Thank you Conan, for letting Mel speak without interruption. You have a very respectful interview style. Very entertaining. Great history.
Violet Crush
Both Conan & Brooks are extremely intelligent.
@@shadfourfuck you im on day 4
I had no idea Mel Brooks is a dumb Jew (for thinking gentiles are inferior)
Had me laughing from the start:
Conan: "This is a dream for me"
Mel: "Wake up!"
Just the best! Conan you are great in this interview! Such a gem of an interview with Mel Brooks!
@@dodilove1 I can't agree more. Conan has always been such a genuine and self-effacing guy, but he truly is very intelligent and perceptive in his interviews. He seems to have slipped away from the top stage, less due to his own failing than the whims of a network hierarchy and a dumbed down audience. I have missed seeing more and more as his shows went to 30 minutes, now only streaming. Listening to Mel Brooks here was also the most enjoyable time I've ever seen him and I can't help but think Conan was a big factor...Another top notch interviewer who's stepped back from prominence is Bob Costas. Both of them brought ample smarts, sincerity and preparation to their interviews...
Some people just can't not be funny
Yes. And then Conan misunderstood it and told Brooks to wake up.
I was in WW 2!
So was I, didn’t see you there.
Classic Mel Brooks, funniest man ever. Still sharp as a tack in his 90’s
This was an hour really well spent. Thank you Conan for giving us a chance to see Mel in such a chill setting.
What makes this seem like an hour well spent was the two hours spent watching it,
Mel's memories are so vivid and he's a wonderful storyteller.
Yes he is. He should try directing.
@@lynnturman8157 or screenwriting..
How could there possibly be a better guest than Mel
@@absentiabenertia5204 I think this guy could have a future in film making, if he would dedicate himself to it.
So much comedic talent in the comment section. Such a waste.
Just sat poolside smoking weed with my 74 yr old father (Vietnam vet), laughing extremely hard watching this whole thing with minimal pee breaks. Thank you to you both for getting together to do such a fantastic interview.
-HOW YOU DARE? WHERE'S MEL BROOKS?
-I'm here
-I WAS IN WW2?
-I was in WW2, I didn't see you there
Marcelo Kuroi LOL
I have watched this 20 times. Please, if at all possible, have Mr. Mel Brooks on your podcast. I love you both.
I was 5 when I saw "Blazing Saddles" for the first time. I didn't remember much of it, but I was surprised when I saw the klansmen in Fried Green Tomatoes. Their robes were wrong, because they were missing "Have a Nice Day."
I was 6 when I watched Spaceballs for the first time. Both movies were watched in my living room and they were part of some family movie night.
I was 10 when I watched "Robin Hood: Men in Tights." I was in a hotel room in North Carolina attending a family reunion.
I was 12 when I watched "Young Frankenstein." I was home from school, sick, and I felt like I was going to laugh until I died.
I can't tell you what I did last week.
That's the power of Mel Brooks.
That was a beautiful homage.
There was a VHS copy of Spaceballs at my grandparents' house that I watched endlessly as little kid during the long summer days I spent there while they were keeping until my parents got off work. So many times that I memorized every line of that movie. Also had Monty Python's Holy Grail and I similarly committed that one to memory as well :-)
Short term vs long term
You are absolutely right! I remember the exact setting of where I was when I watched Mel's movies for the first time. Thank God my father has such a great taste in comedy or else I would have never discovered Mel Brooks or the Marx brothers. They don't make em like they used to.
"You've said.. profoundly, without realizing - because you're not that smart..."
Lol! Mel is hilarious without even trying. 19:44.
I think I can honestly listen to Mel Brooks talk about anything forever.
Patrick Farrell He just has one of those voices man.
There’s a humbleness and the perfect amount of cockiness.
I think I've watched the director's commentary on Blazing Saddles almost as much as the actual film. His stories about Madeline Kahn and Richard Pryor are awesome.
Brilliance is as brilliance does. Sorry for the cliche
i would pay good money to spend a day with mel brooks, he could ramble off a recipe for cookies and i would hang on every single word.
