I’d have to hear both before picking a favourite. All accolades due your reviews considered, I’d still have to take a listen to decide the winner.
Between the two I'd have to put my $ on the model 5's mainly based on looks but also sealed over ported. You may loose some bottom end grunt but I have subs for that. Ultimately though I'll stick with my Forte iv's. It feels really good to be secure in all my decisions for my setup. No matter what the next best thing is I'm so happy with my system. I really wish that for everyone! I know I always thank you both for all your help and you're r probably sick of hearing it. Best wishes to you both and happy Holidays!
Those r some truly old school looking speakers 🔊. I like I like 👍🏻
Not sure if you already know this Andrew. But Emotiva has come out with a Basx. MC1 receiver. I’ve been waiting like forever for this. I SO VERY MUCH hope you’ll give it a 👀.

So after a glowing review of the KLH Model 5, we get an end of year review of the Linton’s where they pronounced “ better” than the KLH and awarded the Speaker of the Year? C’mon you guys! This review and the one on the B&W 606-S2’s indicate to me that your ears and opinions are sometimes all over the map. Interesting coming from reviewers whose reference speakers are Klipsch’s. I have heard both and the Linton and KLH and the voicing is just different. If you want a warm, musical sound with deep base and a rolled off tweeter, go for the Lintons. If you want more clarity and detail with a more forward sound and tight controlled bass, go for the KLH. Neither is “better”. Better for who?
A big thank you to Andrew for his reviews of the Wharfedale Linton Heritage speakers (and also the Audiolab 6000a). Both these reviews finally put an end to a somewhat long and frustrating search for an excellent system.
I’ve never written a youtube comment, but have read lots of them. I understand that everybody’s tastes are different, but in an effort to attest to Andrew’s reviews of the Lintons (and the 6000a), and pay it forward to someone who may be struggling to find a great system, here’s a quick summary of what I was looking for, what I auditioned, and why I ended up with the Lintons and the 6000a.
From a system standpoint I was looking for something simple which allowed me to stream music from a music streamer (how I listen 90% of the time at least for now) and allowed for the potential to upgrade my system. Sound wise I was looking for something that had the following characteristics: Detailed, but non-fatiguing sound (slightly warm?); engaging sound that pulls you into the music, but not in a sterile, overly analytical way; three-dimensional sound; wide, deep, spacious and accurate sound stage… Essentially something that, to me at least, provides a truly immersive and enjoyable listening experience.
For reference my listening rooms fluctuate from a ~17’ wide x ~43’ deep room to a 14’ wide x 16’ deep room. I listen to an equal amount of all varieties of music from Jazz/Jazz Fusion, Ambient, Electronic, Bluegrass, Folk, World, and a fair amount of the Grateful Dead as well… even though most their live recordings sound less than ideal.
Yes, the Audiolab & Linton combo provides plenty of volume even in my larger room.
Regarding the Lintons. My first impressions were that perhaps I made a mistake as they had a muffled, boxy sound that lacked detail, particularly on the high end. I read that others said to give them time “break in” and they open up. I can 100% confirm that within a week of playing them that is exactly what happened. The treble somehow became as detailed as I would like it. The soundstage became extremely spacious. They became the speakers that everyone raved about. Did they “break in” or did my ears readjust? It really doesn’t matter to me what happened, they sound great.
Speakers I auditioned:
B&W 606: Too much treble
Q Acoustics 3050i: Not detailed enough, missing something?
Elac Debut 2.0 B6.2 and F6.2: Great sound, but not engaging enough
Kef LSX: Awesome sound, but too small
For the Audiolab 6000a I knew fairly quickly upon plugging it in that this amp was going to probably be the one. That said, I did compare it to the AXR100, CXA 81 and even the Rotel RA-1572 mkII with the Lintons. The Audiolab just had, at least to my ears, something special about it. Each time I switched back to the Audiolab, those sound qualities I felt may be slightly missing from the others, came back. The Audiolab put a smile on my face, which at the end of the day is what it’s all about.
Here's the amps that I auditioned:
CXA 61 & 81: I waited for all the hype to come through on these but it never happened. Just my ears and opinion though
AXR100: Not as detailed and the fan noise was a deal breaker
Yamaha as501: To harsh on the high end despite my efforts to break in the amp, also lacking a little bass or “umph”
Denon PMA 600NE: Lacked the spaciousness, 3d and detailed sound
Bluesound Powernode: Too me it just was missing something or a few things, not engaging enough?
