I’m a firm believer in maintaining my tools. I still have a Kitchenaid stand mixer my parents gave to me the Christmas I was 35 (when they were still made by Hobart in the U.S.). I’m now 67. It has been overhauled twice, works beautifully, and survived 25 years of frequent moves - one overseas - while my husband was in the Army. My father taught me: always buy the very best, maintain it properly, and it will serve you very well. It will be expensive upfront, but will save you money in the long run.

Did you overhaul it yourself or send it to someone?
@@latui7350 I didn’t do it myself, rather had it professionally done. Can’t remember the business names, as they were in different states and many years ago. Last year I saw someone’s video about how she took her mixer apart, then cleaned and oiled it. Not sure I’d suggest doing that unless you’re a really good appliance repair person, but it was interesting.
@@EllysEverydaySoapMaking Dad owned a very small carry-out pizzeria. Everything was made by hand, which naturally included the dough. He had a freestanding, commercial Hobart mixer. It was built like a tank and lasted for ever! One day, Hobart stopped making replacement parts for the very old models. Equipment repair businesses had to scrounge for parts, and buy used mixers to cannibalize. Finally, no one was able to keep that beast running any longer. Dad had to buy a newer one. He bought it used, but said it was never as good as his really old Hobart.
@@sharonandrews4910 I remember seeing someone in Florida a long time ago that would refurbish them. I was scared of the shipping cost at the time because those mixers are really heavy haha

Hi Elly. Thanks for this video. My mum bought me a Bamix stick blender when I had my first child (32 years ago now). The Bamix stick blender didn't come apart in two. However, the blades could be removed and changed depending on the application. When it started making a screeeeeching noise when I was using it, I'd take of the blade so it was just the post spinning and put a few drops of oil while it was inverted. Worked a treat. End up it only worked on one speed and I bought a Thermomix so didn't feel the need to keep it (pre soaping days). So just thought I'd share how I did it with a non-separating type stick blender. Of course you couldn't do it if the blade wasn't removable. Although you could turn it off, put a drip of oil down inverted shaft then turn it on to get the oil to run down.

Great tips! I always soak the last little bits of soap off my blender head because it’s such a pain to clean after soaping! Now I know not to!! It’s only 3 years old, but there’s no reason that it can’t last with proper maintenance! Would love more tips like this - you always manage to think outside the box and share tips that no other soaper thinks of! It’s awesome.
Thanks Kelly. To be honest, I do sometimes soak my blender for brief periods, but I prefer to get some really hot, soapy water and blast it in that as soon as I've finished soap making - that cleans it off quite well. The trick is not to wait until the soap hardens!

Well, you can soak it for a brief period if you need to, but I would rather clean it straight away before the soap hardens and let it dry. The longer it stays soaking the more water will get into the shaft, causing rust.

Hi Elly, in case you read this. Yesterday I made orange zest cold process soap. This morning I noticed it’s leaking oil. What could be the reason? I had 40% lye concentration, 1000g of different oil and a bit of fragrance oil. Plus 5% of super fat.
How do add alot of grit to your soap?

Tool oil only please. Other oils can leave residue that can corrode internal components. WD40 is not for tool maintenance it is for door hinges and bolts. As a gormer factory worker i learned the hard way that there is a difference between the tools maintained by proper tool oil last longer and work better than tools that were haphazardly maintained by WD40 and other substitutions.

Whatever you do, NEVER USE ‘BABY OIL’ ON BABIES! (J’s) As Elly suggests probably it’s best usage is to lubricate your stick blender ; ) ; ) Does 3-in-one still exist? That would be good for your stick blender methinks ; ) ; ). Again, definitely not for babies 😊
