Becoming a one hit wonder must suck for those artists wanting music to be a life long career but I think most people would like to be one hit wonders instead of no hit wonders. Depending on how well that one song pops off it could literally set your entire life up financially. If you play your cards smart that is.
It’s weird being a one hit wonder, you either chase the hit you had or stay in your lane. Plenty of “one hit wonders” keep making the music they want and live off the royalties of that one one hit or they chase the game to get another hit. A lot of indie artists get hits and that fuels their careers for a long time, some other artists (usually in rap, pop, and R&B) try to trend hop to stay relevant. It’s always interesting to see someone like Gotye, Portugal the Man, and Foster the People be considered “one hit wonders” when they’re highly celebrated in indie music but can live comfortably off of all the royalties from one single song.

They only get to play the cards allowed to be played doesn't matter what strategy you go in with they hold every and all cards and play fair & unfair at will. But usually of the artist is willing to be used then success will come. Artists who think they are not going to participate become one hit wonders that they don't profit from. Funny how one hit wonders always seem to solely benefit the label...

I'm glad you included Ylvis (The Fox) and told the real story behind that song. So many people still believe that 1) they were trying to become singers and 2) after The Fox, they became completely irrelevant. When that's not true at all. It's the same with PSY and Gangnam Style. Both songs were meant to be "inside jokes" in their respective countries/fanbases, but it blew up worldwide thanks to the internet. PSY also still has a great career in Korea.
I love both songs. PSY has a lot of bangers if anyone actually looks, and The Fox will forever remind me of my grandpa. He had really bad Alzheimers and one of the last things he did before he declined quickly and died was my cousin was playing The Fox and my grandpa was dancing to it

I don't really know anything about PSY, but he seems like a g in all the interviews I saw with him, so I'm happy he's doing well
PSY isnt even a one-hit wonder, he's basically Korean Michael Jackson. He has his own label, which had big artists like HyunA (though HyunA is not as famous anymore now)
He just stopped being the only face of Korean music. And his impact on introducing Korean-language songs to the world led to the rise of k-pop groups like TWICE, NewJeans, BTS, LE SSERAFIM, BLACKPINK, EXO, and so, SO, many more. I like to say most people's first kpop song was Gangnam Style honestly.
And also he still making hits, just not world-enders like Gangnam Style was when it dropped and exploded
The Silento story always hits me the hardest. When I was still in high school, I had wondered what happened to him and saw an interview where he's talking about how he missed out on his youth -- i think a clip of it plays in this video -- he said that he was always a popular guy in high school, and he blew up at the mere age of 17. He missed homecoming, prom, everything because he was touring the world. He looks so sad in the interview. Compared to Silento's appearance on The Rap Game while he was still attending Redan High School (a small school in Atlanta of only 900 kids, easy for him to become popular), he tries to play off being a rapper while in high school as easy AF.
In the aforementioned interview, the interviewer asks if he still goes to prom, and Silento shrugs and says that sometimes he'll take out a few girls and pull up to a high school prom. Mind you, he was like 20 in that interview. Obviously there's a negative social stigma of doing high school things once you've graduated, but this was on a whole new level of depressing. It seems so APPARENT that Silento was trying to capture his golden years that slipped right out of his hands
Well he’s forgotten now. Nobody cares about him anymore. I even forgot about the song. That was nearly 10 years ago, during my last year of middle school. We were kids then. I’m in my 20s now. Crazy!

Ylvis was basically the Swedish version of the Lonely Island (Andy Samberg). The Lonely Island put out song parodies on SNL in the 2000's (Lazy Sunday, D%$# in a Box, I Just Had Sex, I'm On a Boat) and even had a Spinal Tap-type parody movie. So What Does the Fox Say was a joke song that blew up.

I was Trinidad James' DJ in 2013. I did his first radio interview & first 2 shows in Florida before he got signed to Def Jam. Very cool dude. Humble. Always did good business. The NY radio situation was definitely a detriment to his career. It was one of the reasons he moved to LA. He told the truth about Atlanta artists "running NY radio" it was the so-called RIGHT MESSAGE but from the WRONG MESSENGER. NY radio/labels got in their feelings. "Females Welcomed" was a HIT. Def Jam purposely fumbled it and didn't promote it claiming they didn't know how to which was bs. Nothing but respect for him 🫡

I wouldn’t go as far to say, What does the fox say is a generational hit. And one that everybody loved. When it came out the only reason I heard it was my niece and nephew playing it on repeat as toddlers. And I couldn’t stand that song and most people I know hated it.

There’s this one underground rapper I found last week who might be one of the most versatile I’ve ever heard. He does shit similar to sb and dvrkie. And he still has like no plays, it’s sick as fuck, and he’s actually good and doesn’t just talk about the same shit as every other new rapper these days, this guy is actually straight fire.
From what I understand/remember Trinidad James started rapping for the hell of it. He was more of a fashion guy; even worked a boutique. Don’t Be $afe was a mixtape that was repackaged as an album. Still one of my favorites from that era. No, he’s not a huge rapper these days but being a 1HW isn’t necessarily a bad thing. He’s eating of that song and Uptown Funk. He branched off into different ventures and making money while doing what he loves. That’s a win! Living a lifestyle and getting paid, but not getting hounded by paparazzi.