Sonos Amp: Same as the Powernode
Rotel RA-1571mkII: To finalize my Audiolab 6000a decision (paired with the Lintons) I decided to see if doubling my spend on an amp would be justified with an increase in performance. Although it provided more power and other nice features, I preferred the Audiolab sound. In fact, in an A/B comparison, when I switched from the Rotel to the Audiolab my wife (who appreciates music but could care less about “hi-fi”) almost immediately said “That one sounds better, which one is that?”
So I ended with this: WiiM Mini into the optical on the Audiolab 6000a powering the Lintons. Very happy with the results.
Thank you again to Andrew for his reviews and especially for Kristi’s succinct comment about the Audiolab 6000a being “the un-suck it button for speakers”. That comment helped me hit the buy button for the Audiolab.
Hope this helps!
I bought the lintons and audiolab 6000a 6000cdt and 6000n together almost two years ago. Incredible
Thanks for you’re very accurate discription of you’re yourney
@@gerald9442and OP, do you miss not having tone controls on the Audiolab? I was considering something from Marantz for that reason....
@@ephons i don't miss them, but I can imagine that you take that into account.
@@gerald9442 I'm not sure I do... I'll try to ask to do a in-store comparison!
The Lintons are designed to be heard with the grills on to avoid diffractions. Once properly placed they are a joy to listen to. Good review.
I’ve owned the Linton’s in Walnut finish for two years powered first by a vintage Yamaha receiver and now by a $4,000 tube amp and Andrew’s assessment of the speakers is spot on. I’m a happy customer and the stands double as storage for my vinyl records 😍
What tube amp is that?
Did the amps make much of a difference?
🚩 *The Linton's are currently $300 off here **bit.ly/85Linton** if you've been eyeing these!*
I decided to get rid of my Wharfedale Linton 85th anniversary speakers. Bought a pair of KEF LS50 Meta, then a pair of Buchardt S400 MKII.
They are all great sounding speakers with their pros and cons. On their own, they all sound fantastic. Play them side by side and you easily find out what you prefer. Ones not better, just different. After chasing the best sound for me, the Linton's are back in my listening room for good.
Long term listening usually reveals the superior products.
May I ask which amp you’ve paired them with?
The Denton 85’s are my bedroom speakers and it’s their midrange that has me addicted. Wharfs are midrange kings.
I have been building and measuring speakers for the past 5 years. From my in room measurements, Linton out performed many speakers. From 300hz to 10khz, it is almost flat with around +/-2 dB. Not many speakers can pull this off. However below the transition frequency (250hz), the room essentially took over and that could induce some peaks and nulls. This, I think is the main issue with this speaker. The +5db in this region could easily excite the room and to a certain extent muddy the lower mid. This is where you need to play around with positioning, room acoustics or even tame the bass down slightly using a PEQ/ room EQ.
Once you get that sorted, this speaker is going to beat a lot of other more expensive competitions out there.
KLH on the other hand has a significant dip between 1 to 2khz... From psychoacoustics point of view, we are most sensitive to the 1khz to 3khz region, as this is where most audible speech syllables reside. So any imperfections here could easily be picked out. A dip would therefore make the vocal sound thin and unnatural.
The other problem is the lack of bass for the KLH. No problem if you partner KLH with a sub, but if you intended this as a pure 2 channel listening then, I would rather take on the Linton. Taming bass down is easier with room EQ but boosting them up would create more potential distortions. That's my bass management philosophy; hence Linton is a big win for me.
Interesting, have you posted your measurements in a forum or blog anywhere? Stereophile's M5 measurements show about a 3db dip in between 1k and 1.8k but that is similar to their Linton which shows a 2.5db dip between 1.4k and 2.1k.
Kristi and you convinced me to get one of these. Thanks for your subjectivity, candor and grace :)
Finally! Wooohoooo! I feel so much prouder of my pair of Lintons. Thanks guys!
Great review Andrew and Kristi!! Do you think they go ok with the Onkyo RZ50? Or should I buy integrated amp as the Audiolav 6000 or the Marantz model 40? Thanks a lot!!
I'm not going to lie. I'm in love with old school hifi; speakers in particular.
It's just so hard to find good ones.
