Most people are familiar with Judo throws from seeing it in Judo competitions. But Judo has ground game, submissions, and even striking. I was told, a long time ago, and I'm in my 50's, that you should learn two things: (1) Judo, so you learn what it feels like to be thrown to the ground, how to fall, how to recover, and how to throw other people around; and, (2) Boxing, so you learn what it feels like to get punched, how to recover, how to tolerate it, that you should get back on your feet, and how to throw your own punches. Master those two and you'll be formidable.
So basically just learn wing chun from Master Wong because it teaches striking with fists and legs (better than boxing) and how to completely disable people that try to grab you and how to throw them to the floor and be able to do what you want with them.
Judo has one big flaw, i just have to take my jacket and top off. I can tell that the Judo guy was extremely good at bjj as well. He instantly defended any submission threat & executed the stm bar submission so perfectly, that most Black belt BJJ guys wouldn't be able to do the same. Perfect technique, setup timing, explosion, execution. If he was ONLY a Judo champion, he would've been submitted after the toss. That's why BJJ is so lethal in combination with wrestling or Judo & nowadays also striking only because top MMA guys are also extremely good at BJJ and wrestling. It's been over 10 yrs since people could dominate while being horrible in one of the main fight skills. Boxers or kickboxers lost the easiest vs BJJ specialists, and wrestlers would also loose, but since MMA always required striking due to starting on their feet, it was a little harder to beat a great wrestler who had great striking, if they can defend takedown and avoid for the fight to go to the ground. But that's two specialists so at first even best wrestlers lost easily without the ability to beat someone with striking, so they would take down everyone and when they faced a BJJ black belt, they got submitted right away. Thats why it's called MMA, even though certain skills are more effective and it also differs on weight classes. Heavy wright's are much harder to take down, so a viscious KO striker, only needs to be great at defending takedown and if he is the best with striking, he can be a champion. Similar to Francis N. In lighter Wright clases, when it's a lot harder to KO someone due to less powerful strikes, then the fightet requires to be a specialist in as many combat ways as possible.
Jujitsu gets many of it's submissions from Judo, that arm bar is the first thing I learned in Judo. MMA has boiled down to the most effective moves, Striking and ground work, it's why Sambo works so well.
TLDR but I feel you bro, the combination of the two is the only correct answer. In the end, the Judo guy was just the better fighter regardless of what discipline he's from
He's may be skilled in BJJ, but I don't know that this is demonstrative of that. A throw into armlock transition is a very common one in Judo, often taught very early on, and he's probably practiced this hundreds or thousands of times in a Judo context. It varies country to country and club to club, but some places have more focus on groundwork in Judo than others. His BJJ experience may have helped him to control the situation better than if he did not have it, but it's certainly not a highlight from this match.
Sorry you don't need BJJ to defend against it any upper level Judoka would do the same thing without BJJ experience. you all forget BJJ came from Judo.
I did Judo when I was younger. A very fun sport on mats when practicing too. I loved the feeling of flying through the air and landing hard and also throwing people too
I mean BJJ guys are pretty athletic themselves, it’s just a lot like to “pull guard” which is where they just sit and try to force the opponent to engage, legit BJJ guys go for the offensive take downs like the attempted double leg at the beginning

Maybe instead judo wrestling would be better.Judo depends on cloathing gripes.
