A hard start to our fishing in the north - lots of wind and not much fish.....

  • Most times our surfcasting spot produces quite well for us, but it makes it difficult to fish it with a 20-25knt onshore wind. Normally we stay put and fish it through to the half tide in, and I think we may have picked up a couple fish if we stayed put but we gave up shortly after dark. With out tails between our legs we decided to try a morning tiki set the next day to at least pick up a few fish. Although catching a couple for the bin the start of our trip wasn't very fishy.

Which rod in the okuma surf rods do you reckon is best for distance?
Always enjoy your videos, good honest down to earth kiwi fishing.

Cheers for the kind words p5649 - it's a hard one to choose as I haven't fished them all...
The Kotare is at the top of the range so you would have to say it would be hard to beat, this is a more serious high performance rod so you do have to take a bit more care of it.
When it comes to distance casting there are a few things that all play a part from the rod, reel, line, rig and the most portent of all the technique.
I can just about cast as far as the Kotare with my 10ft rock rod which comes more down to my line and technique - as they say practice, practice, practice.....

      Hi bw8037
Yep it's the new Okuma Soul Surf - this one is 13'6 and runs LR guides and also a sliding reel seat. This allows the rod to be more personalised and can run a spin or OH reel...

If you were to choose between the rods you set up, which one would you go for as a long term ownership.

The all rounder would be the new MC Nano - it has the sliding reel seat as well but if it had LR guides would be close to perfect. It is a little more chunky than the Kotare and heavier. The Kotare is super light with a extra fast taper. Not a lot in the way of EVA grip etc on the Kotare but that's why it's a super thin and light blank.
The Kotare is more a high end profile rod so needs to be looked after more than the MC.
Hope that helps as it still comes down to personal preference.

      Hi jp7084
I just run a old GoPro in my pocket - the main things that go wrong with it is the mic's they don't like that twisting and being bent. After awhile they start to cut out then stop working.