Thank you, Andrew! I picked up the Linton’s this summer based on you very good review. I love it and paired it to my Yamaha 801. Loving it. I agree, you need the stands, Wharfdale needs to include this in its price. Cheers!
Thanks for the great review, I love the vintage speaker look and for me here in New Zealand the Linton's were a no brainer as KLH's are more than 2X the price at around $3,700 USD equivalent, JBL L100s aren't available, and the Klipsch heritage line starts at the equivalent of $5,700 USD for the Heresy IV. Similar story for a lot of other audio gear reviewed on your channel. So shout out to IAG for ensuring retail prices for its brands are reasonable - even in small countries where next stop on the bus is Antarctica!
I'm just down the road from you (practically) in Lower Hutt, I love my Lintons so much - and I went from KEF LS50W to this. I also auditioned the KLH Model 5's and preferred the Lintons. Just such a shame we can't audition more brands, so very limited in options here in NZ.
Andrew, thanks for the review. I have a pair of Linton's with the stands. They were purchased in April of 2020. I'm a old timer here. These Linton's are paired with my restored Marantz 2270 that I purchased new in the middle seventies, a Technics SL-Q200, Sony Compact disc player CDP-C435 and a BlueSound Node 2i. They have a nice warm sound that both my wife and I enjoy. They do sound much better while using my turntable or CD player over the streamer.
It's about time you reviewed these. =) I bought these over a year ago and have them paired with a Naim Uniti Atom. This setup is not only just flat out convenient to use, but it's a sound that I can listen to all day long without any fatigue or one that becomes flat and boring. IMO, the Naim is a great match that "livens" up the speaker's slightly laid back and warmer side of neutral presentation.
Had a listen today. First thing I noticed was boomy bass with no definition, they were 10cm from a wall, asked dealer to pull them out. Only marginally better. Then Noticed on the magnat amp that someone has cranked the bass past neutral by about a third. Turned it down to below neutral point from there it sounded balanced. They are prodigious bass producers. Bass texture was ok, there was an instant where a bass drum had definition. The speakers had only been playing two weeks though so not broken in. Mid is not too forward but well judged, male and female vocals sound personal and human, quite honest if you like and whole. I didn't find treble grainy. There is detail and sparkle but it's never harsh. Overall it sounds very balanced top to bottom with no sharp edges and it is warm. Guitar strings had excellent timbre. It makes you feel content and like a smile has been transplanted into your core. You want to listen and listen. Off axis still sounds good but of course much more detail in the sweet spot. The soundstage is big but imaging is poor to average. NB this itself is not a bad thing as over imaging carries its own fatiguability IMO. Centre image is good but nice and wide rather than a laser beam. Overall I am sold and will likely get them in a few months. Warm easy musical listening, enough definition but never tricking you to pull the music to bits. I hope bass definition increases I'm sure it will. The speakers do not disappear at all, don't get them if you want that. Sound is presented just in front of the speakers a foot or so.
One channel compared the Lintons with the JBL 4309. JBL produced super-articulated bass; while Lintons were warm, relaxed, pleasurable. But, if you’re a listener looking for that extra bass definition, you’ll have to consider other options.
@@gokhanersan8561 I'll have to listen to a pair broken in as can see that bass driver taking some time to open up. Bass definition was just mediocre and I noticed it quickly.
@@peterwood2633 It’s worth listening-if one can find a showroom nearby.
How are they sounding after 2 months? Also, just for reference how far from the wall do they need to be to avoid the boomy bass? Thanks
@@armandosoto9244 He said that the boominess was ultimately due to the gain on the bass being increased far too much.
I just had a chance to listen to the Linton's and the model 5's side by side at a shop here in Seattle. They were in a decent sized room 20X25' with about a 10' ceiling. I was listening through a Luxman amp which I think put out 100 watts per side. I am not sure if it had to do with the Amp and speaker pairing or not (however I don't think anything would sound too bad through the Luxman), but I thought the Lintons were a bit boomy. I thought I could hear a boxy sound coming out of them too. After the reviews I thought I would love them right off the bat. And they were pulled about 4 feet from the wall. I heard them first and commented on it to the person helping me. He said I would love the 5's and brought them into the listening room. Initially I thought they sounded a bit thin. The the person put the speakers almost up against the wall. Wow is all I can say. The KLH's have a much more realistic bass, and it was much much quicker than the Lintons. I ended up pulling them out from the wall about a foot and a half from the wall and the sound only improved. Unfortunately the price was a bit out of range as the cost for the KLH's has risen to about $2700 once taxes are added on. I honestly wish the Lintons did it for me as I could actually justify the cost. To be honest I am not sure if it was the interplay between the Amp and the speakers, or maybe the large room that gave the 5's the advantage. With a brighter amp in a smaller room the Lintons might have the advantage. I am just glad I got to hear them side by side.