Don't know what to add that many, many haven't said about this cinematic genius.
For as old as he is to have a memory like an encyclopedia is just phenominal.
Mel yer one of a kind.
Mel Brooks has such a prodigious memory! And truly intellectual. What a great oral history. Tip o' the hat to Conan.
conan should return to this, he would become even better at simply by doing it more. Interviewing people is an incredible artform
elchasai Now that Charlie Rose has been booted....this is much better.
Hes got a podcast now!!!
He’s got a podcast but I wish it was 2 hrs long like this one
1:02:22 Watch for Conan's expression before the camera cut.
1:02:36 They cut before Mel gets his hand up, and you hear a couple sniffs.
1:02:42 Conan's micro-expression says a lot.
@@amandatan9092 I think you got your timestamps wrong.
One word that is seldom used to describe Mel Brooks is "gentleman", but BOY, is he EVER! He always seems like a guy you could walk up to an be greeted as a friend. A CRAZY friend, but a good buddy, nevertheless. He is a national treasure.
I just watched a "documentary" with him a week ago, either on Hulu or Netflix. Dated 2019 I think. Mel had driven his car to a local supermarket to pick up a few things for dinner later with his interviewer and Carl Reiner. The interviewer accompanied him of course.
Some lady came up to Mel and interrupted everything and just did what we'd all do, probably - and thanked him profusely for all the fun. He wasn't pissed, or short, or impatient - he accepted her gratitude graciously, and even though that's happened countless thousands of times to him, I'm sure, you could tell he still was genuinely glad to be appreciated for what he's given us. The lady finally saundered off and Mel got back to his shopping...
Aside from everything else I thought it particularly great that he's still driving his own car and hitting the supermarket - at 93.
Mel's memory is most definitely exceptional. Even as a 14 year-old-boy he knew all of the words to a play he wasn't even in, and then later he just remembers everything, including the details of meals. Astonishing.
He's on cocaine.
We all have to realize he has been telling this entertaining stories going on 80 years.🥰🥰
Mel's detailed memory for names & places is astounding!
thats old school Hollywood for ya.
Hope mel lives to be the thousand year old man
*two thousand year old man
@@triple7marc 94 years old atm ^^
@@DrumL3000 He made it through covid?! That's so reassuring.
I feel as if that character started with his first acting job at 14 years old.
Still going strong!
After all these years, he's still sharp. I hope he gets to do some kind of project before he passes on. Something original too. He might be old but damn, he's got it together.
Lance Goodthrust he was executive producer on the movie year one Which was hilarious
And it's the most offensive movie ever
I LOVE offensive movies. It mean they're doing it right!
There's just something in the way he says "There was a place on Coney Island" that forces you to listen in silence.
"The Producers" is my favourite film ever.

Conan is a class act, intelligent and can think on the fly. A lot of people would have kept pushing.
@@Despond agree mell got shook up and he moved to another topic
The little twinge of Conan's eyebrow killed me, you can feel the atmosphere in the moment just by knowing what he saw
I always come back to this video whenever I have to do lesson plans and just want to listen to something good in the background. I love these two.
I only intended on watching a few minutes of this. Couldn't stop until the end. Great great stuff. There's not much better than listening a true artist talk about their craft. Love Mel Brooks.
Use j in in iujbko. I just don’t. Yea coucufudufudududududuiiiiiiiifu we’re tatèee
Best interview I've seen in a LOOOONG time, and I'm addicted to interviews/talk shows.
H byx basecmangtt yiv
ObscureArts80 Look for the interview with Mel and Dick Cavett, Mr Claw.
Conan is pretty great when he speaks seriously. Check out the Ken Burns and Simpsons interviews.
I AM IRONCLAW! I've been powering thru Craig ferguson episodes
Conan O'Brien is a great interviewer such a intellectual, Mel Brooks still funny as ever
Thanks Team Coco for making this happen. It's great to see Conan interact with one of his childhood heroes
Conan really seems like he's in his element here. Funny cause he is so goofy in his talk show; he mellows out into this cool alter ego and shows his intelligence, wit and appreciation for comedians like Mel Brooks and comedy itself.
