- In this video I show you how to perform the covid-19 swab test at home using the correct technique, so that you can get an accurate result. I walk you through every step of the process from receiving your self test kit to sending it by courier at the end. I hope this video will be useful as most of us will have to perform this test at some point. If you are taking your swab while watching this video I have titled each step so that you can pause along the way.

I totally agree
Kieran Tall facts
Agree 👍
at first when i saw the black line I thought that's how far you had to put it up your nose and freaked out...feeling a bit relieved now haha
Me too!
😂😂😂
Some videos show it going in much further!!

I’m doing my test myself tomorrow morning and freaking out so this video made me feel loads calmer. I need to stop being a baby! Thanks for a great video ❤️
Update : wasn’t that bad 😂 ( just in case if anyone needs to do one and is a little worried like I was)
Also, I did it whilst watching this video so I felt like I wasn’t alone. That helps too haha
Let us know ur test result🙂
I recieved my kit & gonna do the home test
Elisha negative ! Woop woop 🙌🏼 good luck to you x
The week you posted this I had a suspected COVID case and this video was super helpful for me. It was so much better than the official government one. I was lucky to get a negative test result.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help us and keep us informed when you have so much on your plate. It is SO appreciated. Your stories and posts are keeping me sane! Thank you! 🌈💙 xx
Thanks so much Linda xx stay safe 💙
Had to do an at home test the other night due to my work. Definitely didn’t enjoy the nose swab but i also found out I have a fairly good gag reflex 😊 thanks for all you’re videos. They’re helpful to keep us all informed but not to scare as it sometimes seems that’s what happens in the media and across social networking. You all all drs/nurses etc are doing an amazing job in a very difficult time. X
First of all i'd like to say thank you very much for the demonstration. You've explained it really well. I am going to do my self swab test tomorrow morning bit nervous though.
Thank you so much Alex, we got a self-test from work today I was nervous as hell doing on my own. You explained it so well. You put me at ease.
Re-assuring to anyone who needs to do this. Always head to YT if ever I need any info on something I'm not sure about so thanks again Dr Alex!
Thanks Michael 💙
Had to do this today, this video helped me feel calmer about not messing it up, thank you!
Also even after watching this I underestimated how hell putting the box together really was.
I swabbed myself this week and I was scared to do it initially but it was completely fine! Thank you for this video, it was very helpful
Thank you for sharing and for the support x
May I ask did it make you feel sick please? Gave mine later today and not looking forward to it
@@amyk9813 It didn’t make me feel sick. It just makes me gag very slightly if anything, but it depends on your gag reflex! Don’t worry about it, I’ve had quite a lot and they have all been completely fine
This is brilliant. Wish I had watched it before I went for my covid test today. I was freaking out that I had done it wrong but now I feel at ease.
I don't understand how people are doing this without instantly gagging, I choked the second it touched my tonsil, not convinced my tongue didn't touch it at that point. Took several attempts on each tonsil to make up 10 seconds. Madness XD
Exactly the same. I’m sure it touched my tongue and there was basically no way of stopping it.
I’m getting used to it so I don’t rlly gag as much 😂
Same here! I have very sensitive gag reflexes..; I can't even brush my teeth without gagging sometimes!
Try making a fist BUT put your thumb under your fingers i.e the fist you shouldn't make if you were going to punch someone haha
@@benadams2643 that technique has never worked for me :P
This video really helped my mum and I. I'll definitely be sharing this round. Thank you!xx
Thanks Lily 💙
You are correct the box is the most difficult part of the test. Thank you for showing me how to do it.
Took me half hour!!!
Really informative and reassuring. This will definitely speed things up for people doing their tests at home. So useful! Thanks x
Absolutely! Thank you xx
Thanks Dr Alex, so reassuring watching and your guidance so clean precise and informative too.
Thank you!!
Thanks Dr. George, really easy to follow & pause tutorial, just sent my test off...couldn't have done it without you & be confident I didn't mess something up. Love the NHS :)
Thank you so much for this. I have to do a test next week and your video is, by far, the easiest to follow
Thank you so much for this. I hope that my family and I shall never need this but hey we never know. Thank you for the video to make us feel more relaxed about the whole process. Keep up your excellent work x
Thank you so much and stay safe x love to the family x
@@DrAlexGeorge it is normal to use the same Swab For the throat and for the nose? Aren't bacteria being transported from the throat to the nose?
So useful Dr Alex! Thank you for explaining it all! Low key enjoying a man with a medical degree struggle with origami! 😂
Stay well x
Thanks for watching 💙 hahha
Thanks for the video, i have been randomly selected for the home test by Imperial college London for Covid 19 home test. I have recieved the kit today & feeling overwhelmed by seeing all the instructions and labels. Ur video helped me ease my anxiety😃
I have also recieved a saliva test kit. I wish i could see that in ur video too..
