How to Transition from forwards to backwards on inline skates; Top 4 tips for Mohawks on weak side

  • Gareth from Perth asked this excellent question; What tips do I have for helping with the weaker side mohawk transition?
    Transitions are the intermediate skill that tend to cause the most frustration for skaters. Even on the stronger side, there's a lot of disappointment that it's not faster and that there's hesitation at higher speeds (or stumbles and falls).
    For most skaters their weaker side transition is non-existent or feels super clumsy and awkward.
    These transition tips will be useful for anyone learning or wanting to perfect their forwards to backwards transitions.
    Don't underestimate the benefit of doing the movements statically first to gain the fluency and weight distribution before then trying things slowly rolling.
    The Intermediate How to Skate Course mentioned (containing a full transitions lesson) can be tested out for free here;

    For others having trouble with this transition. It was not the little jump that helped me but rather swinging the distant arm around (left arm when turning right or clockwise and right arm when rotating counter clockwise) . You show this on another video that I can’t find right now. But for me it’s the swinging of the arms prior to any foot movement that is key. And as the distant arm comes round approaching 180 or as much as possible to preload a twist in the upper body this allows for the hip to open in order to plant the foot in the opposite direction. Of course the head, shoulders, and upper torso are twisting round together but it’s the distant arm that seals the deal and allows the hips to open.
    You have great videos for learners like me. Always enjoy them. Thanks.

      Yes indeed, the "back arm push" as I can it is the secret to soooo many moves involving backwards or combos of transitions.... I go into this in a lot more detail in all my premier (paid) online courses and trainings. The feet/skates should follow, not lead.

      Yes stopping and steering/maneuvering are more challenging in larger wheels. If you lack the core technical skills then larger wheels will make existing problems (such as pronation) potentially worse, so do check all those things before they become permanent problems.

    Can you do this technique at higher speeds? Whenever i try with more speed i have no time to do a full turn before falling or i just spin out of control

    • @SkatefreshVideos
      @SkatefreshVideos  Před 9 měsíci

      Hi. This is Sergio from Skatefresh Team. This transition has certain limitations when it comes to high speed, and that's because it involves "steps"... You can do it but adding a hop. That is explained in this other video czcams.com/video/Ks60CeRwERM/video.html She's speaking Portuguese in that video but you will be able to understand, nevertheless. One more thing, you really need to be confident skating backward at that speed. For example, if you are confident going forwards at 40 (just to say a number) but going backwards your confidence vanishes at 25, then you must do the transition at 20, not at 40. If you do it at 40, the moment you "switch", your brain experiment a blockage because all of a sudden you are facing something unknown, therefore the fall happens. The speed must be always increased gradually.
