The Russians Are Coming: NATO's Frontier

  • In the wake of events in Ukraine, NATO has turned its attention towards countries that border the Russian Federation - attempting to boost its quick-response capabilities in Europe. In September, the alliance agreed to create a 5,000-strong rapid reaction Spearhead Force, which will be capable of deploying across the continent within 48-hours of a military incursion. VICE News joined several thousand NATO troops in western Poland, for the first deployment test of the "Very High Readiness Joint Task Force."
    According to the premise of the exercise, Poland and the Baltics were under threat from the fictional state of “Bothnia” - a master of conventional and hybrid warfare. NATO forces had been ordered to deploy, and quickly, to Poland.
    During the deployment test, NATO’s top diplomat Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg flew in to watch its progress. He told VICE News that NATO was undertaking “the biggest reinforcement of our collective defense since the end of the Cold War.”
    While in Poland, VICE News filmed with non-governmental paramilitary groups, which are training young Polish people to defend their towns and cities in the event of a foreign-backed assault. Participation in paramilitaries has reportedly increased since Russia’s seizure of the Crimean Peninsula.
    We also traveled north, to visit the border that Poland shares with the heavily armed Russian territory of Kaliningrad. This spring, Poland built six high-tech watchtowers along the 125-mile border.

    • @Bushflare
      @Bushflare Před 8 lety +37

      Norderstal To be fair, it's not actually all that complex. The invasion of Ukraine is a power-play in a number of ways. To give Russia the strategic presence it feels it needs, to stop power entering the hands of the EU, to demonstrate to the rabid, war-hungry right-wing in Russia that their leader is a powerful man that is not cowed by foreign powers, to demonstrate to the world that Russia is definitely a threat that must be treated (and respected) as such.
      The annexation of crimea came with misinformation, shady tactics, demonstrably invasive actions by Russia, and multiple avoidable homicides. Had it been a simple democratic vote from the Crimeans then I personally would have no qualms with it. If people want to secede then it's their right to do so. That's the land they live on. But no, this was an opportunistic act of war to secure military assets and land during a state of political upheval where it was demonstrably clear the people of Ukraine largely did not want to cosy up to Russia half as much as the heavily corrupt government did.
      If the Crimeans wanted to be annexed then Russia could just go about starting that democratic process. If the Crimeans said yes 'THEN' it would be fine to reinforce them militarily. But no, it played out very differently and it was clear that Putin had no intention of being peaceful from the start. He would force his will onto Ukraine as a whole through corruption, and failing that he would take as much of it as he could in the confusion and damned be the consequences.
      I have similar feelings about the situation between Israel and Palestine. The Palestinians live there. It is their land. Israel has no right to take it and they are steamrolling on in with military force and clear disregard for human life.
      I would like to see a comprehensive video from the Russian side, but it won't be complicated, and it won't be well justified.

    • @user-qm5hw2me3v
      @user-qm5hw2me3v Před 8 lety +2

      Norderstal There is absolutely no objective reasons for war between Russia and the West. I think that there are powerful people on both sides are still living in Cold War paradigm, when they have this idea that the opposing side is the enemy and cannot be trusted fixed deep inside their minds. It especially applies to Russia since it after 70 years of communism and isolation has been having hard time integrating into global economic system and accepting democratic and liberal values. Plus, Putin is crazy, like literally he's paranoid KGB agent still living in the 70-80's seeing spies and "fifth column" everywhere.
      But you know what - the West is also to blame for this situation, they really needed to do so much more in order to help Russia. This process cannot be one-sided. It's the same thing that is happening with Ukraine these days - most of the support for changes is only empty words. The West does not want to do anything, it't not ready to make any sacrifices in order to help Ukraine. Even financial help - it's all bullshit, repeating what happened to Greece: taking new credits to repay the old ones while the economy stagnates. Promises, promises, promises is all Ukraine has been getting since 2004 and Russia since 1991 or earlier. So, I am not surprised Russia got tired of it and Ukraine will, you will see when the far-right groups will seize the power there.

