The Unstoppable Monster That Devastated Japan

- This video is about the Lucky Dragon Number Five, the ill-fated ship that spawned Godzilla. Godzilla is more than just a movie about a lizard, it is a way to understand and come to terms with one of the most destructive moments in human history, by the people who were forced to experience it. This aims to capture that story.

Thanks for watching! You're clearly one of the good ones.
Thanks to everyone who asked about our Patreon. I'll put out a full video when I get the time, but for those who want to jump the gun and get on board from the start, here's the link: www.patreon.com/rareearth
It means a huge deal that so many have asked us to start an account. I never thought anyone would watch these videos, let alone support them.
Rare Earth didn't think they'd watch?? What you do in these videos is more than just presenting the facts about places. You tell the story, you make the colors and sounds real, you take me on a journey that makes me think, blows my mind, makes me appreciate our human story. Your whole team deserve 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏 for going beyond a CZcams video. I'll enjoy watching you grow.✌️💖
Rare Earth you are the only one who does unbiased videos on foreign soil
For what it is worth: There was good reason that OSS wanted to use the Atomic Bomb on Imperial Japan. The US had decoded the Japanese Encryption, and knew about "Operation Cherry Blossoms at Night".The I-400 Carrier Submarine being ditched near Hawaii, because the Emperor had surrendered, after Nagasaki was bombed. If the war continued for anther month, then unit 731s bioweapons would have been used on California, with the Aichi M6A Float Planes being used on a Suicide Bombing Mission, without their Floats [landing gear].
I would have targeted Unit 731, based at the Pingfang district of Harbinin in occupied China, afterwards telling both the Chinese Nationalists & Communists to Euthanize & Cremate everyone who had flash burns from the bomb, and then ring the blast zone with buckthorn trees, which would have saved millions of Chinese, from Unit 731s hastily dumped Bioweapons.
Also I would have nuked the Tokyo Imperial Palace, rather than cities like Hiroshima & Nagasaki, knowing that at least one Atom Bomb would be needed to persuade the Japanese Navy to scuttle the I-400 class carrier submarine before it could infect the West-coast, with weaponized bubonic plague, This attack by Aichi M6A float planes being used as suicide aircraft, to deliver Bubonic Plague would have killed between 1/4 of the population of the West-coast, and 1/4 of the population of the World.
The worst part, many of the Japanese Doctors & Scientists at Unit 731 thought they had made a doomsday weapon, and, yet they still weaponized all known Human & Livestock Diseases, using Chinese Civilians as Disposable Lab Rats....

You content is better and more fun to watch than those traditional cables. Awesome work👌
Dave Hollinshead... I don't want to get into a long drawn-out conversation about this because I haven't looked at any of the material you offer here in the links but I did read years ago that Japan had tried to surrender and we would not let them surrender or accept their surrender for a number of months.
Is it true how would I know if I wasn't alive back then and I'm sure many who were alive back then don't know what the truth is.
The narrator is Chris Hadfield's son? There's something special in their bloodline. Keep up the great work guys.
Nothing special, only enthusiastic dedication and hard work

And a gift for storytelling.
Not something everybody can do.
IamMunkk Chris is the guy that catches the pedophiles right? He sounds like him. Makes sense that’s his dad.

