  • Independent paramilitary groups have a long tradition in Poland. Since Russia moved into Ukraine, these groups have seen membership triple to about 80,000. By comparison, the Polish Armed Forces are 120,000 soldiers strong.
VICE Germany visited their neighbor to find out more about these independent militias. Polish paramilitary groups have training and patriotism on par with the Polish army. We accompany trainers, weekend warriors and the so-called uniform students to see how Poland is prepared to defend itself from invasion.

Poland - the nation of warriors; very impressive to be honest. It is even more impressive to see Polish women be part of self-defense forces. I can see a bright future for this country on many fronts: geopolitically, economically, and socially where neo-Marxist ideologies of the West find it hard to penetrate Polish societies unlike Germans, Dutch, Spanish, and French, not to mention Scandinavia.

They just did what they had to do to stay "Poland". They were also the first East Bloc country to recover after the Soviet Union collapsed. Hopefully they've learned a thing or two about being ready for invasion. It could happen again from either direction.

In Russia our government also likes to behave like "Don't you know that NATO is close? Now those who are against governemnt are probably traitors, you should support us or USA will come". Great, I know that NATO is close and don't like that fact, but this is no reason to ignore behavior of our government, for now they are more threat to Russia than any USA. Poland can have paramilitary because they dont think like my fellow romanian compatriots do. Here in Romania peoples in majority think something like: "ohh we dont wanna get caught in the middle of corrupted politician's wars, we dont wanna fight for others" and it's pathetic coz they also wanna have peace... and we have the same troubled history as Polish peoples had, especially with russians. Too bad we no longer share border like we did until Ribbentrop-Molotov agreement. We even used to have common military drills back in the 30s preparing because we were affraid of USSR.. Offcourse that didnt helped us much but at least today we can be sure the West learned some lessons from history and they will help us to resist. We gotta admit it without our allies we cannot survive. We can fight thats true and polish patriotism can assure the enemy that invasion will be a very painful experience. I'm pretty sure of that. ;)

These guys are so inspiring. It is really nice to see Polish really care about their country. But I think the process is cumbersome and expensive. It would be cheaper if they just learn how to make IED and explosive traps. When you will fight major power like Russia( or any other power that are stronger than yours) . Asymmetric warfare is the best. As we have seen in Afghanistan, Eroq and Sham. IED, sabotage and kidnapping is way to go. Low budget, not too hassle to learn but delivers strategic impact to the outcome of the war.

I disagree in teaching asymmetric warfare methods to paramilitary reserve forces in peacetimes. Those methods should be reserved to Military professionals that will teach those guerilla methods to militias in war times. I believe that having the Para forces exercising in their home territory(as shown in the episode) is a better way.

    Germans Germans....
I'm Polish with not too bad English and their translation to English from Polish is not really precise....
Secondly, Germans have forgotten what mens being 'patriotic' simply they're scared of country being military stronger than their 180k 'professional army' which is only 20k bigger than Polish one and based on not really 'addatable to the situation people'. Also, they gear is pretty much as good as Polish so they are in woods slowly..... Polish kids being brought to all sort of military days, sitting on the tanks.

Germans are standing critical to their country, the reflect on the past and on the bad things they did to many countries for example your country Poland. Me as a German who had nothing to do with ww2 can't be proud of his country, in a way other countries could, because too much patriotism isn't helping anyone. And comparing your Army against the German Army in strenght and gear is so stupid. The polish goverment buys a lot of vehicles and Weponds like the Leopard 2 from Germany. (Just look in the Video, the 2 girls playing in it). We as Europe should rather stay together, because those countrys alone aren't strong.

That wasn't the only blunder in their translation, but that is to be expected from someone who translates from one foreign language to another and isn't *really* good at both of those languages. EVERYBODY in Poland who has clear criminal record and is psychically sane can own and carry a gun. Of course, you need a firearms licence. But when you are not a recorded criminal and not a recorded mental disorder patient or recorded drug or alcohol addicted person - you get the license WHENEVER YOU WANT. The main and significant diference is that in all other european states the authorities CAN (but in no way have to) give you a firearms licence and in Poland the authorities HAVE TO, THEY ARE OBLIGED BY LAW TO give you the firearms licence - if only you want to. This is a very significant diference. Sport firearms licence, collectors firearms licence, hunting firearms licence - whatever you want. And you can own and carry WHATEVER YOU WANT. Semi-auto AK, semi-auto AR, 30-rounds magazines, 75-rounds magazines, belt feded guns, shotguns with shortened barels - whatever you like and can afford to you. No restriction at all. The only one quasi restriction is about the full-auto guns, but it is also possible to get a licence for them, only it is much much more expensive and costs much much more efforts (like for example having an extra weapons storage building. But if you really want, you can). All muzzle loaders, for example six-shooters revolvers like Colt or Remington cal. .44 so the muzzle energy about double as the 9mm Glock are LICENCE FREE in Poland. Everybody can go to the next gun store and buy without any licence so many muzzle loaded shotguns, revolvers, revolver carbines as he can carry. Now, in 2020 the number of trained paramilitary units members in Poland is much higher than stated in the film. Nobody knows very exactly the number but there are most likely about a quarter million of private soldiers, male and female. And the most significant diference to the most western europe armies is that these polish private soldiers are doing this NOT for money. It is not their job. It is their duty. In case of it would make a real significant diference to the west european armies. Snowflakes have mostly a hard life in Poland, oh yes.

I think every young man should have some sort of training in combat; men tend to do stupid things when they are unsure of themselves and feel like they need to prove something to others. Most guys in the military feel confident in their abilities and it becomes like a sort of deterrent to crime. It may sound counter intuitive but when you arm people and give them responsibility like in Switzerland and some regions of America there tends to be a lot less crime and people are more productive and friendly.