I love hearing both the perspectives of you and your wife. Brings more value to the review. Bravo, team! 💜
Thanks so much!
Andrew’s is the sundae but Kristi is the cherry on top! I’ve become custom to waiting to hear her opinion as I feel it’s more everyday practical listener.
Another top review. Wishing you both a restful and safe festive period. Thank you for your excellent content in 2021. Here's to 2022👍👍👍
Based on the fact that over here in UK for the price of the model 5 you can have Linton with stands and an audiolab 6000a with still enough money left over for some decent cable and a few albums..... Gotta give it to me Linton's.
Hey guys, another great review ! I own the Lintons and also tried the Dentons in my room. For those who are deciding between the two, my finding was that the Denton’s treble was a smidge to hot for my taste and my room. That and the Lintons larger sound made me send the Dentons back. @Andrew: Did you by any chance try them with your Decware amp ? I’d be curious if it could drive the 90db Lintons.
I have the Lintons for like 7 months now, and unlike to what some people might think, they DON'T make poor recordings with harsh mids sound great. For that you need Harbeth speakers with recessed mids. However, the mild tweeter of the Lintons does make remasters with too much added 'brilliance' way more tolerable. So if you listen to Jazz, you will never experience fatigue with ride cymbals or hi-hats. In that regard they are 'forgiving' speakers but they will not mask the harshness in mids often found older on recordings re-released on CD. They excel with classical music and female Jazz vocalists, recordings that sound natural as opposed to compressed and processed. Andrew is right when he says they are very balanced, nothing (not the bass, the mid-range or the tweeter) sticks out or calls attention to itself. It 's like your hearing one full range driver.
Great feedback. I also love listening to acoustic guitar on them. When the war is over -acoustic - Ian Moss and Starlight- Myles Kennedy & Slash sound superb! 😊
Just to veiled up top. Many info from recordings lost. There is a difference between pronounced treble and lack of treble.
Andrew, i love your channel and i hope you guys have a great holiday season !
I wonder if i missed it but did you make the comparison based on the klh model 5 level switch in a particular position ? Ive had some speakers that have these switches and in cases especially with digital need to be set to the lowest position to tame the slight issue you speak of on the model 5
Andrew and Kristi Thank you for the great review. I was going to buy one of the speakers you've recently review and struggling find a showroom to audition both speakers. I've heard the Dynaudio Evoke 20 and thought those were great. Does the Linton's have a similar sound? I love music and listen for hour, and my main concern with my selection is the possibility of listening fatigue. Which would you choose. I Love all genre's of music but tend to listen to Rock and jazz the most. Thanks again.
This review is spot on! I have both the Lintons and Model 5s in my room and until you A & B them you don’t realize what you’re missing. I’m running these with a Audiolab 6000.
Lintons fill the room and have warm soothing vocal, better at low volumes and bass for drums or classical music is more realistic. Placement can be troubling with rear ports and the soft dome tweeter won’t ever wow you. Model 5s are more energetic, nimble, with detailed highs, easier to place and want the volume turned up to shine. The negatives are only in comparison when hearing each speaker back to back. The model 5s sound thin, and vocals come across as lean and held back. (This could be my amp as the model 5s are very transparent) I don’t believe one speakers is better than the other just in comparison to cost the KLH is 35% more. (Still a great value) The KLH fits in my room more seamlessly with looks but the wharfedale are built better. Choose the KLH if you want to hear more from a detailed yet neutral speaker, and you like to listen to them loud once in awhile. Choose the Wharfedales if you like easy listening, no fatigue and enjoy the vocals over the detail.
Excellent share, thank you!
@@jfloop77if they were that bad people wouldn't buy or rave about them. Perhaps you aren't aware of proper system setup.
These look surprisingly good in the black ash finish, a bit more modern and purposeful than the other wood veneer options.
