- Back in the 60s, many of the top songwriters from the so-called British Invasion wrote songs for other artists. Lennon and McCartney wrote several songs for other artists and bands and so did Jagger and Richards. And, of course, Kinks leader Ray Davies did the same. Here's a selection of some of the songs that he wrote for other artists.

The Davies brothers spell their name D-A-V-I-E-S. But they pronounce it 'Davis'. Fans of theirs, particularly in North America, pronounce their name differently than they do. This has been going on since the 1960's, long before there were computers and certainly long before the computer generated voice.
So the conversation between another person and myself has absolutely nothing to do with computer generated voices.
I don't know how better to explain it to you.

I wouldn’t say underrated. But more forgotten and having become unknown. People who know of them generally rate their material highly.

@@389383 When it comes to British invasion bands everyone pits the Stones against The Beatles and if anything I'd say it's The Kinks Vs The Beatles.
They are underrated on North America, IMO, where they did not get the recognition they deserved.

Ray's always been one of my favourite songwriters of all time. He's amazingly talented!
'This Strange Effect' is a great song and deserved to be another #5 hit for Dave. Ray wrote some of the best pop songs and they are still sounding fresh today. 'David Watts' recorded in '67 became a hit for the Jam in '78.
The Jam crushed it.
I knew about many of these tracks, but it's only when you put them together that you realize how awesome a writer Ray was, even without The Kinks' help.

In Jr High others had the Beatles, Stones Animals but MY band was the Kinks- first saw them in 68 ( still have B&W photos I took) and saw them about five more times in the 70s
"This Strange Effect" is such a great song, can't believe I've never heard it before.
The Shacks’ cover of the song was used in an Apple commercial a few years ago.

Dave Berry recorded Strange Effect in 1965. There has been a more recent version at the start of the series Nine Perfect Strangers, the vocals are by Raven Violet.

Fantastic! As a big Kinks fan I'm embarrassed for not knowing any of these songs, save one. And Dave managed to do some outside work!
Ray Davies has to be my favourite, most prolific, talented and eclectic songwriter ever in the history of pop n rock music, an absolute genius!

The Kinks will always be my number 1 band. Thanks to my father who was a huge Kinks fan. Sadly i wasn´t able to listen to them in the sixties but Everbodys in Show Biz was my start. Kinks and Kiss were my 70ies bands.
The Pretenders also covered 'Stop your sobbing', if I'm not mistaken. Anyway, Ray and Dave Davies were killer songwriters. I consider them to be some of the best of all times-alongside Pete Townshend.

You're right about the Pretenders doing,"STOP YOUR SOBBING" one reason for that was that Chrisie Hynde from the PRETENDERS was married to Ray Davies for a short while in the early Eighties.They divorced and then Chrisie married the lead singer of the band,SIMPLE MINDS,JIM KERR.SIMPLE MINDS MOST WELL KNOWN SONG WAS,"DON'T YOU FORGET ABOUT ME"........
I was watching a documentary recently about The Kinks in which someone described Ray's songwriting as being like a Lowry painting, I'm no expert on art, but I thought that was a gorgeous description, especially when listening to "Waterloo Sunset". "I Go To Sleep" by the Pretenders is amazing. It suits Chrisie's voice perfectly and her delivery can't be bettered. The horns just take it to another level. One of my favourite songs of all time.

Amazing to think that Ray originally wasn't going to have the Kinks record "Sunny Afternoon". I once heard a band that specialized in 1930's-40's swing and ballads perform the song and it fit right in with the vibe of the period.

i was in a band in the 60s and we played kinks songs. i never heard of dave berry or the song! wow! so many songs i've
never heard by artists i didn't know existed. most didn't get airplay here in the u.s.a.