Thank you so very much Alex for explaining things so clearly & reassuring everyone with this process--a huge help & solid advice as always, so extremely grateful to you for everything xx💙💙
Thank you so much Sharleen 💙💙
No need to apologise Dr George. Your video is the only one I've found that even attempts to show exactly where in the throat to swab! On my third bloody test already this evening!
Awww thankyou Dr Alex waiting for my test today this has made me feel much better 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤️dreading it.
Thanks for sharing your content on different subjects. Thank you to you and all your colleagues for doing what you are all doing. Amazing 🌈🌈 xx
Thanks Sarah!! X
I don’t even live in the UK but I still watched every second love ur vids!!!
Thank you!!

@@hectorbartlett567 you get a life
its still very helpful, i dont live in the uk but currently have a home kit and getting ready for travel to the uk so need to make sure i do it correctly
Your video helped me to understand what to do with the testing kit, I'm not to fussed about the nose swab.......I'm quite nervous.......going to do the test tomorrow and get the results in about 4 days time, Thank you for putting my mind to rest.
Thank you for this, Dr Alex.
I've recently been in contact with someone who has covid and now I've got a horrible cough.
I have a test on the way and i'm dreading it. I have a terrible gag reflex. Like, really bad!
Anyway, this will definitely help me out.
Love your videos 💙
Thanks Louise and stay safe x
Thank You Doctor, it is so helpful for me to do the test and you were instructing each and everything.
I’m a nurse in a care home and will be testing staff weekly from next week so this video is actually so helpful😁
U take a swap every single week?
Shahad Abd yes all staff in care homes in the uk
Hi Dr Alex~ when I was in hospital for 4 weeks I was tested twice, once when I arrived and once before i left to go onto a community hospital.. thank goodness both were negative..They are certainly not very nice tests to have done but I would sooner have that than have coronavirus!!!!! Especially suffering from secondary progressive multiple sclerosis and lupus.. thank you for all your doing!!!!~ Sending love and hugs~ Xxx Xxx
Thank you and hope you are feeling better 💙
Dr Alex George hi thank you for replying ~ I’m doing ok ish~ I get the results from an urgent brain and spinal mri scan next week ..I’m totally dreading it.. scared stiff to be honest~ but with everything that’s going on in the world I really haven’t got a lot to complain about ..take care and I look forward to your next video~ Xxx Xxx
Dr Alex you have this made so easy for me, I’m going to have a Hip Replacement on the 6th August, courier dropping it off and taking straight back to Guys. Thank you for sharing this video
I have to be tested for work every week and I have the kit arriving Tomorrow. I have no symptoms.....but HAVE to do it 😥 the video has helped me know what to expect and do...thank you Dr
Many thanks Dr Alex, this video has been amazing, very helpful and clear. It put me at easy. Bless you!
MUCH BETTER EXPLAINED THAN THE OFFICIAL GOVT VIDEO. THANKS DR ALEX
For someone with anxiety this video helps so much
This video was very helpful, thank you. Much easier to follow step by step than the gov one . Great Alex 👍
Watching you demonstrate how to do this is helpful take care xx
Dr Alex - great video - miles better than the government one. I've had a dry and persistent cough for over a week now (I'm sure the neighbours hate me) and very low energy levels, although my temperature is fine. I'm taking the test to hopefully put my mind at rest - I think this is a summer cold - but thanks to your very helpful tutorial I've been able to figure out how to swab properly. (Making up the return box stressed me out more than the actual test!)
What did you find out?
@@susant1323 Hi, I tested negative, I think I was just very run down... but doing the test definitely put my mind at ease.
Thanks so much, had anxiety incase I did the nose swab wrong if I didn't put it up far enough but this looks the same. I'll take another one just incase. Thanks for doing this, I don't feel alone in my worries now x
Thank you for putting yourself through that for us all x
Thats ok glad it helps x
Me and my 3 year old are due to be tested next week before he goes into hospital and I’m so nervous! This video will help me prepare so thank you! X
💙💙
I had my tonsils removed. Worried I’m going to do swab wrong when home test comes thanks
Taking my COVID-19 home test tomorrow, your video was much more helpful than the government one thank you Dr Alex x
Thank you for this informative video :) do you know anything about why some countries offer the spit test and others the throat and nose swab? Research seems to show they are both as effective. Could you do a video on that?