Andrew I can’t tell you how much I needed this review. I bought the Lintons 6 months ago locally, after watching your review of the KLH and how much you guys gushed over them… I needed professional validation from someone who had heard both. I bought them because they were a definite upgrade, width wise fit my space and were cheaper. As an avid Jazz listener, I have to say the warm round sound fits the genre very well. However, having upgraded from Klipsch bookshelves, I was missing some of that upper-end sparkle. So ever since I purchased them I’ve had an internal battle as to if I made the right decision. But tonight when I put a record on, I will smile a little easier knowing they made speaker of the year in your book.
I paired it to the Rouge Audio Sphinx integrated. Ever thought of reviewing it?
Thank you Andrew! I recently bought the Lintons and was very (very very) looking forward to a review from you. This video confirms the whole reason why i bought these speakers. I am looking for an upgrade from my current ~7-8 years old marantz (NR1504) AV receiver to support the newest HDMI technology. Would the NR1711 be a good match with the Lintons sound quality wise?
I remember when I got mine and how impressed I was with the pair of white gloves included in the box. I thought, at any time the butler will come and set them up 😊
Absolutely dead on for the review. After scrutinous searching for the best and more affordable 3 way, I settled with the Lintons last year. And while I still love them (no honey, we're not getting rid of them) they are indeed a full bodied, more relaxing, mature sounding speaker. That's why I picked up the Transpulse1500s this year. While both can rock your face right off, the Lintons are the Cool Guy. The Magnats are his best friend The Party Guy, and I am glad I can hang with both. One's Whiskey, the other's Wine.
Hi Andrew and Kristi. I love the aesthetics of these and your review puts them right where I tend to like my speakers. I know they are in a different class but how do these compare to the Klipsch 8000f? Thank you. Love the channel.
Walnut finish looks fantastic..... A other balanced honest and informative review guys well done from here in uk
Great review Andrew and Kristi - your channel is a Sunday staple! QOTD: I gotta roll with the Model 5 but both are great, you can’t go wrong with either. Thank you again!
Agreed! Thanks for tuning in!
I haven't heard Lintons yet but I have already fallen in love with their look especially black. Wow.
The Lintons also include metal floor pads to protect those beautiful hard wood floors when using the spikes on the bottom of the stands.
Hello from Australia. Love the channel, and love the look of the Lintons.
I need speakers to fill a large room with a high ceiling. I have to pump my evo 150 to get my B & W Cm8s to sing. Would the Lintons do the job?
Andrew, I have had my Lintons in red mahogany, with the stands, for about 6 months and love them. I think you nailed them in the review. I am powering them with the Prima Luna EVO 100 integrated amp which is my first tube amp. With the 91 dB efficiency of the Lintons the 40 watts per channel of the amp is plenty. Love the full, rich sound of this pairing.
BTW, where do you find the digital art that you display on the TV? Always very interesting.
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Kristi & Andrew!!!
I love the foreshadowing you guys do in your videos! Im excited for the Klipsch sub!
We try to keep you interested and looking forward to more.
I picked up the KLH Model 5 with the Audiolab 6000A Play and I couldn’t be happier. Do I wish I bought the Linton? No, while I can imagine and appreciate a better sounding speaker, my wife likes the look of the KLH better and given that they sit in my living room aesthetics is paramount. We live in a wonderful time of reasonably priced audio excellence!
You are so right, I've listened to them both and I went with the Linton's just because the mahogany case is bringing back childhood memories.
Incredible warm spaciality from these two speakers. Should be played with Amber Rubarth to reveal what they can offer.
Hi @averyneh, do you have any critiques/pros/cons of the KLH Model 5? i.e. anything you like or dislike? Thanks
The audiolab is a match with Wharfy as they are from the owner..
Many reviewers (a majority even, I think) favoured the Model fives, so I wouldn't have any regrets
@@CarefreeRambler those mahogany cabinets are gorgeous! My favorite looking cabinet by far! 🇺🇦🇺🇸👊
well this completely solidified my want to upgrade to these from the denton 80th once I get a space that can accommodate their size and I can afford them. I fell in love with the wharfedale sound and knew these would just be a lot of that but even better! also kristie is right a light oak option would look great! I personally prefer the red mahogany. It's gorgeous! Love the review!
I loved your review of the Marantz Model 40. I'll pick up the Marantz soon. The way you spoke of the full yet tight low end really resonated with me. Would you suggest the Wharfdales paired with the Marantz 40? I'm a rock, hard rock, blues and metal kind of guy. I have a smaller room and play/stream higher rez files. I'm open to adding a sub down the line a bit. I would appreciate your opinion or suggestions regarding the speaker or even the Marantz.
