How To Setup A Sound System

- In this video we go through the basics of connecting an analog 10 channel audio mixer (Yamaha MG10) into a powered speaker (Yamaha DXR12). We then connect a microphone (Shure SM58) and headphone cable so we can connect a phone.
Starting with the basics, we like to always verify that we have a good power source at the venue before running any XLR or signal cable. Once the mixer is powered on, we check that the speaker also has a reliable power source.
Once the mixer and the speaker are powered on, we run the signal cable to connect the two. The speaker should be powered off while connecting the signal cable.
Then, you can connect your microphone and input sources, check their volume, and have an awesome event!

Jordan is the best on the Internet talking about this. Most other videos are so convoluted that I can't make heads or tails of them. Jordan's clear, calm delivery is a breath of fresh air. Thank you, sir!
Jordan is a dynamic teacher! You are so thorough for just a simple audio mixer hookup. Thank you!
Your are a good teacher, in fact the best I’ve seen on CZcams so far
Thank you for the kind comment.
and he was great in the movie "Split".
@@kettnercreative Do i have to turn the line and master of the speaker to maximum and control the volume by the master fader???
I agree!
I agree
This is actually the mixer I own....I finally understand it better now
I needed this haha same mixer I got yesterday
Thank you Jordan for this calm , instructive lesson. Just got this mixer and was unsure of some things. Much appreciated !
Best instruction video ever! I just bought my first 6 channel mixer and powered speaker combo. I know nothing about PA systems. Your instruction was clear and highly educational. Thanks
What mixer did you get?
Super great information. I like that you get right to the point. no excess talking. Good Job!
Great teacher! Really organized and easy-to-follow presentation. Thank you!
This is an very well explained video.
As an experienced musician I picked up some really useful tips - thanks
Glad it was helpful!
Great job explaining in detail the finer points in setting up a sound system.
Your last 2 videos were of great help. Thank you for the tutorials, much appreciated.
Glad you like them!
THE BEST explanation of setting up a sound system! Thank you!
first time I've seen a decent demonstration of the difference between dynamic and condenser mics...great video..subbed !
Great job, I love how you don’t assume anything and explain very well!!! 🙏
Great video for a beginner to understand how the sound system is connected!!! Thank you ⭐️
Great video Jordan. I did a couple of events setting up lighting and sound systems and everything you said was on point. I wanted to learn about using the mixer and you explained it very well. I would add bringing enough black tape to tape over any cables exposed to walking areas. Last thing you want is guests tripping over cables and them blaming the audio/video guy. Cheers
This is the most instructive video I watched for a while. Thank you so much for all the informations shared.
Glad you liked it. We try to focus our videos 100% (as much as possible) on the meat and potatoes "what people actually want to know".
Incredibly thorough and patient explanation - thank you for sharing. Subscribed!
This was super useful. Learned a ton. I've been watching a lot of your videos. Thank you so much!
Hey Jordan. Just wanted to let you know that you helped me in successfully connecting my Scarlett 2i2 to my studio monitor (where I was struggling to get the darn thing working). I must admit, I’m not very good when it comes to audio connections. But your video was quite easy to understand. So, “keep on keeping”! More power to you👍
probably the best instructional video I have seen. Having said that i would massively appreciate some clarity on volume/frequency bands use on active speaker/mixing desk
So simply and clearly explained. Thanks, Doug!
Glad it was helpful!
You are a great teacher. Thanks for all your clear and informative videos.
You are very welcome
Wow, calm and straightforward.I've learnt so much
Very calm
Such a perfect explanation, my brain feels so full.
Thanks for the information. This explains the problems I've been having with the same mixer and condenser mic setup. Problem resolved. Thanks.
i wish i'd seen this video many years ago. this is clear, concise, instructive and i can barely wait 'til i apply what i've learned to my setup. thank you!
Very easy way to understand how to use mixer and those input and output. Thanks for the simple tricks.!!!
Excellent summary. Good pace and no irrelevant information.
Glad you enjoyed it!

Thank you for this video, you made it clear and easy to understand, I really appreciate it. :)
Happy to help
Well done video. Instead of using an extension cord to determine if you have power, get an outlet tester for about $10. Then you will know that you also have ground. Very important for a sound system.
When discussing volume and gain, you recommend using the volume until you can't get any more, then adding gain to compensate. I would suggest setting the gain to achieve unity level before turning the volume up at all. If your mixer has a pfl switch, enact that and use the meters to see what your incoming level is. Set that as close as possible to unity, then (and only then) set your volume to an appropriate level.
every little bit of information has been explained, thanks bud
I do have mg12xu and ago6. Learned a lot from ur videos. Understood well. Thanks much, from philippines.

Thanks for helping me get sound from my MG10 to a Powered Speaker using my phone!! Now I need to know how to get sound from a laptop instead of a phone.
I'd love to see a similar video that includes the use of an audio interface and a headphone amp while recording.

Before I really knew what I was doing when it came to mixer boards, I always related "GAIN" to volume, but later realized its actually "Signal" and not volume. Explains alot when your trying to fix feedback lol ;)
