  • Making your first game can be difficult. Remember that your goal is to make a game, any game. Start small, focus on basic gameplay, and pick a project you can finish. That way, you can actually complete a playable game instead of getting stuck on the details as so many first time game makers do.

    A little tiny hint I have - Do not be afraid to be a copycat. Don't expect yourself to be able to invent a whole new moustrap and never resort to ideas you did not invent, but rather saw in other games.
    If you see an idea and you think it will fit into your game - grab it. You'll tweak it along the way later and probably make it different. Maybe even better than it was where you saw it. Don't let ideas like "I'm not going to do it this way, because *** does it already" stop you.

      I think it was also on an Extra Credits video about videogame narratives that it's usually best to determine what gameplay mechanics you want to use BEFORE deciding on a plot. Lay out how exactly the game plays out and what you want the player to do, and that should work out what kind of story the game should have better than the reverse. That really helped me out.

      This episode just about sums up the first few projects I've been working on. It's frustrating, even with a team, to try to get so many new things done you either haven't done before or don't have the manpower to complete in a timely fashion. It's also much harder to stay motivated when you are working in your spare time, for free and on projects which may not succeed and pay out. It's important to keep trying and keep learning as you go. You never get NOTHING out of working on a game, even a failed project.

    Great advice. As for assets. I found that learning to use a 3D modeling program like Blender (there are TONS of tutorials online about using it) is one of the best ways. It's simple, easy to get started with and what you create will probably look fairly decent. For example, I created some walls with Blender, I angled them for isometrics and after some experimenting, I got it down pat. Walls are just cubes, reshaped, textures added is easy. An enemy is just as easy to do up.
    Things like sound effects seem difficult, but are surprisingly easy and fun to create. I created a cannon shot one time by dropping a book onto my desk, recording it, then slowing down the speed of the sound in Audacity (another free program for audio). I created a fire sound by crinkling hard plastic, recording it, then blowing into a microphone and recording that. I combined the two sounds in audacity and the end result sounds exactly like fire. Audacity also has some built in functions for creating sounds as well.
    There are lots of game engines out there you can use, but personally, I highly recommend you learn something like C++ using a library like SDL for your sounds and graphics, this way you have full control over it and for me, it is more satisfying to make my own game engine. It is cross-platform, which means if you do it right, you can create a game for different operating systems like Linux, a MAC, Windows etc. Even if just for Windows, SDL is pretty easy to use and again, there are tons of tutorials out there.

    I'm an engineer and let's be honest I will never be a game dev no matter how much of a nerd I may be. But as someone who has an often very difficult technical job I feel I can offer advice to people entering into something of relative scale. There is one trait you will need to be successful, and simply put, you won't be without it, that is follow through, you cannot abandon your project when it gets difficult. The best way to know you're meant to do something is if you can still enjoy it and keep at it even when the going gets rough. Being an engineer can be a bitch but I wouldn't have it any other way, it's what makes it worth doing, If you can make a game (or anything really) on similar ideals, you will be successful, just keep at it and have fun.
    Edit: I know I shouldn't have but I typed this before watching the video, and it actually lined up exactly how I thought it would. Just saying, keep at it, power through, and let the struggle power you through :)

      I agree with the concern, and working alone will most certainly help make the learning process easier. Lunarex in particular brought up an example I know all too well. However, if the circumstances are right, it's fine to work with a partner. The most important part is to make sure your partner is both contributing to the game and motivated to make it as much as you are. Prior friendship is entirely optional.
      My first set of games were made for Global Game Jam (which is coming up soon!), and everyone there were really motivated in making games. I found that teaming with others who are equally interested in making the proposed game idea were the best teams, even if we had no prior experience working with each other.

Further, people ofter compliment each other. Where you are weak he/she may be strong and vice versa. In our case I'm a software engineer while he's a graphics artist. We both have enough experience in each other's fields to understand what is going on so we can communicate effectively. I would hate to undertake even a simple game alone simply because there is so much to do. Controlls, graphics, sound, music, etc ....

