malta!
"I'm buying, he's paying." - my favorite quote
A quote my sister and I would always reenact from this movie.
Such an underrated movie.
This whole film is a work of art ...will one day be recognized as such. Robin Williams is quite extraordinary and Shelly Duval , transcendent.

Robyn Williams totally nailed The role of Popeye. I can't see anyone else even coming close.
I agree! He was way better than Dave Coulier as Popeye!

@@62202ify Yes Paul W Smith was a perfect Bluto R.I.P. 1936-2012.
And even though he played a minor character, Paul Dooley was perfectly cast as Wimpy.
@@danielhainline8882 That's the only other guy who could even come close to filling the role.
God, I loved this movie as a kid and still do
There will never be another live-action Popeye film, it was already perfected here
They'll figure out some way to ruin it, and make popeye a lesbian who's against the patriarchal spinach, or something.
@@andrewhawkins8616ah, they'll probably make Popeye black, trans, or both
Actually, there will probably never be another live action Popeye because this one was trashed by critics and bombed at the box office. Sadly.

I like this movie because Robin Williams CAN NOT DO IT ANY BETTER AT PLAYING POPEYE

Paul Dooley is such a great Wimpy!
The best ever
They really did a great job of capturing the cartooniness of of the original 30s cartoon.

RIP Robin Williams (snif).
Wimpy knows the rules no cash or card no hamburgers

Well, the sign says, "Absolutely no credit. This means you, Wimpy!" So I guess it's all cash.

Physical comedy like this is so missed. Takes so much skill and timing. Something sorely missing in Hollywood today.
Bill Irwin is still at it, he played the robot in Interstellar.

Sweethaven doesn't even have cars, so unless they have the taxman deliver on his little motor trike, I doubt it.

Brilliant movie. What would you say the timeframe for it represents...the 1930s...earlier?
I don't think it's meant to represent a particular time period, it's supposed to look like it could be any time.
They mention Calvin Coolidge & the Great Depression briefly, so it's at least some time after 1929, which is also the year Popeye made his debut.
