This version of Roddick, on a fast grass court, would have been a nightmare to tame for anyone. Anyone. The guy was a beast. Monster serve, monster forehand, good speed, killing every single ball without consideration. Looked unplayable during long periods of the match, until Roger started to reverse things his way. Federer escaped from this one, and this victory shows how great he was, and how versatile his grass game was. And also this victory settled in my opinion what would later become a clear dominance over the American. This was a great final.

Also, Nadal and Djokovic wouldn't be the players they are today, barring Nadal on clay, if Federer didn't raise the bar for tennis and Djokovic even said this himself. The fact that folks belittle Federer's victory over Roddick shows they don't know anything about tennis because Roddick on a grass court is insane.

He played at his best when he had the power off the ground to compliment his big serve. Once he changed his FH, guys didn't have to worry about his power from the back of the court, and they'd be able to dictate against him. He played well in the 2009 final and pushed it to fifth, but the match always seemed to be on Fed's racquet because he could dictate a lot of the rallies.

Some people say this was a weak era but this is seriously high quality tennis. Serving, ball bashing, net play. All stellar! I think the biggest thing that Federer lost was shis athletic ability. The defence, the stretches, the reflexes were amazing back then.
Andy roddick should have won this wimbledon 2004 final. He was at his Best years 2003-2004. Its sad that he only won 1 grand slam (US Open 2003). And that wimbledon 2009 final was so close.

Whereas with djokovic, everyone says he was exploiting his backhand, but the reality is Rogers backhand just isn’t as good as his forehand, so when he loses a match he’ll he making more ue from that wing, djokovic beat Federer in other ways
People often forgot Roddick stays in Top Ten for a very long time even though all we remembered is he lost to Federer countless amount of time. Roddick also filtered out a lot of the player before they play against the top players.

Roddick's head to head vs Federer can seem lopsided when you just look at the win-loss record. From a tactical standpoint, he does all the right things in this match, he just misses the big points that matter most. If he would have done a better job of winning the right points against Federer, I think he would win Wimbledon 2004 and 2009 and also a few other non-slam matches and the h2h would be something like 18-6 or 16-8 Federer, which there is no shame in.

Huge match! Real tennis. The good old days when you wanted to hurt your opponent, delivering killer blows. It was fast, sharp enjoyable to watch. I miss these days so much compared to the nowadays tennis so boring and even everywhere, allowing guys without talent to win because all is made to make their kind of play strong.

Nadal was a challenge to Federer on all surfaces for a number of years but didn't beat him off clay since Jan 2014. Nadal hasn't won a match off clay against Djokovic in a couple months off a decade and has lost 19 sets in a row on hardcourt. Djokovic is Nadal's toughest career competitor on clay having beaten him twice as much as the next nearest competitor on the surface. Djokovic dominated fed over 2 to 1 in finals and nearly 2 to 1 in slams. Fed last beat Djokovic in a slam match when he was only 30. And Roddick never had a good backhand and was a poor volleyer on both wings also.
The edge came when Roddick fired Brad Gilbert, and changed his FH from a flat shot to having more topspin. He could no longer hurt Fed from the back of the court, which made the match-up that much easier for Federer. The prime example was the Wimbledon final rematch the next year. Roddick looked like a completely different player, and couldn't hurt Federer at all from the back of the court.

Did you see that serve and forehand flying over thenet from roddick? This was where roddick had breaks in the first and 3rd set before roger brought his A game. Certainly not as easy st it looks.! Aso you can keep cribbing about roddicks backhand but it was decent enough to get him to GS finals and even defeat nadal and 20 yo djokovic
If Roddick's opponent had been Novak, Rafa or Andy, maybe he could have won once. Roger's ability to return to big serves is amazing. He was born in the same era as the worst opponents as far as I can think of.

Roddick screwed up getting rid of Brad Gilbert. He should have kept him and got another coach to help with his backhand. After he got rid of Brad Gilbert he lost that big forehand and started hitting topspin which made him way worse.

I remember watching this live. One of the best matches I have ever seen. Roddick left it all on the court that day against the GOAT.

I disagree..Roddick improved his backhand a lot. As to the big 3, they were always great challengers to each other on all surfaces.