Really happy to see this review finally. These are certainly on my short list now. Perhaps pairing with a lean clean and mean amp like the vidar would make a lovely balance with that warm, full character these give.
Andrew, do you think the NAD c700, the Lintons, and the Fluance RT85 are a good match?
The grilles are designed to be left on for tweeter dispersion.
I love my Lintons, they do everything right and they look so good (in mahogany).
Was waiting for this one! Have the Denton 80’s and want the Lintons next. Merry Xmas guys.
Excellent review!
It’s one my top 🔝 twenty loudspeakers and as usual Andrew so cheerfully communicated the truth about this sometimes underrated great loudspeaker system. I love this loudspeaker and it’s on my bucket 🪣 list. 👍💎💡🤩
Okay another Linton lover and that means something!
Erin's Audio Corner also loved Lintons and he has insanely expensive measurement system, but most importantly ears like you. Not many dislike Lintons. I really need to hear them :)
Really great review, thank you. I had no idea they were so capable!
Nice! Im hoping to get these ones next year.
I looked at the wharfedale lintons as i'd heard great things but size and limitations in placement put me off. Glad you guys had such a good experience. If I ever have the room I'll keep them in mind
Hello Andrew, excellent review once again. Not sure I’m being pedantic in asking, but how do these compare with the Denton 85’s? Are the D85’s just smaller versions or are there sonic differences besides bass? Thank you
Owned walnut Lintons for a year and your review nailed it. I have popular Elacs and Klipsch and they each have their strengths, but for grabbing a book and listening to some jazz, these are it. They adapt well to a variety of genres and have a solid, classy build. That build looks great with my silver-faced Yamaha amp between them. They are my Easy Like Sunday Morning speaker of choice. Excellent review!
Another dope review.
Hi Andrew,
What was your treble setting position of the KLH, hi mid or low, that you find the treble is a little aggressive?
I connected the speakers to a Leak Stereo 230 and it sounds absolutely great. Placement of the speakers does matter and once you find the sweet spot, it sounds fantastic. Without a doubt a golden combination, both in walnut finish.
Andrew, this & other reviews went a long way into helping me make the decision to go with these fantastic speakers! I matched with them with the NAD C 3050 with Bluesound OS Card & they sound incredible. Honestly it sounds like the singer is in the room, when the Blues singers taps his foot, you can hear what the sole of his shoe is made of! Warm, velvety, bass, an absolute pleasure to listen to! I've never spent this much on HIFI before, but it feels like I've made a life long investment, thanks for your insight & guidance!
Easy answer to the question is Linton. As I grow older it seems any harshness introduces listening fatigue into the equation. If the Linton has less it's the clear winner.
agreed!!!!!
I love how Kristi tells it like it is
I bought my Lintons last month and I love EVERYTHING about them.
Yay!
I know all rooms are different so just for reference, at what distance from the wall you set them up to like them this much?
I have the Linton's in Red Mahogany ......they do all music justice!! An addictive vibe to them!!!
My God I love these speakers, bought these because of this channel which is excellent by the way, bravo to you guys:) paired them with the leak 130’s. Next will be the Polk R 700’s, as Revel fan I have the m16’s and the F35’s and for the most part adore neutral speakers!! Keep up the good work guys and I love how unbiased you are and the fact that you don’t sugar coat anything. Cheers!!
How do you like the Leak 130? I have the Quad Vena 2, which has similar internals as the Leak 130. However, I've paired mine with the Wharfedale Denton 85s.
What do u like best?
@johnnyboo9041 which did ya keep the Lintons or R700?
Are these speakers good for a 5.1 home theater system paired with a Warfedale eco 4.cs center channel? Or are these speakers best used for music listening? Should I look at klipsch for speakers made for a 5.1 system?
Beautiful speaker, beautiful review.
I have the Linton's and using them with Bryston 28B Cubed amps, and let me tell you, it's fantastic!!!
In my case, I went for the KLH Model 5 for a cpl of reasons, I LOVE acoustic suspension speakers, I've always felt that the bass was tighter, and that bass reflex speakers "cheat" by being ported, another reason the 5's won out, space, I can't be 18" off the wall, and the height ends up being an issue by about 2"...