I'd pulled all the sprite assets from various GBA games, you were either player 1 or player 2 and that'd give you a different dude, but amazingly, it sorta worked. Sorta. Thanks for the video, Creditz! I remember I was obsessed with your channel a couple years ago, hahaha. I'm like, your biggest fan. Anywhom, I just got back into game development when I remembered I had a laptop. It was sitting dormant for about a year. Just plain forgot it existed. I'd bought RPG Maker VX Ace in 2014 and I forgot how awesome it was.
    Thanks to you guys, I took making the game seriously, even though I knew I'd be pretty limited by the program; it's far from perfect. I had a basic idea of a main character, then wrote out a basic summary of the plot. After I had my plot summary, I worked on my characters. I'm in school for psychology, so I wrote out like three pages for each character's info, using the OCEAN model of personality.
    After that, I just started working on it! Designing the world, making Arrun's (MC) home village and house, setting up leveling systems and working out details of progression. The most difficult aspect of the experience, by far, are events. But now that I've watched several tutorials about how they worked, they're pretty cool in just how much detail you wanna put in a scene.
    I wanna go on and on about my game but I don't wanna flood the comment section! If you guys comment asking for more info, I'd be happy to go into detail about the plot, characters, their personalities and such. Maybe make a CZcams vid about how and why I did what I did? Good luck on your own Quests, guys!

I just pretended that I meant for the game to behave the way it did and designed my levels around these glitches that I couldn't fix. Now today, I'm working on a simulation game with a team of incredibly talented 3D artists and I'm still trying to pretend like everything is going according to plan. haha In my opinion, that's the best way to make games :)

  • @Mewobiba

    What are your thoughts on starting with making mods for existing games? To me it feels like it would be a good way to get some experience in the design aspects, and possibly coding and art aspects depending on what game you mod, while still being able to push out something that's actually enjoyable to use.
    Though granted, personally I've always just had interest in modding, rather than creating, when it comes to computer games (though I like creating when it comes to board games).
    But can that be a good idea to start with, or is that also a pit fall?

    • @ultimaterc
      @ultimaterc Před 9 lety +5

      The scope is much narrower, so it's easier to get started and actually complete something. But as you say, depending on what game you're modding, the range of skills you can acquire are also much narrower.
      That said, I DO know of quite a few people who work in the industry now, at AAA studios, who started as modders. But they're mostly Art and level design types. Nothing wrong with that if those are your interests and strengths (and the amount of art needed in games these days is enormous), but if you're more technical, modding doesn't offer as much.

    • @cshahbazi1220
      @cshahbazi1220 Před 9 lety +6

      I've worked on numerous RTS games for modding and I can say that modding is great to learn design, granted that you know some theoretic stuff too, otherwise it'll end up being something you "feel" is right. I'll admit the scope of my work were also very narrow as I worked with map editors and didn't touch the tools for models/art. An important thing from my experience is that the tools that you're provided with would make the world of difference, both in how easy it is and how much you can get done; for example Red Alert and Tiberian Sun's editors were a bit hard to get into but ended up being rather easy to work with, scripting was hard (at least back when I was doing it, I was only 15 years old then) and your options were open. Meanwhile Warcraft3's editor had tons of more options and you could build almost anything from it and map design was also rather easy to get something acceptable done, but on the other hand scripting was a nightmare and I couldnt get anything meaningful done. On the other hand, Stronghold Legends' map editor was very easy to get into and the scripting was also much simpler and easy to do yet your options were more limited, but it was also a game I went a step further and also started messing with audio files too.
      The good thing is that if you can get work done like I did in Stronghold Legends, you can exercise game design pretty well, but not so much the rest of the aspects like art, modeling, animation, programming etc. It also doesn't teach much teamwork because at best you'd be working with 2-5 people and those are like "big" projects. I can also admit that despite the amount of time I did invest, I don't particularly feel more ready to work on a game, I don't feel like you could throw me in a studio and tell me to start working because I don't have the technical qualifications. Perhaps in the next episodes someone like me would get more enlightened, but so far I feel the need to prepare myself more technically.
      TL;DR: It gives experience to practice some game design but not the other fields of production. It's more of a personal experience than something that readies you to work within a professional team.

