      You won't do it for 12 total if you include wine. Also their totals included buying entire containers of some things like the spices and oil that you would get additional uses from.

      Right? Like, I'm sure the math checks out (the wine, the olive oil, the herbs and spices) but that really does punctuate how much costs have inflated, when graduating from Hamburger helper to homemade spaghetti is hitting middle class.

      Cost per serving is what really matters here. As long as that number stays about $4 it's worth the upfront cost. That said, it wasn't too long ago that number would be halved. There's a lot of really great (and depressing) research out there showing the cost per serving for the average household through the years

    I have been hoping someone could do a “budget bites” series where people living in a food desert can cook healthy items from dollar stores. Would love a frozen fish that taste good episode. I think mythical kitchen is the perfect group and would do amazing with this concept!

      Frozen fish/seafood makes amazing gumbo or bouillabasse. Don't thaw it before cooking also helps.

      Honestly, frozen fish/seafood is almost always better unless you are less than an hour or two from the place where it's caught. I'm not saying that's the quality you'd find in a food desert, but that's usually what you'll find, as long as it's frozen and thawed properly.

    I like how the total is with all the items purchased and not per meal cost. Because lets say you don’t have any of those ingredients you get to see the actual price difference.

      Per meal always feels so deceptive to me, especially as I struggle with conceptualizing numbers. Price for all of the ingredients is just way more accurate to how it will affect your bank account

      @@CocoumKelsPerson In general, know what your breasts feel like normally, and document any changes. Specifically, hard lumps are something to look out for.
      And make sure to check all the way to under your armpits!

    Whole Foods exists to sell an image, period.
    Unless you're talking about literally the highest quality most expensive ingredients you can find, the skill of the person preparing the food is always going to be the most important thing to its flavor.

      I actually remember Whole Foods before it was Amazon...in the 80s it was a more of a health food store/whole grain store. Now its just trendy, high price.

      What about their sources though? I'm not American, so idk. about Whole Foods, but I usually pay more for ingredients, because for example I don't want to contribute to the mistreatment of chickens. So often it's not about the taste, it's about responsible sourcing.

      I've found they're close/same on some items, especially sales, for things like meat and produce, but are much higher on some packaged items.

      It really depends though! Sporked is right, it doesn't have to be expensive these days. For basics especially, esp the 365 line, it's exactly the same as the cheaper grocery stores, and often with more ethical and environmentally friendly sourcing.

    I love Trevor's singing and his cute apron! Also, I think two potentially enlightening meals to make this way would be a salad and something with steak. The salad doesn't get cooked so the difference in the ingredients might stand out more, and steak is just something that people are really picky about and usually spend more.

    We occasionally get heirloom tomatoes at The 99, along with a large variety of fresh produce. I've sold cherimoya, pomelos, Meyer lemons, jackfruit, brussels sprouts on the stem. We've been getting a ton of dragonfruit this last few weeks. If you live near a 99, it's really worth checking out what's available, our produce will surprise you.

      also to note each 99 cents only gets slightly different items including produce. I get great mushrooms etc at the 99. I've also noticed at mine it's normally mostly grown in my state

    In Australia, retailers have to put both the price and value by volume to make it easier to compare prices eg. $0.63 per 100g or $1.23 per 1000ml.

      I find I tend to get better quality meat and cheese. The flavor is there, so you can use less.
      My ex objected to this when we first met. Then he tasted my pasta sauce, chili, stew and realized if the meat is flavorful it can be used more like a condiment than the main component. Some guests we had reacted the same way and he would just say "Taste it. If you don't like it I'll go get you anything else you want." I don't recall anyone ever asking for something else.

      I've found that it actually doesn't matter. I used to live a regularly boogie lifestyle of buying stuff that was expensive just because I thought that meant it was better. In all reality it comes down to the taste of the individual. If you really think something tastes better, then do it because you should eat what you enjoy.

    On a budget I find buying quality matters most in protein and ingredients like olives where the flavor pops in the dish. Also buy quality on items you know you'll use not an ingredient for that one recipe you wanna try.😊

      They listed the price for an entire bottle of milk, bottle of oil, whole containers of cheese and seasonings...the spaghetti cost doesn't account for the fact that they have a lot of pantry ingredients left.

      Its $54 for the entire shopping list, if you're buying everything from scratch, and look at the amount of food it made. Ya'll are acting like you're paying $54 for a two person meal. There are only a few ingredients you're entirely using up: ground beef, tomatoes and spaghetti.

      Let’s just say you have a pantry full of regular ingredients. For an average (not gourmet) spaghetti, you would most likely only need to buy noodles, ground beef, and spaghetti sauce. Give or take a few ingredients. That’s only about $15 - $20

    I actually found this such an interesting episode, it's funny and daft because it's Mythical Kitchen, but also topical and useful. I'd love to see a full series of it (particularly using everyday recipes that people might be trying to make economically!)

    Garlic doesn’t split unless the clove gets below 5 degrees Celsius either before planting or during first weeks of growth. Granny puts hers in the fridge before planting every year now :)

    a trick to mixing meatball meatloaf etc is to put the ingredients into a mixer and use the dough hook attachments... it mixes it quite well without getting your hands dirty

    Amazing! I love to cook. I shop at Walmart a lot, buy generic or cheap brands. People always say it tastes so good. But when they ask what brands or ingredients I buy, they are disappointed. Like that can't be it. Just learn to season your food and you can make cheap stuff taste great! 😊

    What I usually do for pasta is Prego meat sauce with angel hair. Added to the sauce is a bit of brown sugar. If I have extra time, will make the pasta fresh.

    SortedFoods has shown that knowledge is better than cost. You just have to know what select few items elevate your food. Spend on those (cheeses, some meats, etc) and go cheap for the rest (like canned/frozen veg)

    Idk I love a Stelvin closure on a wine bottle, it’s easier to open, and there’s no chance of the cork rotting and the wine turning or going rancid. More fancier wines are using it nowadays IMO it’s not gauche anymore

      The problem is most people have the shelf stable stuff already in their kitchens IE oils, salts, dried herbs, etc. which is where the bulk of the costs come from.
      Generally you'd pick up the meat, cheeses, wine, pasta, and toms/sauce.
      You're literally over thinking this.

    As a German, these groceries prices are really shocking to me. Normal grocery stores cost way less even than the 99ct store here and even adjusted for currencies. We also had a lot of inflation in grocery prices lately, but we are generally way cheaper with our groceries than all our neighbouring countries.

    One big difference that is behind the scenes.... The chickens that produced that Whole Foods egg with the darker yolk was more than likely treated A LOT better than the $0.99 store chicken. This is something I choose to consider when shopping.

      But so much of what they bought they only used a fraction of but listed the full price of purchasing it. Like 1 egg from the $5 dozen. The wine, spices, breadcrumbs, olive oil, etc., all had most of the full package left over. It would have been good if they ultimately fractioned out the price for each full recipe at the end.