At the end of this incredible interview I could not believe it was almost 180 minutes long it seemed like 20 minutes time went by so fast mr. Brooks is an incredible storyteller and his wit Candor and charm is amazing and the chemistry between him and Conan is incredible and Conan really is a great interviewer he always makes people feel very comfortable with him this was just so awesome!
Conan should really do these more regularly.
But how many Mel Brookses are there?
I would watch them talk every week, as a standard show.
Man, Mr Brooks has worked with them all, seen it all...what a titan of industry this man is.
only one. Don Rickles
Conan really shines without an audience in front of him. I've loved Conan since I first saw his legendary remote when he went to Houston to watch his show that came on at like 2:45. His visit to 1860s baseball, going to Ireland, and driving people during a transit strike. I know that he's a family man and he shouldn't be apart from them. But he's better than Johnny Carson when he takes us to another country or takes us to something we may have heard about. These interviews are also awesome. Basically, Conan is best without an audience. We love him, but he doesn't need us and I hope he continues the remotes but I would also sit and watch these shows with glee.
HueyRocks23 I agree that Conan is incredible in his remote segments. He is so funny and creative with those. Besides Carson and Letterman, he is my favorite late night host.
When I first started watching these "Serious Jibber-Jabber" shows, I knew Conan would eventually go to long form. He loves it. I'm so happy Conan, Sona, and Matt have been doing Conan O'Brien Needs a Friend.
Conan’s such a master interviewer. Just let’s the legend talk.
This was inspiring, This man is one of the greats and has that quick wit, strong intelligence that you just don't see anymore and at his age, he's as snappy as ever. It's as if he's not even aging. Please God, let this man live forever, world needs more like him.
lmao when mel brooks yells at the camera guy for switching over so much. Such a brilliant and funny man who never once came off as hateful with all his blunt and risque humor
Love you Mr. Brooks, you made my dear father, who has passed away, and I laugh for decades. Now my 9 year old is laughing with me. Thank you for sharing your humor with the world.
I really enjoy watching 2 famous people I like, enjoying talking to each other casually.
A fantastic interview; I only wish it were another hour or two longer! I always tell people I was named after Mel Brooks; if they don't know who he is, I tell them I'm offended.
The expression on Conan's face is one of awe, the awe of a small child in the presence of his hero.
Mel's memory is astounding. The details from 50 years ago are simply amazing.
I didn't know Conan was doing this. It's pretty cool, similar to inside the actors studio.
I like it better because it's between peers, instead of an academician.
It is heartbreaking when Anne Bancroft is brought up. It is obvious that he still carries the weight of her death.
Richard Brand
Anne Bancroft had a great sense of humor.
Mel & Anne was a dynamic loving couple.
@@Rudydog65 ... Did you have a stroke?
@@LadyJ_88 Minor one only. Thanks for your concern.
One of the finest interviews I've ever seen on the internet. Conan is a great host, he has the perfect questions and his demeanor puts his guest into the comfort zone. Mel is a true legend and so enjoyable, he had me laughing over and over again. I was looking for election news and found the best hour on the internet. Lets do it again, real soon.
Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein , The Producers and married to Anne Bancroft...Team Coco, another great interview.
Mel Brooks interviews are the best because he has met everyone in show business from the past and present and has so many great stories!
Damn. Mel Brooks and Conan O'Brien. Can't beat that combo.
This is one of the best interviews I've watched/listened to ever. Period. Absolutely fantastic discussion, great vibe, great chemistry. Could listen all day long. Conan is a great host and Mel Brooks has just all the coolest stories. LOVE it. Thanks for doing these! Watched every episode of Serious Jibber-Jabber. Can't wait for the next installment.
Just stumbled onto the Jibber-Jabber but I'm definitely hooked...
Spaceballs: The most underrated comedy movie of all time, IMO.
He is so honest, funny, and smart. And he is something that nobody else can ever be. He is so Mel Brooks!