    • @eyegrinder94
      @eyegrinder94 Před 9 lety +2

      I've actually been hoping for them to do an episode on modding (even though I've never asked them to or brought it up, just a silent hope). I myself have been modding for Fallout 3 / New Vegas for quite some time, and given how easy modding has been made for those games, at least for those games it definitely gives you more in the design chapter, unless you're like, fixing scripting errors or something.
      But yeah, I think it can be a nice gateway, at least to get you started. If you've started out and gotten a taste of what you can do, then that might just be the incentive you need to get over the thresh-hold of learning to use an engine from base or something.

    • @dak1st
      @dak1st Před 9 lety +2

      Depending on what you mean by modding. Modding can be making Warcraft 3 maps using the pre-made world editors or hacking into .DLLs and changing code.
      If you go for the first kind you will learn quite a lot of game design without having to bother about coding or content creation. If you go for the latter one you will focus more on coding and less on the other areas.

After working on it for two years I actually did the math and figured out that even if nothing went wrong just writing the code would have taken me almost ten years. My first game was just a number guessing game I made on a graphing calculator. I'm more of a programmer now, but making little games has always fueled my creativity. At a hackathon this February, I attempted to remake one of my favorite flash games from middle school. It wasn't near as complete as the original, but I had something that worked and could impress people with. Making games is really rewarding!

    I made my first game with C++. It was a console 1vs1 where you had to kill your opponent. The code was about 700 lines long and very simple. Have to say that I still don't know how to code snake lol :D

      Robert Reimann don't spend that much time on your first games, try to get something that works as soon as possible, then move onto the next, that is if you aren't planning on selling that game

    Does "RPG Maker" count as an engine? :D
    I've worked with that, and actually 'finished' quite a few small projects, and I can ABSOLUTELY relate to everything said in this video. It's SO easy to underestimate the work that goes into even the simplest games, and even with such a easy to use 'engine'...
    ... I also have to admit that I started FAR more projects than I ever finished, and that, I think, is also part of the experience. Even an unfinished project (hopefully) taught you some things, and be it only the fact that you are just one person. There's only so much you can do in a certain time-frame, and only so much patience for a single project...

    • @QXbR9
      @QXbR9 Před 9 lety +26

      RPG Maker does totally count as an engine, and although it's not to my tastes, I disagree with those who say "It's not a real engine". Software that can make multiple genres of games is technically an engine, not a maker.
      I totally relate to you on the patience part. I am not a patient person. >.>

      There's a whole Steam category for RPGMaker games, actually. So...yeah, it's a real engine.

      While you can certainly learn a lot from unfinished projects, it's always best to get out of the habit as soon as you possibly can and get into the mindset of finishing every game. I fell into this trap myself and got caught in a really vicious cycle of never getting anything done for years. Even if it's just something small, having something fully completed is always a good thing.

      That's a really cool place to start. But for the next step maybe you should try creating something without the help of the many tools an "RPG Maker" provides. =]

      I was actually asking that myself, but feared that everyone would go "ewwww". After diving more into it, you can do much more with RPG Maker VX Ace ! Like strategy. You just need an acompaning (often free!) script to make it possible!

    There is an old story about two Greek islanders trying to become the strongest man on the island.
    One trainee bought a newborn calf. The other laughed at him. How could a calf help his rival train? But every day the wise trainee lifted it. Every day the calf got a little bigger and heavier, but he could still lift it because it was only a little bit heavier than the previous day. After a year the wise trainee saw that the calf was now a bull, but he could still lift it.
    In the meantime the unwise trainee had tried every day to lift a bull, and failed every time.