    As a journalist taking a selfie is so irresponsible in that situation. You are there to report on a increasingly serious situation that has the capability of changing or ending the world as we know it and you take a selfie on the border of it all. Those guards are there to escort you and make sure you do not break any rules and you waste their time by taking a selfie when they could be doing something important with their time. You received dirty looks for a reason, take a hint!
    Edit: Just wanted to add that you can do better Vice, this "reporter" is a waste of your time and money and is treading on the professionalism established by journalists that go out to places in the world such as this.

      Tom Hanson Exaggerate much? What incredibly useful things could those border guards have done in the 10 seconds it took her to take the selfie?

    • @gilpcity
      @gilpcity Před 8 lety +43

      Zigi Samblak This is not a comedy show Zigi. Those guards have jobs to do, they don't want to have to escort a journalist around. Especially not one who keep's pestering them about Russia with question after question. Sure, ask about Russia, but when they dodge you're question's don't keep asking the same questions! She takes a selfie and sets off a alarm on the border. How can you even sugar coat such unprofessionalism? I don't think you understand the severity of this situation, which is pretty sad because you have a Ukrainian flag as you're profile photo. Russia and NATO are militarizing on the border. Militarization is never a good thing, it starts small and grows huge quick. Threat's to put nuclear capable weaponry on the border in range of Warsaw is at the least a little concerning.
      Edit reason: I put NATO as Nato.

      Zigi Samblak It is important to me to voice my opinion on this because I like Vice and I don't like seeing their journalists be careless in the field. Even more important is I think by sending this obviously in-experienced journalist is that questions remained unanswered because she pestered NATO officials into completely stone walling her. If Vice had sent someone more professional I think we would have gotten more information on the situation. I am sure they were told not to speak about Russia to any media but It couldn't have helped the situation that she was acting so unprofessionally. The video was left devoid of any actual information and chocked full of useless speculation and that is why I am taking the time out to voice my opinion.

Militaries conduct exercises on their borders, they have for centuries. It makes sense to have experience on the terrain you will actually fight on. More so, you can be sure that regardless of where NATO conducts its exercises the Russian Federation will have no problem conducting its exercises on the borders of neighboring countries and in fact does so regularly and, as mentioned, without telling the media first.

A) the US wouldn't let that happen, not EVER....The Poles are our closes allies, and it would be like Iran invading Jordan. We may not have fought Iran, but just because Jordan hasn't either, doesn't mean we wouldn't come running to help our friends. Have you ever asked any US SOF veterans or NSW Team guys (SEALs etc) about this? They view the Polish as their brothers and as family. If Russia even set foot in the Polish capitol or even fire one shot at a Polish soldier once they attempted to start an invasion, you would see waves upon waves of the top US military forces fly in to stop it without hesitation. WE (the US) have a thing with NEVER forgetting who our REAL friends are. We would fight ot the death (even if it went nuclear etc) to back up the Polish forces.

      LoL, I was thinking the same thing, but these guys are sort of wannabe mil types living close to the borders. I would assume that aspect has more to do with having Gov contact with such groups indirectly via the military in order to prevent Russian like infiltration or stuff like that.
      Its probably more local PR thing than anything else. Just to calm these edgy wannabe mil types a bit and stuff like that. Make em feel like they are doing their part and serving their nation and so on.
      Otherwise these folks will get a rude awakening if they are forced to use their airsoft tactics against people with real weapons. Ranges, cover, tactics, injuries, logistics etc etc... • @Lobos222
      @Lobos222 Před 8 lety

      Simunition isnt used outside.... Its only a valid training tool inside buildings with very short ranges.
      Regardless of "cost" you wouldnt have any serious troops have airsoft guns. How the fuck are people going to learn to operate or more importantly clean and maintain a real weapon if they only have access to airsoft.
      LoL, nah, those airsoft guys are not meant to be actual troops. But living at the border I can understand that people are worried and in that sense it probably has a mental and morale aspect.
      I would even take those guys more seriously if they were mostly kitted out with farmer like clothes, a simplistic ammo belt and a hunting rifle or other common rural house weapon. With exMil older guys focusing allot more on defensive tactics and how to build proper defensive structures so you dont get knocked out by the first 20mm or infantry HEAT rocket that lands close to you. Because then they would be a classical militia using limited means in order to face a higher tech enemy.
      This running towards the enemies like lemmings in order to close into "airsoft range" etc is just BS.