This came up on auto play, I really didn't want to spend almost an hour and a half watching a video, but I was so entranced I had to watch the whole thing
This is why television will lose in the end, no editing just talking, no countdowns to commercials, brilliant. But it also takes a brilliant story teller like Mel Brooks. Wonderful. Kudos too to Conan and his crew. Conan is much better this way than in a TV show setting.
Exactly. All the late night talk shows pander to a mob overlaid with a creepy laugh track interspersed with commercials.
can we all agree that mel brooks is the most affable human being on this planet?
Man the bit about how he wants to go out with the "Mannie guy" had me laughing so hard hahahaha
There will never be another Mel Brooks. He is on in Million
been watching mel brooks movies since i was a little girl. I'm so grateful my dad let my siblings and me watch his stuff. I even bought the blu ray set!
Before I die, I'd love to meet him
Conan, wonderful job. You asked all the right questions and Mel just hit them out of the park. Mel and Carl both -- what treasures.
Great interview... it can't be overstated how important a role this man has played in entertainment. People who don't even like his movies have undoubtedly enjoyed something that was directly influenced by his work..
Not my mom
Thankfully Mel Brooks is still with us as I write this. He was 87 when this was recorded and he seems 40 years younger at least. His memory and his life stories are a marvel to behold and celebrate. Conan's Serious Jibber-Jabber series is always good, but this is one of the greats. Not only for the legendary guest, but for how Conan came prepared and so sensitively handled the interview. This was such a great treat and an event where everyone, the guest, the host and the audience all walk away better. Bravo!
I went on a business vacation from SF to Napa, CA. All of the staff on the bus to wine country were white or Asian. We had a tremendously nice black gentleman as our bus driver, but we didn't know that immediately. The "In-bus movie" was Blazing Saddles and everyone was laughing until the first N-word. Then the bus went silent. In the stillness the wonderful bus driver said "What? That was funny!" and everyone erupted in laughter.
This was the best interview I’ve seen Conan do because he’s not “on” acting like an idiot - he’s a smart well educated guy and you get to see it here.
Another great one is with the Simpsons cast. Theyre all friends so its very genuine.
Only other one where he is also just himself.
I always thought this is exactly what Conan needed to do on his Tonight Show. Carson could do this; Leno couldn't, and it's what the show needed again. But Conan went full goofball instead.
That’s a good observation, I actually remember sort of noticing that at the time with Conan when he moved up to the top spot to Leno’s place, that Conan wasn’t what he used to be on his old show and that hadn’t evolved into something better or perhaps say more authentic like he’s able to do here or on his podcast. Instead he was kinda trying to be the mainstream guy more like what he thought that was supposed to be (based on Carson, Letterman, Leno) and it wasn’t the same. I can see why it didn’t work out honestly, not that I thought Leno was better obviously, but it wasn’t quite what I’d hoped it be. But of course he should’ve been given more time and either way Leno’s hanging around in the corners and everything else was not cool and quite shady, but anyway.
Mel Brooks never fails to make me laugh my ass off. His memory is astounding. Get Mel Brooks back on.
wow...this was incredible..Mel Brooks is an amazing human being and great job to Conan, what a great interview.
This was the best thing I've seen on the net in a long time.
I've... I've never heard Mel Brooks drop the f-bomb before!
+Dariusz Sobotka And made it funny at that :-P
I'm a little late here, but listen to the 2000 year old man, and look for the track the 8th wonder of the world. He drops the f bomb like 4 times in a row. Funny stuff.
The older you get the less of of a damn you give
Blame it on Conan.
Guys....I think it's sarcasm
The 80 minutes went by so fast it was a crime...somebody stole the damn clock! Truly one of the best interviews I've ever seen and it was so enjoyable learning about Mel's youth and everything he went through. It was just so funny even the serious stuff he managed to look at the humorous side of life you actually learn something by listening to him and laugh at the same time which is rare in today's world and Conan I believe was the perfect person to interview him. Conan has an incredible depth of knowledge which even impressed Mr. Brooks, and the reverence he holds him in really came through here just such a super super interview and they also have great chemistry and admiration for each other.
