    Since I've moved to the suburbs of Paris, I've had to practice downhill stops a lot. I even made a few videos on it by myself.And for me the best ways is drag (t-stop) and slalom turns (curving). And also curving with the transition to powerslide. Never tried alternating plough, may be will check it in future.

    There is something special and unique about seeing your feet and knees directly via the GoPro selfie while you’re explaining it. More please. Thank you!

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 6 lety +2

      I know!!! Thank you. I was happy to discover with this video that recording the audio separately afterwards gives much more clarity than talking and filming and better audio (outdoors is always a pain with audio especially brighton which is by the sea and always windy). The BEST angle for looking at anyone's skating is directly from the side (or then the front or back). From the side you see the all important knee bend (or lack of it perhaps) and therein lies all the info to fixing it. I will be doing more of these I promise. I just need to get over feeling like an idiot in public! I've never used or even done a selfie properly! I'm not a fan. But learning and growing means 'being' at the edge of your comfort zone (i teach this) so I have to embody it where Im learning and thats video! Thanks for the encouragement. Much needed.

      it's not that special or unique, just how it's done today - see The Lino Life, Shop Task, PintoPonyProductions. Judging by the publishing date of the vid it might well be the result of one of my comments under an older video (or not).

    Brilliant! - thank you so much for doing this, Asha. Your camera work is excellent - I can't believe this is your first attempt with the GoPro, it certainly doesn't show! I've never tried the stepping plough stop on hills and rarely use my powerslide on them, so those are two I'll have to put into use much more. I also like your reply to another post where you mention needing to push beyond your comfort zone - it's something I need to do with hills (in control of course!) as well as backwards. Massive thanks again, and keep up that fantastic camera work. Next stop Hollywood?

    • @dushk0
      @dushk0 Před 6 lety +1

      T-stops should really be done on the outside edge, not just lazily hauling your foot around. That doesn't mitigate the wear that much but might make you feel better for balancing it out.

    I’m a decent ice hockey skater but inlines are scary. The easiest stop for me is a tight turn where I pivot about the heel of one foot. I can stop very quickly with that method. I see you do a spread eagle in the middle of that power stop. No way can I do a spread eagle. Inlines are so tiring compared to ice skates, and the lack of control on stopping is worrying. Ice rinks are closed, so I’m going to be doing more inline skating. About five hours practice so far. Much more is needed. Thanks for the videos, very informative.

      Sorry you had a fall (I assume that's what happened after the tensing up?) I recommend starting at the bottom of a new hill and slowly working your way up the hill adding 2 metres with each descent. Force yourself to stop on the hill and also at the bottom when you have all the speed of the hill. You must train hills like a specific goal with specific training drills and process. Otherwise they will always be problematic. Good luck.

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You need to check the slope before taking it and be aware of your limits. This awareness will come with experience and continuous practice of different stopping methods in a progressive way. In all videos with slopes Asha mentions you have to practice techniques on a flat surface and take slopes very gradually. I'm an instructor with more than 20 years of street skating and I'm not ashamed to say I took off my skates and walked a couple times when slopes were too steep.

    Hey! New to skating! Will the type of wheels have an impact on the T-Stop? I’ve purchased the Roces vidi skates

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Not at all. The T-stop is possible with any type of wheels. The bigger the wheel the more difficult it is to control speed and stop. Very hard wheels feel slippery when they are brand new, until the coating is worn a little. However, I don't think the problem are the wheels. Instead I must say the T-stop is not as easy as people think for beginners, it's actually an intermediate level stop. It involves several factors. Check this video czcams.com/video/We-1RnLY49Y/video.html If you are an absolute beginner I suggest you use the heel brake until you get the factors required for T-stop. Another good stop for beginners is the Stepping Plough. Asha has also an online course for beginner's stops here skatefresh.com/product/how-to-stop-beginner-level/ By the way, you are commenting on a video about slopes, and slopes are not good for beginners. So if you are a starter trying the T-stop downhill that's not good at all.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Stepping plough works in quads very well. In inlines is important the inclination on inside edges, apart from other factors; in quads since you don't have those edges, instead it will be more about the inverted V position and the most important factor will be the stepping out laterally and its cadence. This is a video about slopes... Think twice if you are planning to go downhill on quads using stepping plow. You should practice a thousand times on flat surface first, and still it will be dangerous downhill. Slopes are way much harder on quads and you can be more easily tripped up by debris.

    Excellent video once again, but I'm assuming the toes in side stepping technique would only work before you pickup speed, if you are already half way down the slope reaching a reasonable speed, that technique could potentially cause u to tip over 🤔, do correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 4 lety

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The stepping plough works great in slopes and speed as long as it's done perfectly, in fact speed skaters use it. However, it's tricky for most people because it needs a slow cadence, an exaggerated stepping out lateral motion and a correct angle for the feet. Three factors in harmony. If one of them is not under control it's easy to panic when you realize you go faster and faster. So it's a stop to practice a thousand times on flat first, and once you feel it works great at speed then you progress onto gentle slopes, and always start the slope practice at the bottom of it.