Very helpful review - many thanks! … 👍 I’ve been thinking about using a Quad tube amp to drive these …
Hi Andrew & Kristi, would love to know if you tried the Lintons with the Naim Uniti Atom and your thoughts?
Stoked for this one!
Enjoy! Hope it was worth the wait.
@@robinsonbrand 100% worth the wait. Excellent review! I picked some up a few months ago. Happy to see they shined in your testing as well 👍
Will a Denon 3800 able to power these speakers with a 2.1 setup? Will I need a sub?
Sorry i missed this on sunday!! Too busy testing my new vintage receiver acquisition!! Happy to catch up now!!!
Gorgeous speakers. My wote goes to the lintons definetly. Thank you Andrew and Kristi
Thanks for your thoughts on this one! I was struggling with the decission, but after having watched your review I ordered Lintons instead of the Fives. You helped me saved a few bucks, or Polish zlotys to be exact ;) Can’t wait to have them delivered tomorrow! I’m pairing them with Cambridge Audio AXR100D and Rega Planar One.
And what are your impressions, if you don't mind asking ?
@@wladers39, my first impressions is that they're beautiful and perfectly crafted. Unboxing was a pleasure in itself. As for the sound, I found out that I need some serious room treatment to make anything sound good in my bedroom where they reside. So now I'm trying to figure out the ways to convince my partner that sound absorbers and diffusers are what we need ;-)
@@NormcoreGreg Good luck convincing your partner, then. And thanks for your reply
Do a review of the new Whardedale Dovedales!
great video. Thanks very much. Do you think these are good for my old Yamaha CR400 with the following values? Continuous power (at distortion factor):
8 ohms: 2x 20 watts
4 ohms: 2x 24 watts
Dynamic performance:
8 ohms: 2x 56 watts
4 ohms: 2x 76 watts
Thank you for the long waiting review😂 Exactly what I feel with mine.
Just curious, why don't you pair the Linton with Yamaha as1200, always see the Amp around your reviews, I saw quite some people pairing these two with happy result in forums, any particular reason you skip this pairing?
I'm thinking about upgrade my Amp from 50w Aura Vita, very good sounding though, lack that final bit of refinement and control, may go to something up to $3000+? What would your recommendation to get the full potential of this. lovely Linton?
Thank you so much.
A man of your word, indeed. Ty Andrew, nice review.
Thanks for watching!
you picked up on what I love with the Lintons that I have already pruchased, they work really well with my valve amp
Is that another word for tube amp? If so, which one do you have?
@@Ustaleone I got my foot wet with a Yaqin MC100B tube amp, its really good for the money
Finally.... The review was everything I expected it to be and more! I was soo scared that Kristy would not like them since these speakers were often described as being mellow and I know that Kristy likes to have a more livelier sound. So happy to hear that you've both enjoyed them. I had already decided that I would get them but it's always nice to hear a fresh review praising them even more. Thanks guys!
Thank you so much, Cerasus Retro! We appreciate you watching.
I got the Linton with the LEAK Stereo 130 and CDT. I love them as a music lover. They give me everything I want and need. I did move them around 2ft away from the wall, toe them and they make listening to music enjoyable for hours and hours. Adding a sub today for some subtle additional kick as at low volume levels (when the babies are in bed) I need a little bit more body in the kick drums or bass guitar. Glad I took a gamble on these when they first came out. Rock, singer songwriter, classic rock, jazz, electronic, it all sounds great. Lower quality recording sound good and they are forgiving, better quality recordings shine with tons of space between instruments and realistic live sounding vocals, guitars and drums……oh my lord, anything with drum fills and toms sounds out of this world.
I've listened to the model 5 in a few different rooms while shopping. They always sound thin if you ask me. They fall totally flat listening to an album like Undertow by tool.
It occurred to me last night that the Wharedale that has the more similar presentation to the KLH model 5 is the larger Evo. 4.4 or 4.3. As a freestanding speaker, the cost is not hidden as it is when considering the Lintons.
I found an AB test of the Evo 4.4 vs the Linton 85 Anniversary last night and was quite surprised how much better the EVO 4.4 is verses the Linton. As I try to sort through how fair it is to compare 2021 products vs available products. I did no have to go far to find that the EVO 4.4 is also priced more or less the same as the KLH model 5, whereas the Lintons can be found discounted.
