I couldn't have said it better. The score is terrific, the casting was solid (Robin Williams nailed the role; one of his best performances ever). This film deserved better support from the critics.
The ultimate irony is that Bluto forcefed Popeye his first can of Spinach, and then for the rest of his days lived in terror of the moment Popeye would willingly, and gleefully, eat another. That one punch taught Bluto that when Popeye eats the Spinach, that's when the REAL hurting is about to start.
This was such a great movie, so enjoyable to watch. My favorite part is right here at the end and my great-nephew looks a lot like Sweet Pea with that crooked smile! "Popeye..toot toot!!" Love it! :D
I don't know if anyone will agree with me, but I think Paul Smith's Bluto is one of the great movie villains of history. I love the way he says "Eat this spinach!" and "See ya in Davy Joneses locker!" I've had those lines stuck in my head for 40 years.
Williams and even Duvall were perfectly cast. Williams was so much better than I would have thought going in, he did an absolutely flawless job with Popeye's voice and mannerisms (and, btw, the actor Josh Gad, shortly after Williams's death, revealed that Williams's performance as Popeye was a big part of what inspired him to get into acting himself). Even though Duvall was a bit annoying, that was pretty much exactly how Olive was in the cartoons. I'm kind of torn on how Popeye defeats Bluto in this. On the one hand, taking him out with one punch is kind of anticlimactic, as the cartoons usually had him, after eating spinach, clobbering Bluto with rapid punches before K.O.'ing him with a big one. On the other hand, having it be one punch and having Bluto run (Or, in this case, swim) away from that is rather fitting for him. At the end of the day, Bluto was nothing but a bully, and that's how bullies usually react when they come across someone both willing and able to stand up to them.
I was talking to my younger sister about this I’m so happy you posted this so I can show her so many years later. That octopus scared the sh!t outta me growing up

This film has to be one of my very favorites. I remember seeing it as a child and being ENTIRELY entertained. Man...now I want to watch the whole thing again...
If there is ever an actor who can top Robin Williams' portrayal of Popeye I will have to see to believe. This scene showcases Popeye and Bluto's rivalry as it was always shown in the cartoons. Every actor played their part to perfection, even Shelley Duvall perfectly did the voice for Olive Oyl, and Popeye finally gave in to spinach and the catchy theme song coming on. This film will stand out as Robin Williams' best among his most comedic portrayals and more reason never to forget him, timeless and classic film.
Robert Polanco i think people use the word Faggot in different terms nowadays since it's overused it's not basically pointed towards LGBTQ anymore that much, now they use the that word for calling out idiots, loners, jerks, lowlifes, people that are stupid things to themselves on so many levels.
One of those movies that became a cult classic, that people weren't warm to when released. Well the critics etc weren't. I guess the critics were expecting something different than an actual live action film that was the tone of the show, but it was. Which is what made it great. But it actually nailed the tone of the show, and became a lot of people's guilty pleasures, and was beloved by many others, especially in the following years. Which is why it's wonderful that it's appreciated now.
This scene was filmed in a huge water tank. I read that the octopus flying over the rock was suppose to be more realistic, but by this time they were already over budget, so they just threw in the cheap effect at the last minute. This is my favorite movie, has been since I was 5 years old.
interesting yet painful fact: when that happened, despite being a funny/comedic effect, that hit caused apparently an open injury that had his head had to be stitched during filming
I love the part where Popeye's dad reveals his treasure to be his son's old things, along with a few cans of spinach and a picture frame that said "Me & Son", quite similar to the one Popeye had, only Popeye's picture frame said "Me & Poppa." To Bluto, that would've been junk, but to Popeye's dad, it was definitely treasure.
