I used these two recipes that I found online for what was probably late blight on my tomatoes: 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp vegetable oil, and 1 tsp mild dishsoap for 1 liter of water, and a few drops of iodine mixed in 47/60 low fat milk and water. I alternated between these two, one spraying a week for each, and it worked!
They have the 1/2 gallon pump sprayer at dollar general for $4, and about $6 at Walmart if you can’t/don’t want to carry a whole gallon.

@@1-SMILE-SHINE I wasn’t saying it’s cheaper. The 1/2 gallon is lighter for people who don’t want to/can’t carry the bigger one.
I've been spraying my plants with epsom/sea salt and fulvic acid lately. I find it keeps the leaves very healthy by just giving it the trace minerals it needs. Fulvic is supposed to help with nutrient uptake into growth tips.
I also use Dr. Bronners as a surfacant. I think that helps prevent PM/Blight as well. Cause of pH, like you said.

If you someone who works in a grocery store or any place that makes cakes with icing-the icing buckets are perfect for container gardening. You should be able to get those for free. I've used 5 gallon buckets and mop buckets before but never thought of the kitty litter ones. I have a cat and have thrown so many away 🤦♀️
I grow brandy wine tomatoes. Guess what no blight. And they still are producing. Michigan zone 5.
Ooh I'm trying this in England...planted them out so late though as weather has been so awful here.. probably none will develop in time at this rate- I didn't realise how long they needed!

I'm a pretty green gardener so I'd never heard of these 3 homemade sprays. Definitely not the aspirin spray. Something to remember for the coming season - I'm in the Southern hemisphere so spring has sprung. I'm just waiting for the last frost date to make it's visit.
I don't get more than 2 seasons out of "cheap" sprayers.. and generally they only carry them in big box stores for 2-3 years and cant get replacement parts

Luke, is the 2 tsps of calcium magnesium citrate added to 1 gallon of water? Also how about a mixure of hydrogen peroxide and water? Thanks Luke, great video.

Luke could you use Dr. Bonners soap instead of dish soap? The calcium nitrate was the best thing I have heard so far. Thank you so much.
I will use the dr bonners soap givern it is free of toxins and biodegradable. And works in the same way as a dish soap would, by helping the mixture to stick to the leaves

Just an FYI. while it may be advantageous, for absorption purposes, to apply foliar treatments @ certain times of day, the belief that water applied to foliage will act as mini magnifying glasses & burn the leaves has been proven to be a myth by numerous university studies.
Maybe. I noticed water burned leaves of bush beans and broccoli this year. The broccoli was under bug netting and gave about a 3 shade factor. I think if the temp from sun is a real scorcher it can burn.
Sun scorch can happen if it's too hot for a given plant, especially if the plant needs water. Misting the plant will actually help to prevent scorch by cooling it down in the heat of the day (per Jim Putnam of Horttube who's been a garden professional some 37 years).

Would this help blight on fruit trees also?
I suspect that someone has already asked this. I have used the baking soda treatment for years with pretty good success. Would combining two or even all three of these methods into one spray have any benefit?

What about the 3 tablespoons of vegetable oil you used to use with the baking soda mix?
That is entirely optional and can help the spray further stick on the leaf but I have found it to not be 100% necessary over the years.

What about neem oil? I used to use baking soda but neem oil seems to help too. Still think baking soda may be stronger

I've been using the milk this year and it worked great for powdery mildew but we just had 6 days of overcast/rainy days and now all of a sudden my cucumber and squash plants have like black mold looking spots all on the stems and underside of leaves and plants are declining a bit. I see some darker grey looking mold here or there that looks different than pm. Anyone have any ideas on what this is?
Most people say the aspirin has to be uncoated or it will gum up the sprayer. I have not been able to find uncoated here in Canada, anywhere. Any thoughts on whether they need to be uncoated?

Am wondering about the frequency for all of this? Are you using all 3, all summer? Once a week? It seems like you could use 1 & 2 at the same time, or 2 & 3, but not 1 & 3?

He's giving us 3 different options. The first 2 work better for blight, but could also work for powdery mildew. The third one works well for powdery mildew, but could also help with blight. I would just pick one and see if it helps after a couple weeks of using it. Then you can switch to a different one if you feel you need to.
What about the baking soda, oil and a few drops of soap? You made that video, years back. Should I not do that method?

I looked online and they all have Vit D. Does your calcium magnesium citrate also have Vit D?
If not, what brand do you use?
I just happened to screen shot when he was holding the bottle for my own reference. The brand he has is - Solgar. And yes it has vitamin D3.

How much water did u use with the 2 tsp? I have had really bad blight on tomatoes, squash....also powdery mildew on my nine bark shrub...the past couple yrs has been bad....

So can you put all 4 items into a single spray?
If you added an asprin, 1-2 Tbs of baking soda & Magnesium citrate all in the 1 gal of water, you would concentrate of solution by 3x because you added all 3 items that Luke said to add each to 1 gal of water.
My question to you is, why would you think of doing that? There's no benefit, but you would probably kill your plants.
It sounds like you would be creating a hot mess, to me. Lol

Probably, since baking soda is also powdered.
It could be worth a shot, I don't see how it could hurt!
@@MIgardener I’m going to do an experiment and see how it goes. There’s not much to lose because as you mentioned, powdery mildew will kill the plants anyway.
If it goes poorly, I will use one of the other methods you mentioned for the rest of the plants.

You didn't say how MUCH water to add to the Calcium/Magnesium/Citrate to spray on the plants. How much?

Have you tried milk or whey spray.
I believe there are ingredients in the whey that can actually get into the leaf cells and fight the fungal infection inside the plant.
Trying to follow the logic here. So if you start with weaker concentration and it's working increase the concentration for next time. If you start with weaker concentration and it's NOT working, increase for next time.
start weaker, because if it works then you know you don't have to go stronger. If you go stronger and kill your plant then what was the gain in that? That's the logic.
I have not been able to find Calcium Magnesium Citrate without other stuff in it. Can you provide a link to it? Everything I have found has flavoring, Vitamin D3, Zinc, Boron, or Vitamin K in it. Not sure if those are safe for plants.
His had D3. Won’t matter. Most magnesium supplements combine D3 and calcium as they work together.
The brand he is using is SOLGAR. i had screen shot the bottle. Yes, it has vitamin D3 in it. 👍
What caused the powdery mildew????
Fuzzy leafed plants get it as soon as there are cooler nights, foggy damp conditions. The spores are always present and just takes right conditions.

Sadly powdery mildew is not going to go away, it is a systemic disease and the powder is the reproduction phase. You have to treat it with something really nasty. Will try your concoction (CaMag), but hmm

You're so right. I grew black krim tomatoes and tried everything to save them. Still died on me.
Migardener sent me a free pack of homestead tomatoes. Their smaller but good producer with no blight.
