  • The Tecsun R-9012 is a popular analogue radio, but the new XHDATA D-109 is often compared to the Tecsun. It is a similar sizes and has similar band availability, but the XHDATA is DSP-based. This video compares the XHDATA D-219 and the Tecsun R-9012 on MW.
    I am thoroughly impressed with the D-219 on shortwave, I think it is one of the best radio buys of 2023 so far! So how does it do on long-distance MW DXing, compared to the Tecsun R9012? This video will show you. Recorded from 19:04 UTC, 21:04 CAT.

    I think the xhdata is a little more sensitive but the Tecsun is more pleasant to listen to.

    Tecsun has a softer sound, but xhdata is otherwise better in my opinion and cheaper. Thank you for making this comparison for us.

      My pleasure! I agree, the Tecsun sometimes sounds a bit nicer, but the XHDATA does seem to have a better overall performance.

    I have both receivers. I find the new D-219 amazing for the price. It seems more solid in reception than the 9012 but I can hear the DSP chip heavily processing the signal resulting in a more muffled sound. The analog 9012 seems to give a more 'natural' sound but suffers more from noise on weaker signals.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před rokem +5

      I absolutely agree with you, the DSP processing is very obvious and the Tecsun sounds much more natural. But the DSP in the XHDATA does seem to help quite a bit :-)

    For someone in the United States, it was a treat to hear a selection of African MW stations. I agree with the previous comment that the XHDATA seems a little more sensitive but the Tecsun has more pleasing audio.

    IHave had several r9012 and find them great for a, m. DX as well as S,W. but only strong separate F.M. stations . O n every one that I had the tuning knob gets stiffer to use with time until you can barely turn it! Thanks for video!

      Thanks! I haven't had the issue with the tuning knob yet, but I have only had mine for about 18 months or so. I agree that FM on this one is only good for strong, separate stations.

    Thanks for the helpful video. Based on your comparison (and others') I've ordered the XHDATA D-219. It's more expensive here on Amazon France (got it for 16€ 24hr delivery incl.) but I wouldn't wait for it to be sent over from China.
    I'll mostly use it for SW listening (former DX CBer here) and the XHDATA seems to have a clear advantage in this area.
    Difficult choice because the TECSUN has a better design IMO: tuning button, display and a much clearer sound. But SW sensitivity wins it all.
    Strangely enough they're sold at the same price here on the local Amazon.
    Can't wait to have this new toy and do some evening SW listening.

      @@swlistening Thanks for your appreciation. I've had the D-219 in my hands for a day now and I must say that it has impressed me reception-wise. I had some pretty clear reception of MW stations from UK and Maghreb yesterday evening, indoors. MW band is almost completely dead here in France, no local stations (so is LW, sadly). I'm in Paris.
      I haven't had a chance to browse the SW bands yet. I'll do so when out of the city soon, using a wire antenna.
      A few not so good things to report about the receiver, though. My D-219 has some obvious manufacturing defects: the white band marker is not well aligned with the holes on the front plastic panel, so it's not quite visible. The tuning button has a rough point at each end, requiring too much force to operate when getting close to both ends. It makes me wonder if it could eventually fail soon too.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před rokem +1

      @@F4LDT-Alain Thank you so much for your comments Alain! In South Africa MW is also almost completely dead, about four local stations still remaining in Johannesburg, and at night I can pick up three Cape Town stations. That's pretty much all that is left. Luckily still many MW stations in all the neighbouring countries, so Mozambique, Botswana, Lesotho, eSwatini and Malawi come through often. Sometimes Tanzania, and when I am lucky Egypt, and once or twice I picked up Morocco. On good days I pick up Radio Rossi and Vesti FM from Russia, and some Middle Eastern stations.
      I am sorry to hear about your experience with the manufacturing defects. Sadly this does seem to happen with some radios made in China, some are just about perfect and others in the same model line have some defects. I think I was lucky with mine, I did not experience these issues you mention.

      @hmdbxpz Před rokem +1

      @@swlistening They predict the same for Europe in the nearby future; power cuts. Caused by the fact that more and more people are going to have solar panels on their roofs which can cause the power cuts. Those solar panels also cause qrm on the radio frequencies. And then we have the electric cars which need to "tank" their batteries out of the power network and so also can cause power cuts.

    Good video on a couple fun radios. R9012 has a more pleasant and easier to discern audio. The xhdata may be a better DXer. Everyone should put a radio like this in their cars glove compartment.
    I have always preferred the sound of pure analog radios. My Tecsun 9700 has a lovely clean and natural non PLL or DSP audio.

    • @swlistening
      @swlistening  Před 7 měsíci +1

      Thank you for your comment! I agree with you, the D-219 is definitely the better DXing radio here. I actually prefer the sound on the D-219, but the R9012 certainly has good sound. Like you, I also enjoy analogue radios, the best analogue radio for me would be one that has a digital display though. I always think it is a good idea to keep an emergency radio somewhere, preferably in a Faraday cage to protect against electromagnetic storms.

    • @snowpuppy77
      @snowpuppy77 Před 7 měsíci +1

      For 10 bucks US I need to just get the 219. Not because I need another radio but just for fun. If xdata would make one with analog dial and a digital counter to show frequency and toggle as a digital clock, the I would easily pay double for it.
      I have a Grundig 350dx which is pure analog with digital frequency display. Single conversion so some issues there. Not the best build quality. But very good sound quality. Fun radio for sure.

      @@snowpuppy77 And the D-219 really is loads of fun! I have three of them 🙂 One is still in the box as a spare, one is the emergency radio, and the other is in use. I would be just behind you in line if XHDATA ever makes an analogue radio with a digital display.

      @swlistening I have a Kaito KA1107 pure analog that has a digital clock that is back-lit when you turn on the back lighting for the dial. No toggle button for frequency unfortunately. Also this radio has bleed through on shortwave. Other than that, great super fun radio. Super cool to look at in a dark room with all the back lighting. Unfortunately it is discontinued. Out of these two I would suggest the XHDATA D-219. It is an amazing radio at the price. The reception on SW and FM is as good as many other radios that are much more expensive. It is quite good on MW also. Batteries last a long time. If you want to pay a bit more, look at the XHDATA D-109, also very good, on SW, MW and FM. Plus it can play music from SD cards and has Bluetooth for streaming.

I brought a spare set of AA batteries for a weekend trip, never needed them. BL-5C battery on PL-330 has about 3.8 watts. Energy capacity of 2xAA rechargeable NiMh battery has about 5.2watts of energy store or about 40% more energy and run time and AA batteries you can find them in any store and the whole package is smaller and lighter than PL-330.

      Hi Omar, thanks, but I think there is a major difference here, the one is a full analogue radio (the R9012) and the D-219 is DSP-based analogue.
