    The thing is, rap has always been a genre that’s relied on reinventing itself over and over to stay relevant in the wider musical world. For whatever reason there hasn’t been a serious movement since the 2016/17 soundcloud days (and those seeds had already been sown by Lil B, Soulja Boy, chief keef etc. in 2010-2013). I don’t think any one artist is going to be able to revolutionise things anytime soon. Carti has his goth look but that’s more just a reflection of pop culture currently, which is moving to that 2000’s type alternative/emo style (and carti is a product of the soundcloud era anyway). It also has to be remembered that rap dominated the late 00s and the entirety of the 2010s, unfortunately that means it’s logical that it may just be heading for a period of unavoidable decline in popularity and quality for a bit. Its happened to every genre, just not rap/trap until now because it’s was always the ‘new’ thing. Punk rock was huge in the 90s and 2000s but was absolutely dead in the mainstream for the last 10 years, now it’s well and truly coming back, that’s probably what will happen with rap eventually.

      these timelines are crazy lol rap wasn't the most pop genre till 2010s when Wayne passed the torch to Drake. 00s was the setup with Wayne, Kanye, Jeezy, & Gucci. Hip-hop reinvented itself like rock did prior for many decades. Bands like Blink 182 & Green Day were more or less some of the popular acts in the late 90s but that was after Nirvana & the rest of grunge had its way in the early to mid 90s. Hip-hop won't always be the most popular genre, and personally, I'm ready for us to move past this stagnant ass time where we're in limbo for it. Music works in cycles, but that's in generality, something new tends to surface even with sound that start trending again. I'm ready for the change.

    • @ExactusAtelier
      @ExactusAtelier Před 6 měsíci +5

      Not only this bro, but all of the biggest innovators within the past decade unfortunately passed... it's so sad to see the likes of Pop Smoke, Juice, X, Peep, Von, PnB Rock, Nipsey, etc gone so soon. They were some of the ones carrying on the torch during that transitionary period right around 2016-2020. Now what's left are all these mainstream rappers who don't bring anything new or innovative. The underground however is still thriving but don't get enough recognition to push innovation.

    • @BlackTarzanDME
      @BlackTarzanDME Před 5 měsíci +2

      The best thing for rap, quality wise, is to be forced out of the top spot in the mainstream. That pop spot requires more conformity. But as it goes back to the streets/underground, the genre can get new life -- a breath of fresh air and creativity.
      This is what happens with house and electronic dance music every 10-20 years. It's heavy in the underground, rises to the mainstream for 5 years or so, becomes extremely formulaic and boring, then gets pressed back underground where it evolves or even regresses back to a prior state before pop influences. Same could be happening to rap.

    i got into the detroit/flint rap scene around 2019 through tee grizzley, teejayx6 and sadababy and from there i found a shit ton of new artists like veeze(pre ganger) babyface ray, icewear vezzo(criminally underrated), nuk(very underrated rapper), drego & beno, payroll giovani(criminally underrated), peezy, rio, los, RMC mike, bandgang/shredgang, shittyboyz etc. in fact i learnt about the culture and i’ll tell u it’s very different from the rest of the states. nowadays it’s slowly becoming mainstream with artists like veeze, babyface ray and tee grizzly becoming more known to the larger hip hop audience. personally the michigan rap scene is the the most sonically unique rap scene since the change from the swag era to atlanta’s run in the mid 2010’s imo

    Just because you don’t care about lyricism doesn’t mean other people don’t. It’s still extremely important to the genre. I’m not saying every artist needs to be lyrical (for example, Travis is a horrible writer but still a great artist) but telling McKinley Dixon to dumb down his writing? That’s crazy. It was extremely refreshing to get a new artist with a beautiful soundscape AND INCREDIBLE, UNIQUE WRITING. Kitchen lights also would not have been nearly as good without the impactful storytelling from Gunn. Wordplay also plays a huge role in making hard hitting punchlines and keeping you engaged with the artists performance. I hate hearing the same incredibly monotonous bars from every single rapper. Good writing makes the MUSIC better.

      @@OVO-AdolfYou don’t like westside Gunn because of his voice, not because of his writing, so it doesn’t matter for you, but, for someone who does like Westside Gunn, his great writing plays a big role in that. Also, Griselda has some of the most diverse, unique and incredible production of any rap music ever. Every single yeat beat is the same and could literally be a CZcams type beat, so I don’t know why you’re making that comparison considering EVERY aspect of Griselda music is better than Yeats.

      I agree in McKinley Dixon which is by far the best artist mentioned in this list. That said it's baffling no one mentioning artists such as A-F-R-O, Kemba, Hex One, Deca, Homeboy Sandman or Aesop Rock (still killing 99% of the rap game). No female mc's such as Little Simz, Ché Noir, Vel The Wonder or Sampa The Great.

    imo none of these rappers are gonna save hiphop. yeat, jpeg, and travis scott are trap artists. its a great year for trap, not exactly hiphop though. What comes to mind is this new 21 savage album that has the ability to bring more soul into the game like the alchemist did, but over the years it's been more of a niche genre. late registration and college dropout could've solidified it, but it's really been a passing thing. it looks like rap will stay as an oversaturated drake dick sucking contest right now.
    My opinion is that rap will continue to have artists boom from tiktok, then die out like always. Trap artists like ken carson and carti will inspire people to create music like them, which will saturate the genre, and the greats (kanye, 21, cole, drake) will stay in their place, until they stop making music, then other artists will take the throne and the spot to fill for an empire.

    This what what happens when we dont empower underground hiphop. Even the mainsteam fans get bored and end up (eventually) agreeing with me. Mainsteam rap is just straight up underpopulated. Drake + 3-4 artists at a time cannot hold an ENTIRE culture together by themselves. Mainstream rap is like 2% of all rap. Or even less.

      This is the reason why the SoundCloud era was so great because new artists would reveal themselves what seemed like almost daily and garner attention. The underground started to merge with the mainstream. But, because of this, labels started to lose their control on the game so they had to do something about it, now down the line this is the product of that control.

    One of the biggest and, quote by himself "the biggest known-unknown" which is true. BONES, should def be on the list imo.
    Other rappers i wished got more attention (name drops coming) would be:
    Jake Hill, Kill Dyll, HAARPER, SXMPRA, Saliva Grey, Pouya, Terror Reid... and many more.