Saw them in concert in 1966 in Copenhagen Denmark.
Thank you again for the beautiful memories. Never saw The Kinks in concert, but saw RD do a solo show with his band on "triple-elevens" (11 Nov. 2011, or 11/11/11, a Friday; what we in the States call Veterans Day commemorating the end of hostilities in WWI) here in Chicago at the Chicago Theater. I took my then-15-year-old son to the show. He was awed, and so was I. This was almost 8 years after Ray had been shot and wounded by a purse-snatcher in New Orleans' French Quarter after Ray had chased down the thief, who had stolen Ray's girlfriend's handbag. In spite of being 67 at the time of the concert, he hadn't slowed down so much as a step. He played many of The Kinks' big hits and some deep tracks as well, including "Full Moon" from the 1977 "Streetwalker" album. Between songs, he joked and bantered with the audience, even with people calling out to him, demonstrating that his razor wit was as sharp as ever. First heard "All Night Stand" by The Thoughts when I bought the "Nuggets II" anthology in the early 2000s; a true shame the band had no more records.
Among the major great British pop songwriters to emerge in the '60s, what comes to mind when we think of them? McCartney's inborn knack for melodiousness punctuated by gutsy, bluesy shouts. Lennon's acid (in both senses of the word) sensibility and insights, somehow melding a cynical view of the human condition with romantic and idealistic hopes. Townshend's innate ability to tap into youthful restlessness and rebelliousness. Jagger and Richards' (it's hard to think of them separately) bluesy swagger that still had room for wistful rumination ("As Tears Go By," "Ruby Tuesday"). And Ray Davies? Who better captured the unsettling itch underneath the seemingly cozy tea-and-biscuits civility of the English middle class in the '60s? Davies famously did not partake of the drugs-and-party scene of swinging London ca. 1963-69 (his brother did), but he may have been the most quietly iconoclastic of the lot. Long may he and all the others live. Again, thanks so much for these videos.

Where I'm from, The Kinks are often overlooked as performers and songwriters against their more obvious peers, but I've always held a huge appreciation for Ray's writing. It's not easy to write social commentary and wry looks at life while still making the song sound great. I love the Thoughts and the Shel Naylor tracks and have never heard those before. Thanks so much for those, YP! I think Mama was my first exposure to Dave Berry and it held no appeal for me at all. Over the years, I heard more and grew to love his truly unique performing style. This Strange Effect is probably my favourite of his. A single that deserved better in the UK charts.

Dave Berry is very underrated. He recorded lots of great tunes in the 60s, I'm a big fan of him. I would agree that "This Strange Effect" is the highlight of his recording career. And I completely agree with your comment about Ray Davies. Personally, all the Kinks records from "Face to Face" to "Muswell Hillbillies", I hold all those albums in the same high regard as all the Stones records from "Aftermath" to "Exile on Main Street", and all the Beatles records from "Rubber Soul" to "Let It Be".
@@YesterdaysPapers Absolutely about Ray and The Kinks' catalogue. As incredible as Lennon and McCartney or Jagger and Richards, Ray Davies had an astute penchant for getting into the soul of the mindset of the lower classes as well as a wonderful sense of humour towards so many different subjects, including brother Dave's taste in wardrobe. Sunny Afternoon is not only a fantastic song, it's a bittersweet look at divorce and acrimonious partings, with a self-conscious laugh at how it leaves some with nothing.
I discovered Dave Berry to be so much more than the sugary Mama. His stage shows are so wonderfully unique as he slinks his way from curtain to centre stage, all the while almost hiding from the spotlight while dangling his mic like a snake down his back and up his body. A true entertainer! I will add that only one performer owns The Crying Game and that is definitely Dave Berry.
Another brilliant video and I've certainly learnt something. What amazes me is how prolific Ray was during that period. How he managed to write, record, tour etc and then write additional quality songs for other artists is incredible. One of the best songwriters ever! Cheers again...Nigel
One problem, Ray was not as successful pitching songs to other artists as Lennon/McCartney. Most songs that Ray gave away, he would have been better to have recorded himself, rather than wasting them by giving them to inferior artists like Dave Berry.
Saw ray in the kings theatre in Glasgow round about 2012 it was a cracking night also seen Dave berry a couple of times as part of a sixties tour he was really well received in Glasgow his song mama was a big favourite
I always knew Ray’s songwriting was prolific but many of these were new to me. Your in-depth research into this era of music is truly commendable YP, particularly the acknowledgment of artists and bands that would otherwise have been lost forever. Exceptional video as always, thank you.

"Come Dancing" is a great tune. If he only wrote this one thats still a great career.
I love that one, though it’s sad, now, more than ever, imo, as a lot of the traditional English pubs are going the way of the pally/pallies, so I hear, and the touching Waterloo Sunset, too, especially. He’s definitely written some gems.
Another great late song that doesn't get the airplay of "Come Dancing" is "Better Things".
Victoria covered by The Fall was interesting then of course David Watts cover by The Jam.
Ray Davies is one of my favourite songwriters of all time. Always find myself humming one of his tunes even when I was too young to know who him or The Kinks were.. And in the face of some major competition like The Beatles, Stones or Who.
Like The Small Faces they were a little too bolshie for our American cousins to let loose on their youth and got kicked out. Unlike The Small Faces though, who dissolved, The Kinks eventually conquered North America.
Didn't realise so many people covered 'I Go To Sleep ". No one sings it better than Chrissie though.