Absolutely a fantastic interview! Thank you from Finland. Please don't nuke us!
+Hakimagora lol
Why would we nuke you?!...You're already Finish!...Sorry, I couldn't resist:)
That’s very kind of you, but everyone must be nuked, sorry.
You're a far too white a country to be nuked by this administration.
KUDOS CONAN..Definitely top 4 late nighters. I truly hope you are recognized as one of the greatest late nighters. Considering history, the road was paved for you by the Carson, the Letterman's, & so on. But, You went a head and created a few detours just for fun. You're the greatest imo.
Get a room you two.
"I'm a brilliant and skilled performer!"
Not many people can say that and get away with it. Mel Brooks is one in a million.
sorry for digging this up, but certainly rarer than that :)
that was one of the best interviews i've ever seen. period.
10yrs later I’m just seeing this for the first time. Such a great interview!
What an amazing man Mel Brooks is. I'll never leave it this long again to check out who is behind the entertainment that I enjoy. This man not only has an incredible talent, but an enviable memory. This is certainly up there with the very best!!!
It's great to know Mel Brooks is still doing well for his age.
I will always remember when I first watched History of the World Part 1. I was a strange child who actually loved history class, and was flipping through that old Comcast On Demand menu and loved watching history channel documentaries. I saw that movie and didn't read the description but assumed it was actually a real historical documentary. I figured out pretty quickly that it wasn't but just laughed hysterically the entire film. I remember being sorely dissapointed that there was no part 2.
My dad worked at Horn & Hardart.......until 1948 when he enlisted in the marines. Told me about eating the scraps that the cooks would slide into a pile for him and his buddy. They were workers so got that appreciation.
Honestly, never been a big Conan fan but he was just superb in this setting. Intelligent questions, obviously had done his homework and unlike soooo many others, knows when to shut the hell up and let his guest talk. Outstanding!
What an incredible memory. I wish I was Manny.
Conan, I love these clips; they're in the spirit of the old Dick Cavett programs, where we really get to know the guest(s) through in-depth questions from a true fan, and not the fast food, disposable Bic lighter-like interviews we get on late night shows or daytime TV. Refreshing!
OK we need WAAYYY more of this! Seriously. Interviewing is a subtle art. Conan needs to take over for Terry Gross when she retires.
Mel made me laugh and smile when I was a kid and even now he just kills me with laughter. Appreciate the upload a lot. .Thank you.
Thank you very much Team Coco for this interview. Mel Brooks makes my most favorite movies in the world!!
Fucking love Mel. He's a huge influence on my humor and I've loved his best work since I was a kid. Thanks, Conan! You conducted awesomely.
God, I love that man. Could never get tired of listening to Mel Brooks.
'Let's scare the shit out of the audience' perfect!
"That's incredible, I've got the same combination on my luggage!" - Mel Brooks (Spaceballs) [1987]
Mel Brooks is just an amazing human being. Thank you Conan for doing this- this interview was really awesome.
This is one of my favorites interviews in the internet. I come back to it frequently.
Conan hasn't aged in, like, 15 years.
I'm trying to imagine the Mel Brooks - Sid Caesar movies that could have been made in the 1950s.
O'brien was such an amazing surprise. Great listener, so humble yet emotionally involved and prepared. Brooks is the God of comics. So generous
Wow, that was the quickest hour and twenty minutes I've ever lived through. What a great interview with the real king of comedy--Mel Brooks!
Mel is the man! His movies still hold up today.
Hearing Mel tell the story of getting his first big laugh is amazing and inspiring. Only Conan can bring us this level of legendary insight into entertainment history.
Mel's such a good sport. He's SO adorable
I am so grateful that my life has been graced with Mel Brooks.
Mel Brooks is one of the greatest Jewish comedians/directors ever. His films are classics.

This interview with Mr. Brooks was the best. The long form format is such a rewarding experience for us and for you I’m sure. The stories of the old days in the business give us a perspective that is pure gold.

For all the jokes, you can tell how wel Mel knows his craft. A true master.
he has to have a photographic memory to have that kind of recall at his age. wow
