Big snapper & reffies on softbait - a fun Reel Kiwi Fishing adventure off Houhora to Henderson's

- An epic day softbaiting in the far north from Houhora to Henderson's....
When it comes to softbaiting I'm no pro at it, but over the past few years it's become one of my most fun techniques to do while on my 6-7day far north annual fishing trip I do 2-3 times every year. Stevo and I have had some pretty epic big snapper catches and the great thing is we're not racing all over the ocean to try and find workups to do it. The fish are just there and there in good numbers most times. The deep water softbaiting has taken the priority but the last couple trips Stevo and I have been having fun flicking into the wash.
This trip was a little harder fishing wise due to the constant wind hounding us. That's why I love to base my self at the Top 10 in Whatuwhiwhi. Not only does it give us so many options to fish, it also gives us a spot to fish land or sea no matter what way the wind blows. Even when she's blowing quite strong we have the back up of 2-3 Harbours to fish or even the west coast.
We basically only had the one day this time where the wind allowed us to fish where we wanted out wide or in the shallows. Making use of that weather window we left the cabin around 5am and made our way to Houhora heads where we launched the little Osprey just as the sun crawled it's way out of bed and started rising over the camel. Stevo picked up the very first snap on his very first cast at a wash rock we like to start our little Reel kiwi fishing adventure at when we head out for a softbait - it stayed pretty fishy the whole day from then and we even picked up a few tasty reefies.....
A fun day out on the water softbaiting in the north with a mate, a few fish caught and released and a nice mixed bin at the end of the day - you can't ask for much more than that 😎