I too want to save where it is possible. If I want the absolute sound, however, I think the EVO 4.4 or perhaps the 4.3, may be is the better product to consider. The Evo 4.4 vs the Linton appears to be able to allow the ear to follow not just the melody line but the inner voices of chords within music easier. The drivers used on the EVO, provide a different sonic signature.
Those old glam rock recordings that cause so many ear aches are full of high frequency hiss and rim shots that kept the drums slamming. Wouldn't a different dac filter for this kind of old and poorly recorded material be the better way to stop the Ear Bleeding, and at a lower cost?
Spot on Andrew and Kristi, I’m with you two and love the quality of construction of the Wharfedale Linton heritage. I also love the wholly capable sound they give, and like you mentioned for the money, I felt that they’d given speakers twice the price some competition. I love my Walnut finish ones, pretty similar to the colour of Oak I’d say.
Have you tried driving these with your Decware amp? Are the Lintons sensitive enough to be driven by fleawatters? Thanks for your excellent reviews!
For the money, it is a really impressive speaker!
Have them. Love them.
That's awesome!
That all black finish transforms their looks so much, really nice combo with the stands 👍
They are very tailored looking in all black!
Love your reviews. I keep coming back to this speaker for some reason.. And I'm not a "vintage" guy typically. For a fun system I'm putting together in a largish open space living room / kitchen, I'm considering a very simple streaming (powerNODE or C 700) system, so given what I'm hearing of their highs, it makes me think speaker mating will be a bit more of a challenge. The EVO4.x Wharfedales with the AMT tweeter might be a risk with those particular integrateds? I'll be streaming mostly redbook resolution from Airplay or USB drive. These Linton's really just keep calling me though. Sure wish I could demo.. 1 minute in front of them would make the decision for me. My only other recent reference are Dyn Special 40's. hehe Happy new year!
here in the Philippines the Lintons they cost approx $1,250 including stands!
Hi, thanks for the review, your opinion how would these sound with Rotel A11 Tribute? Especially compared to Audiolab 6000a play?
Yes, would be great to know.
I have the tribute also...and seriously thinking about the Lintons.
Thank you for the Two Lanes recommendation. You're right.
I've always looked at the Linton's with a jealous eye. I love the idea of larger drivers and an old school look.
LINTON or MAGNAT TRANSPULS 1500 for only music set in mind? Very similar pricepoint, my dealer sells Linton's with their stands at 1200€, and magnat at 1000€ a pair. Which one would be a better pick? My amplifier is Arcam FMJ A32 and I have REL Strata 5 as a sub. Yes, I'll get both tested but I'd like an opinion as you have tested both.
Oops, I didn't watch the whole video before asking :D
NO WAY, I'm listening to this through a Marantz 2216! Awesome coincidence
Will these speakers perform well sitting on a bookshelf (they would be placed 12-14 inches away from the back of the shelf).? Or would the sound and performance be better using the speaker stands? Thank you.
Hey Andrew & Kristi,
love your work; I wish you would test the Klipsch Cornwall IV too, since it's the only model of the Heritage-line you didn't listen to. It would be very interesting to know, how it sounds compared with all the other retro-speakers.
I just bought the Lintons with Audiolab 6000A Play, mostly because of your recommendations on the awards video. And I mean "Mostly", because I went and listen them along with KEF´s Meta, Klipsch RP600, EVO 4.2, and honestly I enjoyed the Lintons more, they were just more fun to listen. And I kinda liked the retro look more than the others. They look more refine in person, than on video or photos.
Did I mention these are my first "HiFi" equipment I ever bought?
Going down that path as well. Does the audiolab 6000a has enough power and "oompff" for your Lintons? I have a large living room. Congrats on your aquisition!
@@CaptainLouis congrats as well, I’m sure you will enjoy them if you are not looking for a clinical flat sound. The audiolab is more than enough (actually the Lintons are sensitive enough, but many reviews of the 6000A already explain how it can manage most of the speakers out there). Not sure what is big living room, but as reference, mine is about 4.5m x 7m, and I usually listen at -28 (more than that I feel it might irritate the neighbors 😅). And they are very clear and tight bass in things like “Bad Guy” from Billie Eilish (also depends how far they are from the wall you can tune them up). Hope that helps
@@Cencolor Wow! Thanks for the details. I appreciate it. Your room seems the same size as mine. Thank you again!
