I would agree but I think it has more to do with the changing culture, we won't see another wrestler like him again because we won't see an era like the attitude era ever again.
He left as many legends as he could in his wake. Wrestlers like Triple H, Orten, Edge. This is why we need wrestlers willing to pass the torch, and why long term champions, like Reigns, are the worst thing this business will ever see.
falling on cushions doesn't exactly hurt that bad, now the 2nd fall was slightly worse and harder surface but the ring has a spring under it that dampens all force that hits it. it basically a trampoline or mattress with a sheet of particle board on top of it. Way, WAY different on the phone compared to in person because when he speaks, there's a low, raspy quality to his droll. Since a phone can't really capture that, it sounds higher. I almost failed to recognize it if his name hadn't come up on screen to remind me it was him talking.

@@THED4RKPHARA0H "will somebody stop the damn match!” And I've always got the feeling that in this match, even if in no other, JR meant every word of what he said.
Man, I didn’t think I’d be sitting here wiping tears from my eyes at 41 years old, when I watched this live at 16 years old & my emotions were completely different. I guess it comes down to knowing how much pain that Mick lives with, to this day.
“Maybe we can fool people into thinking we had a great match.” Lol. Taker couldn’t do much wrestling due to an injured foot and so to make up for it Foley decided he would do HUGE bumps to sell it all. Those bumps could have killed him a couple of times. Amazing and unforgettable.
According to Mick Foley's book, It was actually Terry Funk's idea that the match will start on top of the cell and Mick liked the idea haha. But man, look at the face of Funk trying to stop Mick when he was going to climb for the 2nd time, he was genuinely concerned and Terry Funk is another Hardcore Legend himself. That shows how tough Mick Foley is
It’s really a blessing that Mick is still here with us after putting his body through so much punishment. Had the pleasure of meeting him in Philly back in 99.
Mick is the type of man who wanted to entertain people with his death defying stunts. And yet he refuses to go down after being hurt. Although it shortened his career in the ring, he went on to do better and bigger things like being a commissioner.
When Vince told Mick “You have no idea how much I appreciate you what you done for this company. But I never want to see anything like that again.” I really felt that. Mick literally put his life on the line with not one but two massive bumps
DjFluffy: they may have done so already. not everything backstage has to be shown to us u know. they deserve privacy. And Taker’s got a reputation for being one of the most private people on Earth aside from myself.
It’s become unfashionable to say these days but I still think this might be the greatest WWE match of all time. You can show it to anyone and they will be captivated. The drama and storytelling of it is underrated. It was also a real big part of the WWE moving further away from WCW in the ratings. It established that anything could happen on their TV or PPV.
JR made you believe what you were watching was real, he gave it believability. I've watched him on AEW and it's not the same JR as the attitude era. "Will somebody stop the damn match!"
Everything was great and on point back then. You would've never been bored even by watching mid card matches. That was Pro Wrestling. Pro Wrestling now, is all about a war (The IWC), all about the Indie Scene and all about kids show (WWE sometimes). Although i began liking the product again because of the faction Storyline & The Becky Vs Charlotte storyline, i think it needs more than that if they want to get the views going. If the Attitude Era was about to come back, even thinking about it, you'd go and watch wwe and enjoy it. Im not saying that i don't enjoy it rn. We all as fans do. We all have our faves and least faves. And that's all.
Mick is the peak of physical performance in any media. He put his heart mind and body in the ring. A tooth ended up through his lip and up his nose The announce table had no airbags then, the ring is just a mat on top of wood and steel poles. That’s it Nearly snapped his neck, broke his spinal chord, and killed himself just to put on a show And in the middle and aftermath, he was just smiling He was and still is the toughest performer in any media of art.
I will NEVER forget watching this live when it happened! I was 14 and back in the heyday of the attitude era we used to buy every ppv and a lot of our cousins and friends would come and everyone would chip in for the ppv and pizzas or whatever. What an amazing time that was for wrestling and in my life. IMO, the best era of wrestling ever.
Yea me to. As kids me and my little brother and like 4 of my cousins watched this and couldn't believe what we saw. I used to hate Mankind but after this I had mad respect and loved the Mick Foley character. Especially when it was him and The Rock. Rock n Sock connect
The best match in all of Professional Wrestling. No match will ever compete with this. I remember this like it was yesterday. And I still get goosebumps when I watch it, every single time!!
I remember reading Mick Foley's book"Have a nice day", so I knew his history of being in high pain matches. This match and hearing the details increase my respect for the Undertaker. He was notorious for being a safe wrestler. So what he said about being on the top of the cell and choke slamming Mick Foley threw the cell added to that. If his footing were not on solid ground, both of them would have been seriously injured as opposed to minor injuries for mankind and he was able to show up not long after.
This match shocks me the same way every single time I watch it. Even when you know what’s coming. The commentary from JR & King is spot on & perfectly capture what it was like watching this the first time. “Good God almighty! They killed him! As God as my witness, he is broken in half!” “How in the Hell is he standing?!” “Good God! Good God! Will somebody stop the damn match?! Enough is enough!” “If someone… wants to get off their butt.. and stop the damn match!” And King’s “That’s it, he’s dead” The whole thing was so cool but it’s also a little traumatizing. Mick Foley literally put his life on the line for your entertainment
And what this video doesn't show you is that both Foley and Taker went out later in the evening to interfere in the main event (a First Blood match between Austin and Kane for the WWF Championship). Unbelievable.
all things considered, this has to be the greatest match in pro wrestling history ... by a longshot ... the faces of panic and shock and fear on the faces of the audience tell the story
Though that match was amazing, we could have seen the end of Mick Foley. I never want to see any wrestler put in that much jeopardy again. It may have been Mick's idea, but nobody should want to sacrifice as much as he did that night.
@5:50 Oh man, Undertaker... Imagine his concern for Mick Foley and at the same time to be in the character.. What pressure man, what pressure... Just brilliant these guys were.