Thanks for your video. In your video it is clearly apparent how the bio hazard bag opens and how you put the plain plastic bag with the sample & the absorbent in it. The bio hazard(the 95k pa) bag that came with the kit didn't open at all for me, it seemed to have no opening!Funny that everything else was straight forward lol
Thanks for sharing this video and information about home swab tests. You explain the process clearly which is reassuring. Thanks Alex 💙
Thanks Louise 💙
I had my test at work 2 days ago (everyone got tested just incase because of where we work, no symptoms etc) It wasn’t painful, just made my eyes water quite a bit. I got my results yesterday and it was negative. Definitely take a test if you get symptoms, don’t be scared
I will send my kit today later afternoon (Thursday), what do you think will I get my result back Friday afternoon or Late night ?
Such a comprehensive, informative and clear video. Im sure this will benefit many just as it did for me. Thanks
Just received my home test kit today very nervous so come looking for videos thankyou x
When did u received ur result back after sending? After how many days xx ?
Thank you so much for this video, Had no clue what to do :)
I did my own swab. It wasn’t pleasant just a little uncomfortable and my eyes watered for ages after, but i had my results in 48 hours. Very easy process for me.
Thanks for sharing Sophie, will help others z
Just folding my tongue made me puke, getting a swab in there took me 30 minutes of attempts while not trying to touch anything else...
Watching this so I know what to expect when I have my asymptomatic test at uni next week because I’m going to have to self administer, just hoping it doesn’t set off my gag reflex too badly 😂
Fantastic You can see exactly what you need to do so you don't get the test wrong well done
Suppose the box is to protect the tube. We are distributing the tests, so you might know who I work for lol. Great Vid Dr.
Alex, good video. This is helpful and clear. I would ask, especially from someone like you who will be held by laypeople as an expert, to NOT fall into the media's language when describing kits like these. These are definitely NOT tests; they are sample collection kits. You accurately describe the process and it is clear that these kits don't provide the home user testing capabilities at home. And here's the point: what will experts and media call the kits that actually DO enable laypeople to test themselves at home? I know that you will be clear but media and experts need not confuse the relatively uninformed public who often will not understand the difference between two kits being described as 'home test kits' when this definitely is not the case. Thanks for your good, informative service to the betterment of public health! Please continue!
Hi Dr Alex, great informative video. Can you enlighten me on the difference between this test (swabbing 2.5cm up nose and tonsils) as opposed to the test that is angled flatter and much further through the nose into the back of the throat? Thanks!
Thank you for sharing and going slowly step by step. Aswell as not quickly showing the visual que as many people learn differently. I speak for a few that where watching.
Thank you - i could not work out how to put the box together!!
I've been waiting for an Amazon home test kit results for 9 days. Leaked internal memo from them stated that the test wasn't really any good anyway. Last check was 3 separate infected test sites in UK and 19 in USA. There's 185,000 tests from the UK in France and Italy, probably never to return here again.
Hello Dr Alex, Very useful & informative again 😁 thank you for sharing & stay safe! 💙 Erica x
Thanks Erica 💙
This was very helpful since I have to do home test swabs and not a secondary any more but I have a different swab kit 😬
it says in the booklet not to cover the UN3373 markings on the box with the royal mail sticker
We did our own at a drive through x your channel is so informative 👍
Thank you 💙
Do you need to reseal the first bag? Or just leave open as it is then going into the second bag
thank you for help with the box 😭😭 that was by far the hardest part of this ordeal lol
I agree 👍
Dr Alex this video is absolutely phenomenal and im sure when the covid-19 times are over and at the beginning you mentioned cars as your Hobby and I certainly can't wait to see your car videos as they are excellent and phenomenal and when will the antibody test be ready for everyone to see if they have had the disease and not showed any symptoms or in other words checking asymptomatic people if they've had the covid-19 in the past as this would be interesting to know and thank you again to you and your colleagues during this Covid-19 times
Thanks mate means so much!!
@@DrAlexGeorge your very welcome and I hope better day's will return. I also hope with our brilliant scientists endeavour that we have a vaccine against covid-19 in the near future.
Having surgery in two weeks and nursery gave me a swab for nostrils to test from MRSA. Now I'm thinking I didn't go 'deep' enough. Have to go back for the covid test few days before so this was very useful so I can see what they will do/they will ask me to do 👍🏻
💙 Stay safe
Hi Dr Alex
If one person in the household has symptoms does everyone in the household get tested?
Is this test done the same way for children under 5 ? I have a 4 and 17 month old what if I’m not confident in doing the test for them what are my options?
Very helpful video thank you.
Hi Dr Alex, l have a burning question l have wanted to ask. With illnesses developing and medicine changing, how do you keep yourself updated with these developments and changes?