No, the astronaut.
special...deceiving humanity for a living? especially disgusting!!
The original Godzilla movie ("Gojira") from 1954 has a reminder, and a message, it just matters where you're from.
In Japan, the film was a grim reminder of not only the nuclear bombings, but to the Lucky Dragon 5 incident. If you haven't seen the original, Japanese version of Gojira, let me give you a brief synopsis of the opening scene.
Fisherman and Sailors are aboard a boat quietly playing cards, with sailor esc harmonica music plays. Suddenly, off the port side of the boat, a bright light forms. The crew members jolt up, until they're suddenly blinded, a man inside the ship starts telegraphing Tokyo, when water splashes in through the roof.
Now, I'm going to look at the message part of the film.
During Gojira, it's never said, but is implied that America's nuclear bomb testing awakened and transformed godzilla from and Godzillasaurus, to Gojira. So the film implies that if America were to continue testing nuclear bombs, more Godzillas would appear....
ASamCalledSam triple facts. Very well put. ☝🏾✊🏾💯💯
Wow. I'll never think of Godzilla the same.
This was a coping method for the Japanese people. Godzilla is a personification of the devastation of nuclear war. Maybe in the back of my head, I knew this. But now that I know the story, it's all too apparent.
Afterthought bias
The way you wrote this comment is just pathetic. You posture as though you've theorized complete understanding of their culture. This is worse than weebery, pretending to understand from just one video.
Godzilla was more than this short documentary makes it. Everything about the original Godzilla was supposed to be a living stand in for the horrors of the nuclear age. It's flesh was made to replicate the skin of the survivors, the scales on it's back the toxic Ash that settled on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and it's breath the intense fury of the nuclear blasts. The rest of the story and the wanton destruction in film was war in and of itself.
Seriously. I didn't know Godzilla has such a deep cultural meaning. Am I so uneducated? thank you.
Yes
The world is vast, so logically there's a lot to learn. It doesn't mean that anyone's uneducated but rather uninformed.
It doesn't matter if you don't know, what matters is that you keep wanting to learn
Well in the japanese culture there is almost always a deeper meaning behind everything (not for everything these days ofc)
I don't think many of us knew about that. Well we aren't that uneducated after watching this, are we? :D
This is the most beautiful analysis of Godzilla I've ever seen. Thank you, Colonel.
Colonel?
His dad is a colonel, not him.
I recommend the CZcams channel “Up From The Depths” if you want to see more such beautiful analyses of the Godzilla franchise
Castle Bravo was actually the world's second hydrogen bomb, but it was the first "dry" H bomb design that could be made aircraft deliverable. The world's first hydrogen bomb was Ivy Mike, but it was purely a proof of concept.
The screw-up that caused Castle Bravo to be three times more powerful than originally planned is an interesting story in itself.
I love this series, they are deep and full of hidden knowledge. In every video i start watching it thinking "what is hadfield going to show me today" keep the series please :)
I normally don't post comments, but I really appreciate all the effort you and your crew are putting into all the videos. Great job, and keep it up!
Half of my wisdom about Japan I get from you!
Please keep making these
I read a lot of negative comments today that bummed me out, but ones like yours really make me think it might be worth the time. Thanks a lot, Steve.
They're great! You have 652 likes and only 16 dislikes, thats standard for any good CZcams video.
I'm looking forward to the next video.
I love this channel, never stop. I want to learn all I can.
Being a Big Godzilla fan, I'm glad to see some one telling the story and meaning of Godzilla.
Yet another piece of excellent brain candy.
EVERY SINGLE VIDEO! I think, "Wow... That was fantastic" Thank you guys. I absolutely love this series.
wow. awesome, that story is so dramatic and beautiful. So brilliant video. Thank you!
ComedyCacti Exactly my thoughts
akis geogeo haha I'm a Mindreader 😏 xD
ComedyCacti Your species does it all the time right?
akis geogeo Yes totally! :D everytime!
Francesco's walking backwards skill is on point!
I have been futilely searching for videos like this. History, geography,culture...shared with empathy in a tight time frame. Spectacular!! Thank you!!!
Best series on youtube at the moment! Wow. The production quality, the information, and the fact that you managed a nine and a half minute long segment - from memory - without mistakes, AND with captivating storytelling is frankly mind blowing in it's own way.
Love your series!! I try to keep reminding myself that I need to keep being objective and question everything I hear and it is just IMPOSSIBLE to keep from being swept away in the stories you so beautifully tell!
This is truely an amazing story, never had any idea what godzilla really meant. Subscribed to this channel, keep it up! Really loved the slow pace you took to explain the story, Impressive and made me search hours for background information.
Well done! I've been living in Japan for more than half my life and I've still learned a lot from your videos. Thank you! And please keep them coming.
First video on youtube in a while that made me cry. Thanks for this.
Wow, I am so glad I found this channel. You're doing fantastic work.
Amazing video, this one gave me goosebumps. Keep it up, really loving this series
I'm really happy to hace discovered this channel, I love these videos.
im addicted to your videos. I watch them every night. its 3am here and I have work tomorrow.
I really enjoyed this, the pacing was much gentler, much more meditative than what is common on CZcams or even TV
There is a good Japanese movie called "Black Rain" (kuroi ame) not to be confused with the Michael Douglas movie of the same year also set in Japan. Kuroi Ame is set in a village of hibakusha that have to deal with the medical uncertainties and social isolation of being Hiroshima survivors.
Every time I'm learning something new. Thank you very much!
Hey, I can’t do anything by watching 97,000 more times... BUT if each of who sees this video shares it with 97,000 friends, well then, we might make a difference. This is one of the most intelligent pieces I have ever seen on CZcams. Thank you. You have really influenced my thoughts.
Tremendous work yet again!! Thank you
As always, your narration and Little Italy's camera work are both fantastic. You find such interesting and unique topics! And I really enjoy freezing the credits and reading them all. Just awesome.
Great series! Thanks Evan, you're doing great!
I have loved basically all your episodes, specially the ones done on Armenia and these on Japan but this one, it is just perfect. You captured the feeling perfectly.
Thank you
Thank you for making outstanding shows.
Evan, this is really really good stuff. My day becomes a little deeper after watching one of your new videos. I really really appreciate this and your work. If you start a patreon, i will gladly be the first to sign up. Would love to say hi to you when you're in Sydney. Please keep creating - thanks, Petr

