  • How To Treat Powdery Mildew.
    Powdery mildew is a fungal disease that is prevalent in warm, dry weather, and is one of the most common and easily recognised plant diseases. Almost no type of plant is immune, although some are more susceptible than others. Powdery mildew looks like powdery splotches of white or grey which appears on the leaves and stems of plants. Although it affects a great number of plants, the different powdery mildew fungi are host specific, meaning each of the mildew fungi infects only specific plants. Thus, the powdery mildew on your lilacs will not spread to your grapes or roses, for example.
    So I researched 3 different treatments and decided to do a 10 day trial. The first method I tried was a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, mild hand soap, vegetable oil and water all mixed together. I am delighted to report that after daily spraying for 10 days, all the powdery mildew has gone, and the honeysuckle leaves are once again glossy, shiny and disease free, so I can highly recommend this method of treatment.
    In this video I take you through the whole process and the 10 day trial. I also explain the other 2 methods I would have tried if the first had been unsuccessful.

    Just an update: success. Thank you for this. I treated my plant just 5 times using the first treatment and the fungus has gone. I was away so couldn’t treat the full 10 days.
    My honeysuckle has never looked so happy. It’s gone crazy, even spilling over into my neighbours garden over the fence.
    I’m going to try this on my privet hedge which has been suffering for a couple of years with mildew. Ta very much.

      Oh Sam I am so pleased!! I don’t think you even need 10 days (as you found out), it’s just that I’d decided to film for 10 days as my experiment. It works doesn’t it!!! Success!! 🩷

      Hi there Paul and thank you, glad if I can help. This did work for me, but in the end I moved my honeysuckle because our planter got waterlogged and we had to empty it out completely and put more drainage holes in. This does work though. Hope you’re having a great week ♥️

    The outtakes are so fun. 👋🏻 Hi Richard 👋🏻 I have a honeysuckle vine that occasionally gets PM and have used straight skim milk on it it. I read somewhere that milk is one of the remedies to try.(I don’t drink milk these days but didn’t want to waste any of it so I bought skim so I could drink the remainder rather than throw it out). 🥛

      Hello there, what a good idea with the milk!!! Yes I think I will try that next time. I’m pleased to say I haven’t had any powdery mildew to deal with this year. Maybe it’s all to do with humidity I think, and this year it’s just been really dry. I must do the outtakes again, there are usually quite a lot of them 🤣🥰

    Firstly, may I say what a soothing voice you have and secondly your dresses are fab.
    I’ve been struggling to keep my Honey suckle from the ravages of fungus for nearly 15 years. Every year it looks promising lush and green, then just as the flowers appear it starts dying at a rapid rate, till only a straggly few stems remain.
    I’ve tried your formula many times before to no avail.
    However, I’ve used washing up liquid instead of hand wash and treated them fortnightly only not daily.
    I am going to use your recipe and method and hope for the best.
    Thank you very much for this video.
    BTW, have seen the the amount of chemicals in hand washes and shampoos. No wonder it works.

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  Před rokem

      Hello there Sam, and thank you for such lovely comments 😊 has your honeysuckle been in the same planting space for all the 15 years? If so I think I’d be tempted to try moving it, maybe cutting it right down and starting again? I don’t know if that would help but it might just be a struggle for it all the time wherever you have it? I have moved mine since this video but that was because the planter it was in got completely waterlogged so I had to empty it all out and drill new drainage holes. The honeysuckle is now in the opposite corner, it’s not grown very much but it hasn’t had the mildew in the new spot. It’s all trial and error isn’t it? I hope you’re having a great first weekend of summer ♥️

    • @samcohen1625
      @samcohen1625 Před rokem

      Yes it’s been in the same place for 15 years and I’ve cut it right back with the intention of getting rid of it, but it came back healthier till the fungus took hold again.
      Unfortunately it’s base is too large and established to be moved easily.
      It’s on a north south oriented fence so it get shade and sunshine.
      I heard that feeding and watering them well helps.
      One last ditched attempt this year for me.
      This morning it looked really well and healthy with all this heat.
      Have a wonderful w/e.
      BTW is that a London accent you have?

    • @TheEnthusiasticGardener
      @TheEnthusiasticGardener  Před rokem

      @samcohen1625 it sounds like if you did try and move it, you’d lose it as it’s so well established Sam. Maybe like you say, a good feed will do it good. Sometimes though I think a plant has lived it’s lifespan and time to get something new. I’m sure you’ll decide. Yes, I guess I have a London accent 😆 I’m about 30 miles east of the City of London, in Essex on the south east coast of England. Where are you? Hope you’ve had a great weekend.
