    I'm almost 68 years old now, and this takes me back to my teen years, when, several times a week, I'd get a $50 bag of pennies from the bank and rip through them with the hawk eyes of a very young man. Naturally, back in the sixties I was finding occasional Indian heads and tons of really interesting older Lincolns. Sometimes in excellent, lustrous condition. (There was no PCGS back then, of course!) I grew up in Philly, so "S" pennies were the Big Find for me. Never got the S-VDB or the 14-D, but I did find just about everything else. Even a Flying Eagle or two. And then there were the bags of nickels and dimes and quarters. Same basic story. Anyway, you have to appreciate this collector's raw and infectious enthusiasm, his knowledge, his methodology, and his savvy editing. So, what's a person's time worth? Professionally, quite a lot. But this isn't a profession. It's a hobby. And hobbies can coax the obsessive from us. Friends, this isn't about making money, per se, it's not about an hourly rate. It's about something far more sublime: IT'S ABOUT THE THRILL OF THE HUNT! Thank you, buddy, for bringing it all back to me. A priceless 24 minutes. May you find your copper '43.

Anyway, I got all the pennies for helping........ you.... can't.... imagine: 5,000 Indian Heads. Hundreds of rolls of wheaties, 27 partial sets of book one of the Lincolns.... and... in ... a book.... stuck with all the others...... a 1909 S VDB. amazing value, but for an old pennie collector, just a stunning moment

    • @shananagans5
      @shananagans5 Před 4 lety +12

      No doubt. I am a 52yo woman but I totally got into coin collecting when I was a kid. In the late 70s/early 80s there were still rich pickings in rolls from the bank.
      The big thing for me was finding the steel pennies. My grandparents had change buckets dating back to the early 1900s. That was like an archaeological dig.
      I was not an extremely knowledgeable collector as far as pennies. I just went through and picked out the indian heads, wheats, the steels and whatever stuck out as unusual. I did find a penny that was only struck on about 1/3 of it. It was bent from the striking process and everything. Biggest error coin I have ever seen. Anyways, yes, hours spent hunting for something unusual.
      Unfortunately, very few kids are into that kind of thing now. I have a bunch of proof sets I purchased in the early 80s. I assumed their values would go up but they didn't. Values crashed because so few people are into coins now.

    • @jimthesoundman8641
      @jimthesoundman8641 Před 4 lety +11

      Wheat pennies were minted from 1909 to 1956, the obverse featured our 16th President, Abraham Lincoln (1861-1865) and the reverse featured two wheat stalks surrounding the words "One Cent". In 1957 the design on the reverse was changed to feature the Lincoln Memorial in Washington DC. So if you see a wheat penny, you know automatically you have an oldie. They are easy to spot.

    I don’t understand anything about coins but everytime you found a Canadian penny, I was happy. Those are non-existent in Canada anymore but also it means we infiltrated your currency. Muhahhaa!

      And they stayed here too. American banks wouldn't take Canadian coins back in the 1970s, maybe still don't.

    Out of 10,000 pennies lets say he found 50 keepers. If the average value of those fifty are $.03, then the total value is $1.50. The remaining 9,950 pennies can be cashed in for $99.50.
    His total return would be $101 on a $100 investment. Still better than a savings account.

      Wouldn't the profit be only $1? He still had to purchase the pennies in the first place for $100.

      Or could have mowed the neighbors lawn in the several hours involved and made $20-30...
      Bear in mind that he had to go buy these, do this whole thing, then drive to the bank to dump these pennies into the counting machine.

    Cut.
    "We got it under the scope."
    How hard was it to get that penny under the scope? How much time could have possibly been saved with that cut? :D

    I have just about every penny you showed. I haven’t looked at them in a while but I have a couple made in the mid to late 1800’s, a few Indian heads, 1900’s, 20’s, 30’s, 40’s I’m missing some, actually quite a few in these years, and they are hard to find, but if memory serves me I have all the 50’s up to 2004, then I stopped doing it when my last child was born in 04. Funny thing is when I was saving these pennies I was doing it just for kicks, at the time didn’t know they were worth anything, who knows some of the real old ones could be worth something. Then again maybe just face value...I might just get to the current year for something to do, who knows, my kids might enjoy them some day.👍🏻

      @HB C It's completely relaxing, a total stress reliever. Plus you win a lot of tickets when listening to the radio while building. I won so many concert tickets while building but sadly never even went to any of the concerts. I just wanted to win and I did.

    I remember when my son excitedly stated "dad !! I found a wheat penny! There hard to find " I was bewildered because I remember when they were all wheat cents. I remember when the memorial cent first came out. I guess that kind of dates me.