Ethan Thanks. That really means a lot! I'll try to keep making them better as time goes on. :)
Great work as always.
this one was so emotional... thank you!
Really fascinating! It never even occurred to me that an old well-known movie like this had such a backstory.
I'm loving the inspirational awareness put forth with this series.
One of your most amazing and underrated episodes!
Very high quality content and informative. Keep up the good work!
Another incredible video Evan.
Wow, this made me tear up. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for what you do.
our videos should have a humanitarian award. that was a great message. thank you.
That was truly informative, thank you.
This was an excellent video- a perfect forward to Godzilla (1954)
I've been on a Rare Earth Binge for daaaaays and such great content!
great episode!
Informative yet respectful as always 👏
Liking your videos just feels natural. You guys really produce quality content, but
may I say, that I really like the text at the end of your videos :D
They give it the little extra edge :D
You just blew my mind, awesome.
Oh boy a new video realesed, let's see if this one is as amazing as the others.
I really hope that you guys get the millions of subscribers that you deserve soon enough
Great video!
Amazing video as always, however the museum's ambient of silence feels to be challenging your tone of voice. Feels nice to see how you control your tone throughout the videos and the evolution you have done!
It wasn't the first H-Bomb, that would've been Ivy Mike, a liquid fueled Hydrogen Bomb. Castle Bravo was the first SOLID fuel H-Bomb.
The amount of empathy in this video for the people who had no hand in the war and yet suffered is amazing
Wow I always thought Godzilla was from Japanese mythology,I learned something new today thanks to rare earth.Greetings from Australia
..it sort of is, but a much more modern 'mythology', but still in an analogeous metaphorical manner typical of mythos.
I discovered Rare Earth a couple of months ago. Took me a while to realize first that the narrator was Canadian (first though he was an Uruguayan educated at the US) and later that he is Chris Hadfield's son (Astronomy geek here).
Great Series man, I see many episodes in a row just like a Netflix series.
True thoughtful insights these days are Rare Earth.
To me, your best episodes are in Japan.
You are kind of different there.
Regards.
I know I'm way late but I didn't tell you how great this was the first time I watched it. There's gotta be something in those Hadfield genes.
i could watch thousands of videos like this. the soul of japan one was amazing too.
While the events covered are well known, it's interesting to get a glimpse of how they were seen with Japanese eyes and the effects they had on society afterwards. I visited the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum last year, and it too was a very humbling experience.
Excellent work; please keep going.
Subscribed. How Is This Channel NOT At 10 Million Viewers??
Mind = Blown
I knew Godzilla was an analogy of the nuclear bomb or America, but I never realised it was also an analogy of nuclear energy... interesting
I'm an English learner always looking foward to learning your beautiful word uses.
Great chanel with best content ever. Thank you so much.
Cảm Ơn
omg dude what a pleasure learning whit you!
Great channel
"History moves forward, not backwards."
That's a very good quote Evan.
97,000 is kind of excessive, Evan. Great video !
WOW THESE VIDEOS are Soo Smart im a Fan
Superb.
wondeful vid
Looking good Travis
This is great
i was so focused on this guy's weird shirt that i forgot to watch the video
Dankrupt Surf
That is why the credits said to watch it 97,000 more times :-)
Your ending credits are quite interesting on all your productions.
Interesting,Godzilla is meaningful,never knew that,thanks
The Godzilla referencing is deep! damn! It makes a lot of sense!! Damn! Mind Blown!!
The end credits are pretty great, too :D
Yes, they are.
you are the best storyteller on youtube.
I love Chris hadfield and all but......I don't remember ever subbing to this channel or even watching a video on it?
I probably subbed after his space oddesy song now that I think about it
Well then... welcome! :)
The Big One Stay! They're producing excellent content!
o I will 😃
Minor correction. Castle Bravo wasn't the first thermonuclear weapon test. That dubious honor goes to the Ivy Mike shot, in December of 1952.
you deserve more views
I love your shirt. Curious about the similar store if King Kong, do you have a video about that topic?
Great Channel. This is a production question. Can you share how you are capturing audio? Super clean audio, deep and rich on your talents voice. What microphone?
love ur t shirt!
Very interesting.
As a pop culture consumer - and, rarely, a creator as well - I knew something of the Gojira story. Nowhere near all of it, mind you.
Thank you for this additional piece of that puzzle.
SO COOOOOOOOL
Impressive story! loving this
Im just now realizing that all the credits are a little different in each video. Now, I have to go back and rewatch all of the video's I just binge watched. And I don't mind because they werre so good the first time and also I do find that I always miss something watching things just once.