Ray never wrote a bad song, which is very hard to say about any other song writer. I'm waiting patiently for a new Kinks album

Awesome video. The Kinks were part of my coming of age in the Sixties. Saw them live twice - the second time in 1980 at Oakland and they were absolutely fantastic. No just “playing the hits, Dave Davies just blew the place away with his guitar work - he is underrated as far as Im concerned. Thanks for this!

Very informative and enjoyable. I remember reading somewhere that Ray wrote "I'm Not Like Everybody Else" for The Animals, but they didn't record it. It's refreshing to hear some of the tunes I've only ever heard on bootlegged demos fleshed out recorded properly even if it is by another artist.

From what I remember, I think Rydell's cover of 'A World Without Love' actually overtook the original in both record sales and radio airplay in the regional markets of Rydell's hometown of Philadelphia, as well as in Pittsburgh on the opposite side of PA.
The Pretenders with Chrissie singing I Go To Sleep is just achingly beautiful. I always felt she was singing this from her heart to Ray at the time. Fascinating post, YP. I learn so much from you. Big thanks, mate.

Something about that song really goes deep in my heart. And of course Talk of the Town is wonderful too. I think those two songs also were about Ray. Chrissie is my favorite rock singer of the 80's. Fascinating video to watch, and as always impeccably researched! Always loved Ray’s songwriting, but had no idea he’d written so many songs for other artists. My favourite interpretation of one of his songs is the Pretenders version of ‘I Go To Sleep’… Chrissie Hynde’s uniquely dreamy vocals really do justice to it. ‘This Strange Effect’ by Dave Berry is also excellent… he was a very different type of performer for sure, doing all kinds of unusual things with the (invariably very long) microphone lead as I recall!
Yeah, Dave Berry was a great performer. I think both "I Go to Sleep" and "This Strange Effect" had an unusual dreamy, hypnotic quality.. Great vibe and atmosphere.
Who could forget Dave Berry with those strange, prehensile hands singing 'The Crying Game'?

Thanks for this one. You easily put a fantastic album of Ray Davies songs out that are not performed by the Kinks. I remember being ten when a KTEL comp add for a Kinks Greatest Hits comp came one TV and pestering my gladly obliging mother to get me the record. Ray Davies has been one of my favorite writers. Thanks for including the Dave Davies track, his collection of 60's singles proves he wasn't the only great writer in the Kinks. Cheers.

Not in the sixties. One of the reasons there are so many covers is probably the people getting paid were aggressively peddling them.

I remember years ago sitting on a balcony overlooking the dance floor in one of those old Victorian hotels. As l knocked back a pint , ‘ You Really Got Me’ started to blast from the speakers. The dance floor quickly filled with elderly line -dancers . They had a wail of time strutting their stuff to the Kinks’ classic. I remember thinking if Ray Davies could have witnessed this he would have been a happy guy. I remember him once stating in an interview that he wanted to write songs for people to sing in pubs.

The Kink’s driving beat which was constant in their early work was THE pulse of rock at the time.
Huge influence on proto-punk, that eventually inspired the punk movement that thrives to this very day. (I love The Secretions.)
Now, this was really interesting. I love the Kinks but never knew many artists covered Ray Davies' compositions. When you mentioned how the Honeycombs quickly became dated I thought of a 1983 MTV interview with Boy George when said the difference between Britain and the States is in the former music is a revolution and in the latter evolution.
Interesting that you mention Boy George 'cause he covered "The Crying Game" by Dave Berry in the 80s.

Another great cover of a Ray Davies song is "Dandy" as performed by Herman's Hermits. It fit Peter Noone's singing style to a tee. Kirsty MacColl did the definitive version of Ray's "Days". Kirsty is a much overlooked singer/songwriter who wrote some wonderful songs.
It's amazing how good that Hermits tune sounds, It's actually better than the Kinks original IMO.

