Now this is what you call interesting Alpina made some really cool unique versions of existing 3 series Non M engines before the BMWs turbo era. I think this 3.4l is based off of the M54B30 a nice middle ground between a 330 and M3. Love it

This 3.4 is actually based on the previous generation M52 engine (to be precise, the US-market S52 3.2 version). It has bigger diameter pistons, more agressive camshafts, headwork and a specific intake manifold. The only single-VANOS engine ever fitted to an E46!
