I was there.. section a-14 or a-12 on the side Mankind went off the top through the announcers table. I was 13. Ended up meeting Foley a year later at a meet and greet.

I can't wait to see your review on KOTR 2001. DDP getting squash by undertaker. Shane McMahon vs Kurt Angie street fight. And. Booker T debut attacking Stone Cold. And your thoughts on the whole ppv. Including so many injuries. Kurt Angie breaking his tail bone in the match with Shane. Benoit breaking his neck suplexing Jericho off the top turnbuckle and landing in his head. And. Booker T breaking Austin's hand. When he put him through the announcers table.

KOTR 1998 was a solid show. Shamrock winning the tournament was the right call he needed it more than Rock. Xpac Owen was a solid match but I thought their match at kotr 94 was better. The hell in a cell was a spectacle but props to Mankind for the bumps he took. Austin Kane for the wwf title wasn’t bad but it was sort of a shame that Kane only had a one day title reign.

Due to not having been alive at the time, my only recollection of this match was having watched it several times on Taker’s Tombstone DVD set growing up. I was very happy later on to realize that Mankind was one of a few personas, meaning that I was seeing the exact same guy in the ring in 2006. I probably wasn’t far off, but I was relieved to know this wasn’t the real life version of that guy that hustled Spongebob and Patrick when they were trying to sell chocolate bars.

  • @FreeSpeechArtandWrestling

I was a kid in the 90s, and I grew up in a household of no violent television, so it actually wasn’t until the late 90s I knew what professional wrestling was because my parents kept me very sheltered and I didn’t have a lot of friends growing up.
I remember going to middle school and seeing a lot of people imitate wrestling moves and this was 1999. One hours in elementary school around fifth grade I saw everybody with South Park T-shirts in 99, Pokémon cards and stone cold Steve Austin T-shirts in 1999 and 2000.
It sucks that I missed this match at the time and didn’t experience the context. I saw this match and what happened maybe five years ago, but it was very impressive and cool. It’s actually the match I’ve watched from beginning to and more than any other wrestling match.
I liked what my friend said who was a former professional wrestler. The wrestler answer to what happen is that what Mick Foley did was a huge risk, he risked is life, Not paralyzing himself so he would never dance with his daughter on her wedding day, And also his wife could’ve easily divorced him because his lifestyle is too upsetting for his children.
It’s also really sad knowing that if he did kill himself on the hell in a cell, there would’ve been no Owen Hart doing that stunt.
It’s definitely a very important match in a very controversial match

  • @MrRed88

The one thing people don't talk about enough when it comes to Foley's performance that night was how his night wasn't over after the Hell in a Cell. People forget he came out during the next match and still ate a chair shot and a stunner or two (can't remember how many exactly), and another stunner off air. I feel it's a criminally overlooked part of his performance that night.
The show overall was actually pretty damn good, not just the obvious match. Shamrock was a good King of the Ring and the main event was pretty damn good and underrated (except for it only being the beginning of Kane's one dat title reign). I don't know, maybe I'm just biased because it involves my two childhood favorites but Austin and Kane had some good chemistry. They could put on a good match even from a match quality perspective.

I totally agree about Shamrock, a victim of his era, he clearly could have been a HW champ in a weaker era.
I also agree about the legacy of this match not being only positive. Look at all the indie hardcore bs and how a guy like Abyss (who could be a character, see lawyer Park and a legit Monster heel) always felt the need to take some huge bumps and do some crazy hardcore stuff.

Looking forward to his review of 1999. Similar to how the quality dipped from Wrestlemania 14 to 15, I’m curious to how he reviews probably the most groundbreaking KOTR ppv to reviewing one of the worst KOTR ppvs

1999 imo was not a good year for the WWE. there are some really good moments/matches, but if you take a step back and look at 99 as a whole, its mostly hokey and bad. WWE is really fortunate that WCW was starting to shit the bed at this time.

I don't particularly agree with putting it all on Foley or this match for the way the business has gone. Not his fault that a bunch of wrestlers started losing the plot and forget it's about telling a story and not popping some mark internet personality in his basement studio.

2001 KOTR was pretty close to as good as 1998 KOTR.. KOTR 98 had one of the worst matches I ever witnessed which was AL Snow and Head vs Too Much aka Too Cool, however there were two great matches on that ppv which were that HIAC and the Ken Shamrock vs The Rock

I don't know if Shamrock winning the king of the ring was the right choice. Probably should have been the Rock. Shamrock turned heel shortly after and had mid card fueds where the Rock would turn face shortly after this and then turn heel again at survivor series 98 when he won the wwf title.

I really appreciate OTRSCENTRAL talking about the controversy of this match. Many people will focus on the positive, but I do agree with what he said as the negatives, inspired a generation of wrestlers and fans thinking that if they do off-the-wall violent moves or bumps, It’s a claim to fame. A lot of people will be very positive about this match, but it takes real courage to talk about Negatives to some thing very well received

Foley is garbage. All these ECW wrestlers like Tommy Dreamer who want to throw themselves off balconies, barb wire.. explosives stuff like this is not needed in wrestling.
Wrestling is scripted and when you do the moves it's supposed to be fake and you aren't supposed to hurt yourself.
I totally agree Foley is a huge negative and he's crap.

  • @thomasrodriguez86293

That's why wrestling is dead today. AEW is nothing. NXT killed WWE. Fact 100% a bunch of jobbers everywhere. Truth is undefeated and never lies. Deal with it and. These hypocrites on here say it's great. But complain about it afterwards. Afterwards. So stupid. Because these wrestlers today are garbage. They suck. Remember 2013. Daniel jobber Bryan vs Orton on a random raw throughout the night. What happened? That's right. The viewship went down. Why. Because Daniel Jobber. Is garbage. Terrible.