    • @jaeger1447
      @jaeger1447 Před 8 lety

      Lobos222 Could have surprised me, I guess that time my friend and I shot each other at 30m- 50m with Simunitions didn't happen. Anyway, there are different grades of sim rounds; a competing vendor, Force on Force, has more powerful sim rounds that allow for ~100m training.
      My whole point was that yes, these guys are boy scouts, and yes, they are not real military, but that doesn't mean that their little Airsoft scenario couldn't theoretically be a part of a training curriculum. I am sure because we got to see five minutes of an Airsoft scenario in a Vice video, we can decide with complete authority that it is unpossible these guys could learn to clean a Beryl in another context.

    I find it amazing how the lady doing the interview asks every question from the perspective that it is NATO that is provocative, and it is NATO that failed to respond to Russian aggression. Perhaps she needs to have someone teach her the meaning of "hypocrite". Because she is clearly a hyprocrite if she makes the point in her questions that Russia made aggressive moves and NATO didnt react, and then accuses NATO of being the one to be provocative and "fearmongering" when NATO finally does have a preparatory reaction with wargames to get troops ready. Someone send this child home and send a decent reporter.

    Not to mention that the entire video is made in some odd fear/warmongering tone while from the interviews it seems that everyone are by far more calm than this kiddo-reporter is. Even paramilitary groups seem to be more reasonable and calm than the tone of this video is trying to make it through added commentary and clever editing.

    This is not good journalism, she kept implying when talking to the Secretary General that Russia is just gonna start a war. What do you have to say on that? Why don't you instead ask what steps are in place to stop Russia from ever thinking of moving nuclear capable weapons to the western border. Or ask what he thinks of Russia calling NATO a threat to Moscow! It cud have been better

    I find myself torn with all of these situations and actions that we have witnessed in the past several years.
    Anybody with open eyes and clear intellect, can visibly see certain factions building up pressure, either partly or solely creating some of the things we see.
    I see and hear people regularly denouncing these actions being forced into place by certain powerful people. I myself do not like some of the things we see and know for sure are happening.
    one thing I know for sure is, we never see the complete picture. There are many different factors and sectors at play here and they all have a reason behind them.
    Some are defensive measures, some are offensive measures.
    when it comes to geopolitical issues, it's not always as easy as what is right or what is wrong. If it was that easy, mostly all Nations could pack their personnel and go home, forever living in a peaceful environment.
    I truly think this is mostly everybody's goal and is a Noble goal, nevertheless. One thing I always tell myself is, no matter how peaceful and transparent you wish to be, there will always be the other side of the paradime, waiting and willing to take advantage of any opportunity or opening they feel they can capitalize on.
    We don't always know why things are happening nor why certain groups are doing the things they are doing, and the fact of the matter is, it's truly not our concern.
    You can worry about things until the cows come home buthome, the facts will still remain. geopolitical issues most cases are directly intertwined within our economy and our national interest. this is why it is a put above all else
    while in murky situations like we find ourselves in currently, we must more than ever stick to our principles and morals, keeping a clear and genuine heart while at the same time taking everything we interpret with a grain of salt.
    oftentimes horrible people and horrible groups come along committing horrific atrocities to innocent civilians, which creates the reactive measures taken by other sectors of the population.
    If one is not careful, and is lacking a clear set of moral principles, it is easy to become filled with anger and rage, slowly but surely becoming the groups and people you despise and denounce by trying to impose against them at all cost.
    when we think of modern-day nation states we Invision their military might, their flag, their population, their culture, pretty much seeing them as a collective whole, like an organization.
    At the end of the day, it's the people who make up the goverment, police, military and all other governmental agencies. we tend to view those as a collective home because we give those different sectors moral Authority empowering those people's to act in our behalf. never-the-less, at the end of the day, it is still the individual who makes up that Collective wholehole, An if we do not stick to our morals and principles, it is easy to become something we are not.
    no government body can Stop negative changes within our culture. it has to happen within each one of us.