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. The point is that you shouldn't take a slope if you are not ready for that, and be ready means to know several stopping ways in order to combine them. You must be very comfortable doing it on a flat surface (with speed) and only afterwards you should practice in mild slopes to get used to it progressively. Besides, you don't have to wait until the speed is high, you must start stopping before that point.

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. Recreational/Fitness type or freeskate type would be fine to start. 3 things to have in count: it should be comfortable and fit, it should have a good ankle support, and it should have a heel brake. There are many skates that comes without brakes but they are for skaters who already know to stop. Stopping is not really easy when you are a beginner, so the heel brake helps you while you are learning the first steps. Asha does not recommend a particular model because it all depends on your foot shape, however many of her students say Powerslide Next is very comfy and seems to fit everyone.

    What about when you're flying down a hill at top speed as a newbie skater. It happened to me and I tried to use the break and I was going too fast so it knocked me off balance and I flew into the air and landed on my back. It was awful and I'm terrified of hills now.

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. I'm sorry for your accident but it's natural for you to be terrified now. It's incredible how many people come to watch this video after having an accident and not before! First of all, newbies shouldn't be taking slopes AT ALL. Second, one shouldn't be waiting to be flying downhill at top speed to apply stopping techniques. You should control your speed from the very beginning when your system sends you the first warning "Hey, you are going downhill!" and there are still chances to stay safe. This message is very noticeable and it's wrong not to pay attention to it, because the speed increases very quickly. It's just the same when you are in a horizontal plane. Your speed limit is adjusted in your brain according to the speed you feel comfortable and you are able to apply stopping techniques. That's your safety threshold. If you go beyond that limit then you pass the "point of no return" and you can only pray for the best, because if you try to do something at that speed, not in your comfort zone, chances are you'll fail and get in panic. Blocked mind means blocked body. The heel brake does work at high speed and in slopes but only if you are able to control it in a horizontal plane first. The same applies to every technique. This is why it's important for every skater to go beyond their limits BUT in a controlled way, in a controlled environment. You push the limit bit by bit and that's how your comfort zone expands.

    When i attempted do the t stop, the stoping leg starts to turn around and causes me to lose control downhill

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 3 lety +2

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. That's because your back leg is carrying too much weight. Most of the weight should be on the front leg and this leg must be bent. Two other things to have in count: 1) The skate in front should be on the center edge. 2) It's called T-stop but the position is actually like an L. If the back skate crosses behind trying to make a perfect T, that combined with an inside edge in the front skate... that could make you lose control. Besides, one thing that can help you is to extend in front one arm. If your back leg is the right one then extend in front the right arm, and viceversa. That will force your hips to keep facing the direction of travel. Practice the T-stop on flat surface until you have it perfect, and only then you can use it on a slope. For a further detailed explanation you can check Asha's online courses, they are great to learn different stopping methods skatefresh.com/learn-to-skate-online/

    can i get brakes for freestyle skates? does it even work together?

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 4 lety

      Hi. This is Sergio from Team Skatefresh. You will need to ask in a store if they have a brake to adapt to your particular model. All the major brands have one. Can freestyle and heel brake work together? The quick answer would be no, and that's why freestyle skates don't come with a brake. Freestyle involves slalom tricks and slides, those are very advanced techniques that take for granted that you already know how to stop without the brake. The problem is that the heel brake interferes with many of the tricks. In some you have to cross your skates very close to each other, in others you have to roll or pivot on the heel wheels. However, there are certain tricks, the most basic ones that you can still do even with a heel brake, for example the Fish which is the classic slalom move with both skates parallel where you go in zigzag like in ski, the Snake which is quite similar but with one skate in front of the other, the 1-foot which is of course the zigzag on 1 foot. You can do those forwards and backwards. And guess what, there are even very advanced moves that you can do too, such as the Butterfly, the Swan, the Footgun (AKA Rocket), the Wiper, the Christie, etc. Those moves involve either gliding on 1 foot or gliding on front wheels. So yeah! You can still do some freestyle slalom.

      Slopes are scary when you know you can't stop on them! So train everything on the flat first and avoid slopes! Every skater (in my opinion) should have 3-4 functioning stops that they can use in various combinations. THEN you are safe and your body will relax more and you can enjoy more terrains.
      Have you tried my free stopping lessons as part of my online courses? I have a full course series called "How to Stop" and each level has 3-4 different stops, so 12 in the full series. There is 1 free in each level. Check out the options here and click free trial on any of those courses.
