Chasing big far north trev's off the sand - Ya gotta love it when a plan comes together...

  • After a long 15hr day in the boat the previous day, we decided to give our bodies a rest and headed off to target big trev's off the sand in the local Harbour. It was a beautiful day with sun shining and crystal clear waters (which can make surfcasting a little difficult) but this was going to be more a lay day, a fun day so we made trevally the target species knowing the sunlight and clear waters wouldn't matter to them.
    The plan came together well and we even landed a beauty in the late arvo when we decided to come back down to finish the day off where it started.
    Thanks for watching guys and don't forget to subscribe and hit the notification bell, which lets you know when I have dropped a new video for you guys.
    Cheers for all the support you've given me over the year and hope yourselves have had some fun Reel Kiwi Fishing adventures over the year.
    Have a Merry Xmas and a safe new year

    Great video mate. Nice to see a Kiwi, beach fishing with a multiplier reel, lovely reels to cast if you can master the technique. Also glad to see the fish you release are not dragged along the sand, sadly like so many other fisherman do. Really looking forward to returning to your beautiful country for January and February next year. I’m really looking forward to some great surf fishing as in previous years. Keep producing great videos mate, they are always a good distraction for the cold months back in Blighty. Tight lines 😎🎣

    NewZealand is such a very nice place to enjoy fishing
    You should make some videos about how you cook the fish that you catch.

      Hi ms4740
      That it is 👍 my catch and cook would be a bit of a boring one as I just have it one way - lightly coated in flour and cooked in butter. Pea does a few different things especially when we catch a few reefies out on the boat - I'll try see if maybe one day he'll do a couple vids (but he's very impatient)

      There's plenty of places to flick a bait from Doubtless bay all the way up to Spirts and 90mile. This is in the Ranagunu Harbour.

    jason,you seem to use a short trace to your hook,do you find you get more fish like that or is it to prevent tangles

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Hi dk7563
      I've always used it like that - it catches fish and doesn't tangle. I feel the longer the trace the more play it has for fish to take the bait unnoticed and also if it's to close to the sinker it may get caught up? but I haven't tried a longer trace so can't comment to much on them. Mine would roughly be 20-25cm long.

      Not sure if it's the old adage the bigger the current the bigger the trace?? I've found here in the Kaipara that when the current drops off I'll get more fish on a dropper rig but when the current is hard I'll get way more on a running rig!

    How are you finding the Flitesurf over the T-rex? or a surf 8k? My first reel baby Jarvis Walker 8000 finally carked it lol. Just wondering if the price increase is worth it.

    • @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing
      @Reel-Kiwi-Fishing  Před 7 měsíci +3

      Hi wf - the Flite surf is new to me so only used it a handful of times. It is the top of the range but all 3 reels are great.
      - The 8K is a purposely built surf reel having a slower oscillation and long-cast spool which helps to lay the line pretty much perfectly on the spool for better distance casting. It is equal drag to the new Flite surf at 18kg so both have plenty of grunt. It is the heaviest of the 3 and it also has a slight twist through the stem when winding under load that some don't like but over all it is a great surfcasting reel.
      - The T-Rex is a step up from the 8K being lighter - all 3 have the quick drag system which is great not having to turn the knob about 15 times before it engages (and looks sexy in black and big handle knob) 12kilo of drag which is still plenty for surfcasting. Has no twist through the stem.
      - The Flite surf is new to the range. It has a super slow oscillation so nice line lay on the spool (which is a standard spool) it has a carbon body and rotor and has an ultra light weight spool so this thing is super light and is the lightest out of all 3. Very smooth to wind with no twist through the stem.
      Hope that helps and tight lines

      Wicked advice😊 I was completely sold on the flitesurf only because it's new😅... Might have to look further into the other options too now. I will pop into H&F and have a feel of them. Thanks for your time!

      Hi MR
      We try to fish for the future so let go fish in between. If you take every fish you catch from ones spot you could potentially fish it out. Also we like to release for others to be able to come out and catch fish as well. Put one in the bin let one go and don't catch your limit but limit your catch for our future fishing - this will able your kids and your kids kids to be able to come out and still catch fish like we did when we fished.

      @@Reel-Kiwi-Fishing When you caught the Trev you released, I'd thought, 'what are the chances' that the Trev had found your hook and bait that fateful day. Millions to one? Maybe billions to one. In any event, as you reeled it in, I felt a tinge of sadness for that fish, given the odds, ie what bad luck(for the fish).
      As a fisherman who has caught many, kept many, and released many...it was as though my feelings were somehow meaningful, when you released it. Only keeping what you need. That's great.