Shoot I didn’t see I got my test until now and it arrived yesterday ! I have to arrange the courier tomorrow morning as it’s not available right now. So will it be to late for it to be sent out on Monday? I haven’t taken the test yet I’ll take it before I send it off
You use the same swab for your throat and mouth?
Also i have a deviated septum so my left nostril is blocked what should i do?
Thanks
Thank you for this helpful video, I still feel I would rather go to a testing station. If it comes with a prepared Royal Mail label can you get someone to take it to the post office?
They will collect from your door 💙
Hi just seen this what about those who wear dentures should they take them out and what happens if the swab goes to far up the nostril and causes it to bleed ?
Thx for doing this, all ready for school next week
So interesting my aunt is a phlebotomist and wants to get a test so this is great to know about!
💙
Hi Doc, thanks. Would like to know what is the liquid. Just preservative alcohol ? Thank you.
You loved that box Alex ;) haha thanks for another great video, informative and still made me chuckle! x
Haha thank you xx
This video is reassuring and calming
The kits me and my mum got didn’t come with return stickers so do I just take it to a test site?
When I had a home test from the docs I was only given a nostril swab and it said not to go far up in the nose. It came back negative but sure I had it. Had they sent the wrong test
Thanks Dr George !!! I’m swabbing today
Very good and clear instructions Alex.
You look tired. Hope you're not overdoing things.
Thank you! Means a lot x
Why Canada Quebec does not have those tests ? How sensitive in % are your test compared to PCR ? Thanks for sharing.
I did the test about a half hour ago and didn't realise before, where my tonsils are! After looking at Google and having a second look at the leaflet i found them! I spent ages looking at the Gov web page they ask you to register at. I ended up calling the help line and discovered you need to follow the link from your email that you receive after you request a kit.I think this is a better video than the government one, their video is a bit trendy with different camera angles but for solid information, i'd say this is more helpful, Including how to fold the box, ( a challenge in itself ! )
I'm in the same predicament as you cliff as to the location of my tonsils and to swab the right area of them as we have to make sure we do this right, in order to get the right test result it's a serious matter I shall be googling also.
Yeah except my mouth looks nothing like the one on the leaflet or pictures of tonsils on the Internet. There’s literally nothing there and I didn’t have them cut out...
@@Micromation I know the leaflet said to swab where your tonsils should, be if they aren't there now.
@@cliff19555 considering I’ve never seen them in my lifetime so far that’s not exactly helpful guideline if you catch my drift xD I’ve done the test half an hour ago but I don’t know whether or not I’ve fucked it up... my gag reflex is so bad that merely folding my tongue the right way makes me vomit, so does anything that isn’t food after reaching past 1/3rd of my tongue.
@@Micromation Sounds like it's been a tough test for you. I'm sure they will let you know if the test needs to be done again.
I have just watched two other videos and they say that in the instructions it states that when you put the address label onto the box do not to cover the number that is on the front in the square box.
How long did it actually take from you ordering the test til you getting it, and how long did it take for you to get the results after the carrier oicked it up?
Thanks for another great video gave me flash backs of when I was tested for swine flu 🙈 hoping to not have to need this and be subjected to it again 🤞💙
Thanks Debs xx
I just got a kit will do this later today very useful thank you Doc
hi could someone please tell me if i should take the test an hour before the pick up or does it not matter?
Hi Dr, thank you so much for this video. Though I've had it done back in July it was in a car park at ASHSTEAD Hospital. After being sick over Christmas my GP Felt i should get a test now. Really appreciate your video, it will make a care assistant of me yet x
This video is more helpful than the government one! I'm doing a home test tomorrow for research purposes! X
Thank you for this video Dr. ALEX good to know.
💙💙
Hi
This video is very good, it teaches you from the beginning to the end, I did my test today, I hope it turns out negative even though I have some symptoms not very similar to covid-19
I was petrified with the nose swab that you were going to say, 'and now you need to insert it all the way until you can no longer see the black band on the stick.' Thank goodness. I'm leaving Hong Kong on the 23rd so I have to do this before I fly.
Thank u sir...Normaly after how many day i will get this test result.
love this so helpful! thank u 💙
Thanks Anna 💙
Got to do mine today and I'm dreading it. I have a strong gag reflex, I start heaving about halfway back on my tongue, let alone basically touching the sides of my throat. Is my mum able to help me if she washes her hands, wears a mask, maybe even puts on gloves?
Sorry Dr Alex, l have another, as a Dr, do you have to have some kind of insurance to be a Dr and carry out your job? I know all professional medics have to be registered etc but was not sure on insurance to say protect yourself.