As cliche as it sounds, this really is probably one of my favorite matches of all time. I mean it should be one of everyone’s favorites just out of respect for Mick Foley almost killing himself and the Undertaker wrestling with a broken foot! What legends, man. Absolute, utter legends.
I remember renting it on VHS from the video store and watching it at home. I was floored! I rewound it so many times. I'll never forget it. You're right it's definitely one to remember
Even after the curtain had been pulled away from kayfabe, this is still my favorite match of all time. I thought Foley was dead, or at least paralyzed.

THIS is the kind of content WWE should upload on their CZcams Channel on a regular basis. It is so incredible to see this match from different angles. It is videos like this that make me miss how Hell in a Cell was portrayed as a gruesome match in the past as opposed to what it is right now. Phenomenal video and I am glad to be able to watch this.
“You have no idea how much I appreciate what you’ve done for this company, but I never wanna see anything like that again.” That shows how risky and self mutilating at the cost of making a memorable match Mick can create. Mick is truly an entertainer, caution to the wind just to make people cheer and react. That’s why I’ve always loved him, when mick is on screen, you know you’re getting a show.

I'll tell you what: For a few seconds I was seriously thinking that Lawlor might be right. At least the announce table gives and breaks. The mat wad hard as a rock according to most guys who wrestled back then.

Mick Foley getting off the stretcher with that manic smile and climbing up the cell again is just the most badass thing ever captured on film. Just unreal.
This made Mick Foly a living Legend. What that man has done for wrestling is unfathomable. I don’t think we will every see a wrestler like him again.
@@superbaas8822 i agree. Changing of belts is what makes following wrestling interesting. Havent been a follower in over a decade now
How the heck can someone take two massive falls like that and then start a wrestling match? Mick is truly one of a kind.
he's a MAN kind
Yeah, the tooth sticking out of his nose did it for me.
falling on cushions doesn't exactly hurt that bad, now the 2nd fall was slightly worse and harder surface but the ring has a spring under it that dampens all force that hits it. it basically a trampoline or mattress with a sheet of particle board on top of it. The chair and everything else probably did more damage..
@@KunzMobile please let me chuck you off that and tell me if it doesn’t hurt 😂
@@KunzMobile nah the rings still hurt pretty bad to bump on there isn't a lot of padding under and there's still a layer of wood and the metal supports under the padding and it definitely wouldn't help with that fall fr
Wow, Undertaker's real voice versus his character voice is way different
Way, WAY different on the phone compared to in person because when he speaks, there's a low, raspy quality to his droll. Since a phone can't really capture that, it sounds higher. I almost failed to recognize it if his name hadn't come up on screen to remind me it was him talking.
David Adams 😂😂😂 he sounded like some nickelodeon character on the phone
Maybe why in his start of career they didn't see promise in him (as a mic guy) and he just needed to find a character right for him - cue Eggman- I mean Undertaker
You know?
@vincentrich - Banned But Not Forgotten and that Bike. was gorgeous af.
I will NEVER forget this match. I bought this in VHS from the local video store, and watched it probably 1,000 times and was in awe from start to finish every single time. Simply amazing stuff, these two gentlemen are just legends
The fact that during the final 3 count he was still able to kick! What a monster Mick Foley is!
“good god that killed him. as god is my witness, he’s broken in half”

Lol. Taker couldn’t do much wrestling due to an injured foot and so to make up for it Foley decided he would do HUGE bumps to sell it all. Those bumps could have killed him a couple of times. Amazing and unforgettable.
Mick was a master of ring psychology.
Technically, he only planned on the one bump. That second fall wasn't planned.
By bumps u mean making several attempts to mortally wound himself the yes bumps
According to Mick Foley's book, It was actually Terry Funk's idea that the match will start on top of the cell and Mick liked the idea haha.
But man, look at the face of Funk trying to stop Mick when he was going to climb for the 2nd time, he was genuinely concerned and Terry Funk is another Hardcore Legend himself. That shows how tough Mick Foley is
It’s really a blessing that Mick is still here with us after putting his body through so much punishment. Had the pleasure of meeting him in Philly back in 99.
I've seen this masterpiece of a match over 40 times and I still get chills and adrenaline everytime I watch it.
This is honestly getting me emotional who ever produced this deserves an award, it really does show why pro wrestling is amazing.
Mick is the type of man who wanted to entertain people with his death defying stunts. And yet he refuses to go down after being hurt. Although it shortened his career in the ring, he went on to do better and bigger things like being a commissioner.

your wish has been granted!
Mick said it best; this match will outlive both him and the Undertaker. Iconic.
I think the greatness of Jim Ross is often unappreciated
He's back doing what he does best AEW
the best ever
Marcus he elevated the match to another level alone!
My God could you imagine if Michael Cole was calling that match 🤮
I was so happy to hear him on AEW.
Thank you Foley and Undertaker for this match.
Not only can you hear the absolute terror in JRs voice but seeing him backstage beside he’s friend really shows how much JR thinks of Mick.
Jim Ross always made moments seem 2x more real and intense !! Haven’t watched wrestling since 2011 miss these times !
JR made you believe what you were watching was real, he gave it believability. I've watched him on AEW and it's not the same JR as the attitude era. "Will somebody stop the damn match!"
"They''ve killed him" that is why Jim Ross is the greatest
Don't forget when Jerry lawyer said that's it he's dead lol
AS GOD IS MY WITNESS HE IS BROKEN IN HALF
WILL SOMEBODY STOP THE DAMN MATCH?! ENOUGH'S ENOUGH!