@@stepheng8779 A person's opinion is just that: an opinion. I happen to like Kirsty's version of "Days" better than the Kinks version. I'm a huge Kinks fan but I have to give Kirsty the top spot on this one.
@@goplad1 You are correct that thinking Kirsty's is better is an opinion. But when you say that Kirsty's is "the definitive version", that's a little more than opinion. It implies that it is widely accepted by the general population that Kirsty's version is the best or most popular version of the song. The fact that many people would disagree with that statement casts doubt on Kirsty's being the definitive version.

More great archaeology. The Cascades, for instance, Rhythm of the Rain today still a universal earworm, I had no idea that the Pretenders song, ditto, was a Ray Davies composition. Of the "ones that got away" I am blown away by the "One Night Stand". While your 60s radio listeners pooh-poohed some new teen sensation, it's actually a supergroup of Kinks x Led Zep.
a uniquely british insight in ray's inimitable way... in this area he is unmatched by any songwriter of his ilk.

@@lindadote “No Milk Today” was always my favorite song. Not many know that John Paul Jones, later of Led Zeppelin, was the arranger. What with all those strings and bells. Saw Peter Noone perform a couple of years ago.
@@tomc642 …..I still think “No Milk Today” is a gorgeous piece and although a Graham Gouldman composition, JPJ’s arrangement (and naturally, Peter’s vocals) made it a timeless classic imo. The lyrics are charmingly old-fashioned and innocent but they still work for me. That’s cool you got to see Peter, I didn’t know he was still performing but I’m a bit out of touch these days.
Ray's songs are so unusual in that they both sound very much of their era, and yet not. We associate them instantly with the '60s but no one else - with the exception of his brother - did anything really like them. Them getting booted out of America was a real gift to us. I doubt they would have taken the direction they did if they'd been huge in the US.

I've been thinking alot about Ray lately. I'm concerned for his health. Dave had that stroke but seems pretty ok. He just released his second autobiography.
The last interview I saw with Ray he wasn't himself. Maybe he also had a stroke and kept it quiet? Or maybe early dementia?
I hate to bring this up because he means the world to me. Dave too.

There was a book, worth reading that Shel Talmy bought the rights to make into a film, this would have been the theme song.
Always loved the Honeycombs "Something Better Beginning" & "Emptiness", the Applejacks did a good job on "I go to sleep".
Bobby Graham played drums on all the early Kinks hits too. He was the Hal Blaine of the UK.

This was a great selection of Ray's songwriting which I really enjoyed. However, the Honeycombs had a hit with 'That's The Way' in August '65 which reached No.12 in the UK chart. This single was the follow-up to 'Something Better Beginning', which consequently wasn't their last hit..

Imagine my shock when it turned out that Ray Davies wrote the goofy song I saw on MST3K's "Catalina Caper" episode.

P.S. There's one thing I don't quite understand. Your photo of 'De Nederlandse Hitparade' reads Dave Berry's single on 1 in december 1965 and "Get Off My Cloud" by The Rolling Stones on 2. According to the Dutch Top 40 of 1965 Dave Berry's single reached number 1 in the week of October 23,1965 and stayed there for 3 weeks. It knocked "Satisfaction" by The Rolling Stones off the top spot which had been there for 6 weeks 🤔?

Ray once mentioned why they didn't marry-- apparently they were going to go to City Hall to tie the knot, but they became embroiled in a nasty fight and never got around to it.
I believe " Stop Your Sobbing " off of the Pretenders first album was penned by Ray Davies .

Never thought I'd see a reference to the movie, "Catalina Caper" which was a staple flick in the MST3k (Mystery Science Theater 3000) show run on Comedy Central in the 90's. That movie also had a performance from Little Richard, who looked like he was in an altered state while singing the tune.
I immediately thought of the MST3K treatment of "Catalina Caper" with the Cascades! Really the only way to watch that movie.
I re-watched that MST3K recently.
Ray Davies was no doubt _the_ quintessential idiosyncratic English wordsmith. I wish Syd could've had his output.

Was funny to see some Spanish versions of Ray's songs. By the way, in 1968, the Spanish star ''Karina'' had a huge hit with the song ''Las Flechas del Amor'' (''The Arrows of Love'')... Now I find out that it was a cover of ''Little Arrows'' by Leapy Lee! 🤣🤣🤣6:42

I've been a Kinks fan since the Dark Ages, but IMAO, their best song was written by Ray's brother Dave: "Death of a Clown".
The Kinks we're the Best songswriters in UK they were inducted into the Rock and roll hall of fame..without a having a #1 song in USA !!! Underrated???
