  • Northern Cafe was chosen bt Yelp Review as the best restaurant in Canada in 2023. Northern Cafe is located in a lumberyard in Vancouver, B.C. It has been in business since 1949 and is one of the oldest restaurants in Vancouver.
The present owner is Jimmy Mah, who has operated the Northern Cafe for the 15 years. His son Raymond Mah, came back to the restaurant after being away for 19 years, working in corporate jobs in the food industry. Raymond is a trained red seal chef.
Northern Cafe is famous for serving Chinese comfort food, such as Their Special Chow Mein and Wor Wonton Soup.
The Special Chow Mein at the Northern Cafe is served dry style, which means it is stir fried without adding any sauce poured over the noodles. This style of noodles was common many years ago in Chinese restaurants.
"Wor" wonton soup means it could contain anything and everything. The Wor Wonton Soup is served with grilled prawns and broccoli.
The Northern Cafe also serves many western comforts foods, such as their pancakes and eggs benedict. They make most of their dishes from scratch, including sauces, using fresh ingredients. Their fries are made homestyle by hand peeling and cutting the potatoes.
The first Chinese Canadian Judge, Randall Wong ate here with his family. HIs mom and dad owned the Ovaltine Cafe. Judge Wong worked at the Ovaltine Cafe when he was a teenager. The Ovaltine Cafe opened in 1942 and is still operating today.

I hope you get a chance to visit this restaurant in Vancouver. What restaurants would you recommend in Nova Scotia, if I ever get to visit Nova Scotia? Thanks for checking out my video.

I tried it, found it to be really expensive and honestly nothing special. Maybe my experience was a one off.

I would think it's more of a quirky experience that is the main attraction of this restaurant. Although they make a lot of their food from scratch, this restaurant serves the old style cooking which may or may not be an attraction for customers. Thanks for commenting and thanks for checking out my video.

I dropped by for lunch. Food was good but not great AND I thought not cheap for the surrounds and for the taste! No idea about the hype?

I think it might be more for the nostalgia of what restaurants used to be like. From what I understand, most of the food is made from scratch. Thanks for checking out my video.

I hope things are better for you. Generally if someone has a GoFundMe campaign going, and I think it's worth promoting, I will post a video. Or if you have a cause which I can give publicity to. I wish you all the best. Thanks for viewing my video.
