    All my life as a singer, from alto to soprano, NO ONE... taught me this.
    All I always hear was of "breathing control" and "opening my mouth more". Not one person in my entire life has ever told me about this specific detail.
    Yawning, yes. Opening my mouth, yes. But this!
    THIS WAS THE MAIN DETAIL I NEVER KNEW OF!
    23 years of singing. I watch this video. I can pull off singing high and low without worrying of scratches at the throat, or forcing more air pushes from my stomach.
    I'm ready for the solo this Saturday. God bless this video 😭🙏❤

      This is crazy but I’m 23 and have been singing for as long as I can remember and in theatre school I could just never open my throat. I can sing well, but quietly and can’t project much. Every time I tried to sing louder and more open I’d lose the note. And literally today this changed everything! And yes, no teacher had ever told me that before :(

  • @VeraBajadera

    Love your way of explaining. I heard so many times from singing teachers :
    " Open your throat. " I was so frustrated with that sentence cause it was never properly explained to me HOW to actually do it. And it never came to my mind to stick a finger in my throath.
    Well, now I did.... I felt my soft palate, figured out what is the best position for it and my voice was instantly better.
    Thank you

      @@gibsonlauren5072 Chest voices are stronger and more powerful than a head voice, which has a breathy tone to it and is a lot higher. They're named so as they seem to vibrate inside your chest or head. I'd say both are important; a chest voice is good for powerful songs with a lot of emotion (take Into the Unknown from Frozen), while a head voice is used to hit very high notes, and often used in opera.

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  Před 5 lety +123

      I'm happy to hear that the video was helpful! Flat singing can be very frustrating, especially when you are aware of it, and it can make you feel self conscious about your voice.
      It common for people, who feel timid about singing, to hold back on their natural sound volume which can make you sing flat. I'd recommend that you try singing out loud somewhere where you feel "safe" and see if you are still singing flat. Working on breath support can also help to get rid of flat singing. Hope that helps :)

      Medo Fawzy Yes it is, I saw you asked about the larynx earlier. Inhaling with the "surprised face" often lowers the larynx a bit too, which is helpful when singing higher. At one point when you've practiced more, you should be able to raise the soft palate without making the face :)

    Raising your soft palate blocks off a important resonator, your naval cavity which helps with resonance (and it doesn’t make you sound nasal) which helps and assist the vocal folds and helps you sound more resonant, freer larynx control, helps with agility, flexibility which helps you stretch and reach those higher notes with more ease and it encourages more ring etc. Idk I did this (raising my soft palate) and my voice sounds weird as heck and its harder to do stuff. It could just be me but idk I’d rather have a moderately lifted or moderately lowered soft palate imo.

      This is an interesting point about the resonance of the nasal cavity. I do hear more ringing / resonance when I don't raise the soft palate as much. Do you happen to have a source for this information?

    Great explanation! Are there any good exercises to do when you feel that your nose sometimes sound stuffed singing phrases in a song (i assume due to lack of control of the soft palate) when switching between say the consonant m and a vowel.
    I also found one thing that is really tricky to do if you don't raise the soft palate, and that is to do a normal whistle since all air escapes though the nose.

    My last singing teacher did this with another student once. The ng-sound is the key. My eye trick is to try threatening someone with the eyes, so they know your voice is about to kill them. The bullets are not being changed from the throat, but from below the diaphrame; or more precisely, from the bottom 😅

    • @singgeek
      @singgeek  Před 5 lety +30

      Hi Dapper Dan, Thanks for your question! Yes that would be a good way to check it. Just be aware that the air will go in your nose when you sing words with 'm' or 'n' sounds. These sounds are natural nasal sounds which automatically lowers the soft palate. Hope this helps, otherwise please don't hesitate to ask again :)

    Thank you for this valuable information and taking the time to share it. I have a question: In what order should the following occur. Should the soft palate be raised prior to taking in your air, or afterwards or at the same time? I ask, because i noticed that when i focus on making sure i have sufficient air for my next line, the focus on raising the palate diminishes. I suppose more practice as with anything, but wanted to get your input on this.
    Thank you.
